FIRST PART
CHAPTER ONE: THE SECRET
A woman is found dead at Sunday midnight on a stake with her hand tied on the big tree. She was stubbed on her left and right ribs. Her head was decorated with her blood and an under wear on top of her head written: love.
Semi naked, stripped Nashi shock in a small Zambia city called Tshale with about 100 000 people never experienced murder for many years. The free murder city were on shock in thirty minutes hundred of neighbor gathered at the one room house.
Built with modern red brick not painted. The mayor of the city Masamba Puma arrived at the crime scene. People were wondering who is the artist killer of Nashi trying to decorate her like the Biblical Jesus cross story.
Kotsho, Nashi's neighbor had two vigorous dogs and about all his 2 ships, 3 goats and 4 cows and 2 dogs that disappeared from the small house he kept the animals except the chicken that were still there. 43 animals in the surrounding area also run away, half of them dogs. The only animal who remained where the chicken and hens. The animals forced and broke their farm door entrance with a strong power. The only time they tried to work during the day it when they had to meet some foreigners diplomatic and for some few conferences and meeting where they used to interact with ordinaries people.
In this semi rural town animals were very important to the citizen. Most of the people rise the animals and sell them to burst their income. Even people who had good jobs too, sometime were having animals aside to sell or for their own food.
At one o'clock in the morning the mayor of the city Masamba resign from the respected post in that city. The president of the republic before the first democratic election in Zambia, Kaunda named at around 2 o'clock in the morning a former opposition student and a philosopher Prof Kubeka as the interim mayor.
Kubeka was sleeping when he heard a knock at the door. It was 2 hours in the morning. Prof Kubeka an author to be was awaked by his wife while his 2 children started crying. Prof Kubeka who always sleep late in the night, writing his idea and founding has just slept for an hour.
Her wife was wake up: "Prof someone is knocking at the door."
Prof was wondering who can knock at his door at the late night. Prof after many tortured swore never to be a politician in Africa. They make him accept the crime he never committed. They tortured him in a group of want to be politician. Four died and one was in exile and him accept to give up politic even thought he could see people suffering, abused and killed in Africa.
He was accused of plotting to kill the president that he never even met without any gun. The general Madeke of the army gave order to torture them so he can get the promotion to become a general. He claimed to have captured a coup etat plotter.
In this period characterized by many political coup. The head of state and politician used to work at night and sleep in the day to avoid to be over throne.
But the president of Zambia Kaunda wasn't impressed instead of promoting him, degraded him. Then arrested for many years. He wasn't a dictator like many African president. He was a man of emotion. He took the throne in a time where the two block Russia and USA. The west and the East. The capitalist and the communist where they support the head of states for their own benefit but not for the population's benefit.
But Kaunda as the head of state in a dictatorial continent was one of the few exceptions. Him and Leopold Cedar Senghor of Senegal were one of the African fine leader. He cared about people, unfortunately what all his dignitaries does that he wasn't aware of it where blamed on him. The man was still respected as the father of the nation, the first African president after the independence of Zambia.
Prof Kubeka hated Kaunda and his government because of his dignitaries abuse. He swore when he was a young energetic student in Lusaka that he didn't hate Kaunda but hated his actions. But inside of him he hated the head of state and the soldier under Madeke instruction was torturing them iron they body. Electrocuting them with ordinaries wire on the connected illegally. Beating them endlessly in a 4 rooms square where they were held naked sleeping in a floor without food for tree days. They breakfast, dinner and lunch, supper were different kind of torture.
They were forced to urinate and shit in that small captivity room without any window. They were not able to know where they were situated because they eyes where bind with clothes when entering the military truck.
Prof Kubeka was encouraging his compatriot not to worry, his was sure that they effort will pay even in future. He told his friends that they were a sacrificed generation for the better future generations.
Kubeka the survivor of those torture practices end up being a simple teacher in a high school and the most hated man by the die hard church follower who surnamed him Thomas. Thomas wanted to see than hearing what people says. In John 20:25. He refused to accept what his colleagues disciple said that they saw Jesus. He wanted to see him touch him too. He believed only in the scientific proof rejecting the religions theory and the African religion too. He wanted scientific proof.
