| MOORE FAMILY OF SOUTH CAROLINA | ||||||||||||||
| My name is William Parker and I live in Manning, South Carolina. I have been researching the history of the Moore family of South Carolina since 1986. Little did I know that when I started this research I would still be doing it 15 years later. The Moore family of South Carolina geneaology dates back to before the year 1790. The family is scattered throughout the state but I have found the majority of Moore's living in Lake City, South Carolina. These Moore family members are descended from Abraham Moore and Mary "Polly" Evans. I am a Moore on my mother's father's side. His name was Benjamin Alfred Moore. My mother is Ada Mae Moore Parker Green. The most famous member of the family that I have discovered so far is Darla Moore. She is married to Richard Rainwater and is CEO of Rainwater, Inc. Darla also has the distinct pleasure of having the University of South Carolina rename its business school after her. The Darla Moore School Of Business is located at the main USC campus in Columbia, South Carolina. Darla and I are fourth cousins, having descended from Abraham Moore by way of two of his sons, Robert Moore and Benjamin Moore. This web site will be dedicated to the geneaological history of the Moore family beginning with Abraham Moore and his wife Mary and will work up to the year 2001. This is an ongoing project and I will work on it as time permits. I encourage anyone who reads these pages and may be able to help me track the family back past 1790 to feel free to contact me via email. It is believed that the family originally came from Ireland and I am trying to make a connection to that country. | ||||||||||||||
| Beginning The Research | ||||||||||||||
| The reason I started my research into the family tree is simple. Growing up in a small southern town and hearing from my mother and grandmother the story of the "Great Plantation" that the Moore family owned during the 1800's and how my line of the family was supposedly tricked into selling their share of the property naturally made me curious as to the truth behind the legends. Once I was old enough to go out and start doing the research did the truth start to come out. I began by gathering what information I could from my mother and her recollections of what her mother had told her. This information led me back to the names of my great grandfather, Elias T. Moore and his wife Johnnie Mae Cubbage. I knew that Elias' father was named Benjamin Moore and that Elias' mother was named Hannah Sophronia Gray Moore Jeffords, so I started my research at the Sumter County Geneaological Museum where I had access to the South Carolina census records on microfilm for almost every county from the years 1790 to 1910. Starting with the 1900 census for Williamsburg County I began the research that led me to the discovery of my great grandfather's name Elias T. Moore. He was listed as a boarder with a man named Joseph B. Jeffords and Sophronia Jeffords. | ||||||||||||||