Kaunda never knew Kubeka the teacher based in Tshale where the mayor has just resigned after the killing drama. It was in 1992, Bill Clinton has just won the election against George Bush senior. The democrat won the election against the republican. They have been fear in many USA sponsored government. many dictators thought that the change in the most powerful nations in the world will see them sweep too from their thrones.
Many dictators and leader wanted to change their policies to please the new government in USA fearing that they will be asked to resign. The change in the USA were affecting all the country in the world.
In Zambia Kaunda accepted to make the first democrat election. His main rival was the former trade union syndicate Tshiluba. Tshiluba was opposing the government long time ago and knew few unknown and tortured opposition member and knew Kubeka.
The Zambia transition was one of the best one in the world because the two parties: opposition and ruling party were negotiating to pave way to a new leadership in Zambia. At that late night Kaunda had contacted Tshiluba for advise before the sun rise and he proposed to name the teacher Prof surnamed Thomas too as the temporary Mayor after the resignation of Masamba.
A true example of an African democracy a country that never experienced any internal war or even a war with any of his neighbour. Some people even surnamed the Zambia's soldier as the ship soldier who have guns but never used them for it purpose to kill an enemy.
Kubeka refused to open the door at the late night. He haven't heard someone knocking at his door at this time.
Then he heard someone saying at the door: "We have great news for you Prof."
Kubeka thought of a trap, may be they wanted him to open the door and arrest him or kill him. But he was wondering why they have to look for him at late night? because he has abandoned the politic. When they were arrested as student it was at late night like this.
He wasn't prepared to take any risk anymore to jeopardize the future of his children. His wife wasn't educated to get a job and support the children. He wasn't wealthy too to save money for his children's education.
The few money he get as a teacher in the government school help him to pay rent, to be clean in buying some clothes, to eat and as all the African to help few nephews, aunt, uncles...
It was at this time they used to catch the opposition leaders. It is at this time were they assassinate people. He recalled for few minutes in his mind what he have said while talking with his friend and could have led in trouble.
He approached the metallic entrance door that had glass window. He was scared they may shoot him by that window. But he wanted to make sure that he die in his two rooms house instead of dying kidnapped and thrown in the near by bush and to be eat like a food by the wild animals.
He noticed that they didnt shoot him. He refused to light the light in his house by fear that the may easily see him inside his house while it was dark outside. Then he saw a light of the powerful torch straight in his house and someone saying. "We have the message of the president Kaunda."
The face of Kubeka was full of fear. The number one man in the land knows him. As a young activist, Kaunda never even knew his name.
He tried to hide his face from the light of the torch. The group of soldier outside his house could see what was happening. They saw how Prof struggle with the light of the torch then they switch off the torch.
The presidency election had to take place in two months in Zambia and he knew that Kaunda will loose and his comrade Tshiluba will win. He knew that Kaunda had many supporters but after ruling the country for twenty years people were just tired and wanted a new face. And that knew face was Tshiluba.
It is why he supported a 2 terms mandates because it doesn't matter how good you may be but there is a time when people will be fed up of you. They are millions of other's people who can deliver too. But in most of the African country president wanted to die president not to die ex president. They wanted to impose knew kingdom where they sons and relative will take over and protect they abuses so they make sure that they pave a way of a continuality after they death.
He wondered what message a dying man. Then he decided to open the door.
He was expecting to be welcomed by kick and beating like they did when he was a student opening his university home's door. He heard all kind of kick before even he spoke. Then was bleeding asking for help but no one heard him. He was leaving in the third floor his other's colleagues where on the ground flood, second and first floor. General Madeke was present giving orders to his soldier: "Hit hard that dog so the dog's owner will come out."
He was convinced that the student who early organized a march where sponsored by powerfull nation to cause a revolution that will change the regime. He charged hard and exaggerate the crime so the head of state will give a promotion become the number one man in charge. Madeke who charged the oppositions of trying to overthrow the government decided to plot when he was degraded instead of being promoted. He was caught while planning how to kill the president in the independence meeting and become the new head of state.
He had people soldier congratulating him: "Congratulation, you have been named as the new mayor of Tshale."
Prof was not ready to accept a political post so he may keep his mouth shout while people were abused. He declined the nomination: "I don't have to take money eat now while my future generation will suffer for many more generations. I won't sell the country and my honour because of my own sake. The population and the future generation is bigger than me."
Kubeka always says that the reason or being always right is not immediate but future. He was used of people telling him that he wasn't right with his view while talking to his friends, colleagues and even neighbors. He knew that it only after many years that they will remember his words and says that he was right.
He refused any kind of corruption. He wanted to die poor with dignity than dying rich with guilt.
Seven soldiers were deployed at that time to deliver the message. They all knew him as a philosopher and Thomas who couldn't even agree to any religion.
They begged him to report to the mayor office where the telephone existed so he may talk with Lusaka the capital city.
He had a time to enter his room give a kiss to his wife and children not knowing if he was coming back to his love one or he was going for ever. He took a jacket and he entered the soldier jeep outside his yard.
The soldier were begging him to reconsider is decision and accept to be the number one man in Tshale.
Tree o'clock in the morning. He took the phone in the mayor office and talked to Zambian president Kaunda that he rejected his offer and regretted to be part of abuser.
Kaunda was more impressed by the decision of this man that disappointed for him it was a man who had a potential to be a leader in Zambia: "Your opposition's comrade Tshiluba has recommended to name you."
Prof Kubeka wondered how a comrade can betrayed him? He respected this opposition leader. But he has refused to be part of politic anymore. They human's right watch wasn't helping the people in the far land to ask for change.
When they were tortured no one help them. The citizen for whom they were dying for leaving in fear even blamed them: "Don't play with politic, it is a dangerous game. Why did you try to play with fire politic."
Kubeka who had a problem to walk straight or seat on the chair properly because of the torture was so disappointed even by the people living in fear for whom he was fighting for.
He walk pulling one leg instead of bending the knee. He sit one bum instead of the two bum.
President Kaunda made s surprise when he connected him to Tshiluba. "Comrade accept the post. We are representing the majority. The world is changing, the democrat has beat the republican. Bill has beat George and me Tshiluba I will beat Kaunda."
Tshiluba wanted all the underground and not known opposing and retired opposition member like Kubeka to be part of the new government.
Tshiluba insisted: "Comrade, your victory has just the establishment of thing to come."
After the insistence of the future president Frederic Tshiluba, Kubeka accepted the task. But it was a hard as he thought. He has to take charge of the city immediately and the most immediate problem in the city a that time was the murder of a church goers Nashi. What makes that murder mysterious is that she was decorated like Jesus with a word love. The artist decorator and murder just fail to make a cross but indeed made a stake for the victim. He fail to find thorn hat but put an underwear with blood on her head.
He fail to find suitable writing pain but used the women blood to write love. He failed to dig that stake but plant it at the corner of the wall inside the tiny room.
First murder in many years in that town. A mysterious murder in Tshale.
Prof Kubeka was assigned to form a team to crack the murder. He went to the crime scene. Found already the crime scene sealed while hundred of neighbour come to witness the dramatic scene. Women crying and men vowing to mob any suspect.
Prof Kubeka look at the crime scene and couldn't believe that he could witness those crimes scene read in the book and saw on television in Tshale the city of peace.
The man surnamed Thomas because he wanted proofs and become an unwanted by the religion patricians took the courage entering the sealed area. While the rumors started circulating from the 2 soldiers that he was the new mayor of the city.
Shock to many people who never thought that the half crazy man of the city could have been given this position in middle of the night while people were waiting for the coming elections in few months.
Kaunda knew already that he was loosing the coming presidential election after being head of state for more than twenty years. He didnt want to hung on power like many head of state in Africa who will do everything not to leave that chair ready even to cheat and trick the election and even attack those candidates ready to beat him.
Everybody were looking at the new mayor to come up with a strategy to capture the killer. Prof Kubeka gave the order not to allow anyone to get closer to that one bedroom house. Most of the houses in that area had one or two bedroom. One room was often used us the parent rooms were they were sleeping with little kids while the other room were at day kitchen, living room and at night it was a sleeping room for visitors and grow up children.
Prof Kubeka was given on spot two bodyguard who were soldier and a driver. Prof Kubeka didn't know even how to drive any car.
Four o'clock in the morning he decided to take his new entourage in the jeep to head in one of the village situated at 50 kilometers of Tshale called Muvango.
Prof Kubeka unable to informs his family about what was going on in the city and country at the late night. Kubeka wife had no sleep has she was praying for God to save his husband. They were expecting many trouble before the election in the country.
Kubeka like a soldier in a war not carying about what he was wearing was on the new mission. He was still wearing is sleeping clothes: An old tired long white top and a long short with holes every where like if he escaped the nails of a wild animal.
Kubeka seating at the back of the chairs in the car. He changed from zero to hero. He was not even able to open the car door. The soldier and the driver started opening the door for him. He was moving in the next few hours in the most beautiful palace in Tshale after Ramy's house.
It was a well built house by the colonist with antique style two floors with many rooms. He could be able to call all his big extend family to live in that beautiful house. More beautiful that the president guest house. The house was meant to be a presidential house. The colonist wanted Tshale to be the capitol city of Zambia but after serious dispute among themselves they changed the policy choosing Lusaka as the capital city because it was more accessible to many part of the land while Tshale was closer to the Congolese border.
In fact Tshale was a apart of the cobalt belt. The Cobalt belt started in the South part of Congo to the northern part of Congo. The Belgian who were colonizing Congo and the British who were colonizing Zambia fought for many years for that rich part of the land.
The people from South Congo and North Zambia were the same people with one same traditional leader but the colonization were able to separate families and make them call each others foreigners and even able to create xenophobia.
That house was prohibited to be look at many times. Prof Kubeka has witness the drama of watching the beautiful mansion next to the big street Huwasa. He was passing by that street watching the beautiful house guarded by soldier. As a writer, researcher and curious man Prof Kubeka was able to admire and contemplate everything without fear.
But it wasn't a good day for the teacher, he was followed by the soldiers and had to be sent to the local police station for interrogation. He had to explain why he was watching the house so much. He was about to be charged of plotting to kill the mayor of the city.
In they culture they always says that you don't have to laugh at anybody because you don't know the future. It what really happened to Kubeka. They politicians felt that he was the only man in the city who can be the mayor and able to handle the people's trouble.
He has shown as a student in Lusaka when he was part of the opposition that is about to take over the reign in the country even thought he prematurely retired because of the torture.
A man who was about to publish a philosophical book of the Bantu with random house. The man who was able to understand different opinions of people and find a solution. But the man surnamed Thomas was hated by the die hard religions follower.
Kubeka felt some kind of anger trying to find a man who can help him to find a solution. He was convinced that when the sun rise everybody will know and the people will be very angry ready to mob all the suspected criminal and even attack the police stations.
Tshale was a city of crime free. People were able to leave thing outside their house and no one was stealing. The only robbers of the city were just petty crime robbers stealing domestic animals and sometime breaking in the houses and the first thing they used to do was to eat the food in the pots.
He arrived in Muvango just before five in the morning. The chicken were walking up the villager to go to work. Driving in the unpaved village avoiding the walking animal passing in the small streets. Watching by some villager with their tools who were curious admiring the vehicle in the village.
After passing hundred of houses, he gave the driver the order to stop on one of the house.
The driver and military were sure that he was going to meet a witch doctor for protection like believed by many African that all the successful people do. The politician and many people holding top post needed some kind of protection against the jealous people who wanted and envied they post. And wanted also to be more successful and loved by their superiors too and be able to dominate the inferiors at the same time.
It was one of the biggest house in the village with a small fence protecting the house. With a motorbike outside and an old track. The driver and the bodyguard watched the mayor of the city knocking at the house. This house wasn't in a clay house but it was build with modern bricks and painted with red and white colour.
The owner of the house should have been a very successful man in Muvango. After five minutes a woman come and opened the door and Prof Kubeka entered the house.
Kubeka was looking for the owner of the house Zaka Zaka. He knew this man for a very long time and they used to chat a lot. Zaka Zaka retired as a police investigator. Prof Kubeka loved this man because he was an hard worker and didn't like bribe. Zaka Zaka was forced to retired because of continually difference with his superiors. He find himself in the position that he even felt that his life was in danger. So he decided to retire at 45 years old five years ago and concentrate on his farm in village.
He left all the luxury things in town decided to return to his ancestors land where they were no electricity and water. They women has to take the water from the near bye village. The women has to take the firing wood in the bush. Man were doing agriculture to look after their families.
Kubeka managed to build a big house in the village more bigger than the one he rented in Tshale. He managed to put in the modern furniture. He managed to buy two tractors that helped him to be successful.
Kubeka waited for another five minutes for Zaka Zaka wife to call him.
Kubeka had the impression that Zaka Zaka has grown older. At fifty years he had plenty of white hairs. He become more darker with the sun burning him. It was a sign that he spend many hours under the sun in this village. But he pick up weight sign that he was having some kind of peace of mind and probably eat better.
They hugged each others. Zaka Zaka was wondering what Kubeka wanted from him early hours in the morning?
Kubeka told him: "I need your help."
"Help?"
"Yes, I need your help."
"How can I help you?"
Kubeka knew that Zaka Zaka won't accept easily his suggestion. He has made up his life and apparently enjoyed to retire at the early age and live in a small village far from the noises of towns far from the pressure of work.
"Help me to investigate a crime."
"No way."
Kubeka related him how he was named about four hours ago as the mayor of Tshale and he needed to crack the killer of Nashi and the artist who tried to decorate her as Jesus. He had very few faith in the investigation team in Tshale. He knew that Zaka zaka could have helped.
Zaka Zaka asked for forgiveness and light a cigarette. He knew that Prof was not a smoker, smoking in his presence was disturbing but he has just wake up and hear disturbing news and decided to smoke for a while.
Zaka Zaka had allergy for the investigation job. It was very difficult job for him even thought he used to watch many Europeans and American movie to get some tips but the reality in the developed world and under developed words were very different.
Zaka Zaka had to relied in the verbal proof often while in the developed country they were able to use even the technology on their side. He wasn't even able to get the fingers prints proof. He used to take the finger prints send it in Lusaka and wait for months to get the result and most of the time the result were always lost before they reach the court. Out of more than fifty finger sample only two reached the court and arrived in time to convict the criminal. He even decided to stop the finger print method.
He hated that job, while in many countries they were already using the DNA test and other genetic tests.
Zaka Zaka was pleased to hear that Kubeka potential were to be seen. He was happy that a respected man and clever man in his eyes has become a mayor of Tshale.
Zaka Zaka thought that Kubeka had even the potential to be a leader in Zambia and do better the job more than many ministers but this underrated ma living in semi rural semi modern town Tshale had no connection to expose his talent and natural ability.
Kubeka who had only one hours sleep related the all story and the drama to Zaka Zaka.
He sympathised and congratulated at the same time Kubeka.and answered: "With all the respect I always have for you. I think that I am not able to help you in this case."
Kubeka insisted and demanded to Zaka Zaka to help him only for this case. Kubeka dignity and reputation depended on this case. He insisted: "If you feel truly that I am the man of this job and be a leader in this country please support me only for this case."
Zaka Zaka thought for about 10 minutes. He wanted Kubeka to be one of the leader in Zambia. He had to support him. Then he finally accepted to help Kubeka just for this case. He knew that he won't be easy to find the killer and decorator. He had to accept to leave is activities for a while and return to towns for a while.
Zaka Zaka hated politician with all his heart. He told Prof Kubeka. "Kaunda was a leader on his time, the post colonial period but I don't think that Tshiluba is the answer to our misery too. They are all foreigners."
The post colonial period was characterized of none election period, this was to be the first election after 30 years.
They suspected Tshiluba, the president challenger being a from Congolese descent and the president Kaunda for being a Malawite. It how the two camps were attacking each other. Kubeka answered him before their left: " The origin do not matter as long their do their job well . They have been in this country for many year whether or not they are Zambian of origin or not."
Prof new heard about the two camp trying to elaborate on the originality of their leaders. The same was said about the Congolese dictatorship Mobutu people could accept that a citizen could mismanaged his own country they said that he was from Ubangi in central Africa not a Congolese. What about Eduardo Dos Santos of Angola who was said that he was originated from Cape Verde. Mwalimu Nyerere the well known head of state who promoted the African language Swahili ahead of the English from Tanzania was said that he was from Kenya. All most all the head of states where said from originally from the neighboring countries.
Zaka Zaka decided to follow him with his motorbike. The mayor's entourage don't know what the man with a motorbike was following them.
It was about half past six in the morning that the new mayor and the investigator arrived at the crime scene. This time close to one thousand people were in that street making difficult for the car to enter the street as the driver was hooting and the body guard shooting to people to leave the way to the new mayor.
They arrived find on the scene more soldier and police pushing the crowd away of the small room.
Zaka Zaka decided to get off the motorbike just tree hundred meter away from the scene, he was wearing his ex police top. It helped him to get his way through the crowd. Many were having machetes and other weapon include the traditional fighting stick called Panga vowing to kill the suspect.
Zaka Zaka lighted the cigarette to slow down his nerve. Most of the bigger smoker were policemen and him as a former investigator become so addicted to his cigarette that he makes sure that when he is in Lusaka he buy many boxes of cigarettes for at least a month.
In this city people were mobbing criminal. The government were against those practices and were arresting people who were taking the law on their own hands. They head few trust on the police and accusing the police of protecting criminal. The criminals were not scared of the police but were scared with the community.
It is why the crime was still very low in Tshale. The man caught raping a women was often killed with the beating. A robber who hurt the owner die too from the beating. All the pity robber made sure to rob but not hurt no one in that process. When they were caught and not having hurt no one they were not killed by the community.
The mobbing rule were called Eye for Eye and Teeth for Teeth. The killer was never pardoned by the community. No excuse for any murder. Some hunter who used to kill they wives and their friend in the dispute were often killed unless if they escape and run to the police. Eye for eye and teeth for teeth was also known as justice.
The last murder was eight years ago. A hunter killed his wife. Than the community member wanted to catch him and him was running toward the police and shooting to the follower people wounding 12 people and killing six others. The others hunters who had they hunting guns joined the community even thought most of them were is best friend. He managed to enter the police office but the community members over powered the police men and killed the man in the police office.
It was allow to hit on your wife or children as a way to educate or implement discipline but it wasn't forgivable when there is a death in that process. Everybody was a police men and police woman.
Zaka Zaka had a chance to arrive on the scene look at Nashi and the murder. He took what he wanted to start the investigation and support Prof Kubeka the new mayor.
It took him about ten minutes while the mayor who was still in his sleeping clothes was watching. He was wearing only an old T short with it he sleep with and an old advertising white Fanta drink T shirt with him. The advertising names was almost wipe off, because it was too old. No time to rest, his job was very challenging started five hours after his nomination.
After that, the police and the medical personnel were allowed to take the body. Zaka Zaka when wanted to leave Kotsho, Nashi's neighbours come complaining to the investigator about his lost animals. Zaka Zaka ignored him then two other people come complaining about their dogs who fled their yard too.
He took now this animals escape as a good lead may helping him to catch the criminal but told to the complainant: "We are not Masai to cry when a cow is dead or a Kasai to cry for a stones."
Then he decided to add: "I am not an investigator. I am just a curious former policemen."
They believed that the Masai a popular tribe of cow farmer in the East Africa cry once a cow dies more than when the human die. They believed too that the popular tribe of businessmen from Congo Kasai cry when they loose money or the stones more than when the human's die. When they talk about the stones they means the diamond.
Zaka Zaka who left Tshale for the village Muvango, had an house that he bought as a policemen but put already people renting. To go to the hotel it could have cost him plenty of money so he decided to rent a room like most of the people in Tshale until he complete the investigation. He didn't want people to acknowledge that he was doing the investigation.
Seven in the mourning radio Tshale announced the shocking news. First the resignation of the mayor and the nomination of a simple citizen called Prof Kubeka as the new mayor before the coming election. And the most awaited news the strange death of Nashi.
People were feeling the change in the world. Clinton winning the election over Bush. And people were sensing the coming victory of the opposition leader and trade union president Tshiluba over the long time serving leader of the country who wasn't a dictator like many African leaders Kaunda. The change was hitting the most powerful nation in the world and the others nation were hit by that change.
It was a shock for many citizen. Radio Tshale used to Broadcast from seven in the morning to seven in the evening with the evening. In that 12 hours broadcast they used to get 4 hours from the main radio station of the land Lusaka. Then after seven they give the relay to Radio Lusaka until midnight and close the station for the next seven hours.
Strange enough people who saw Prof in middle of the policemen not knowing what he was doing got the confirmation. Prof Kubeka nomination was well come by most of the citizen. But the religious leaders didn't welcome him as he was know as a Thomas who vowed to see miracle and action than believing to what is true from the Bible.
Prof Kubeka was originated from Tshale and the same time he shown to many people that he was a philosopher and thinker.
Politic wasn't a priority to this man, his priority was to see his books publish and thank to Random House who was accepted his scripture but were doing editing. Kubeka was not a fan of editing because he was scared that the original thought may be changed after many edition.
Prof Kubeka who was expected at school that Monday morning. The pupils were celebrating his nomination at school. While most of his colleagues who used to tease him were very quiet. But the principal was very happy and excited seeing his teacher as the head of the peaceful city Tshale.
Hundred of Kubeka friend and fun gathered at his two rooms houses while two truck were moving some of his belonging. The thing to be moved were books while the old furniture were left. Kubeka has to use the furniture in the mayor residence. Kubeka's wife took all the notes include duty small peace paper were Kubeka wrote some thing for the new residence. All the pot that he was using were thrown and given to the neighbours. Most of them were old and dark of colour because cooked on top of the wood.
Most of the clothes were left behind too, it was a new beginning. The second truck left the house without nothing aboard.
Kubeka himself didn't realize how popular he was and how well the population accepted his nomination. He was sure that only few people may support him but at the first impression, most of the people welcomed his nomination.
He was set to address the first public talk on radio Tshale at 12 o clock in the noon. Everybody wanted to hear what the philosopher will say and his comment about Nashi's death.
Kubeka went in his new office with a picture of the President Kaunda on top. He removed the former mayor's picture. He didn't have time to develop his picture an make it big and replace. This process takes place only in Lusaka and may take up to two days.
His table was cover with a mirror and tree leather chairs on that office plus a imported launch next door used as he waiting room.
Kubeka started by writing down what he has to tell to the population. He wanted to suit everybody, the majority of the illiterate population, the intellectual, the old and young. He decided not to make a very philosophical meeting. As a opposing student he used to think about what he will say now that he was in charge he was thinking about what he has to do. Thinks has changed from what to talk to what to do.
As a student member of the opposition he never dream of being given post but dreamed of implementing the human's right and the international democratic standard in Africa. But he decided to start where he was as a student in Zambia thinking about conquering the all continent.
Kubeka had a dream of an united Africa. He believed that Africa was one country like America separated by sea and Ocean only.
He hated to call his cousin in South of Congo and North of Zambia speaking the same dialect and sharing the same ancestor and end up calling each other foreigner. He hated to hear the Bakongo living in Congo, Angola and Congo Brazzaville being separated. He hated to hear the Zulu and Ndebele in South continent being in two countries South Africa and Zimbabwe. He hated to hear those separation and hated the new generation who accepted those separation. Now he wanted to return to the political dream of unifying the continent first as a mayor hoping to rise high. He hated to see the death of the African culture and religion. He hated to see in the Museum the African gods and mask exposed as doll.
Most of all, he hated to hear that African as under developed. He believed that there is no more developed country to others but they were only countries who were advanced in technology. Every culture and way of life was best to each one.
He loved the fact that they were no less beggar in African countries than the developed countries. He believed that with the return of the Ubuntu the African love, they will be no beggar and homeless in Africa. The traditional Africa is that everybody were member of the extend family.
He believed that happiness was not based on material but the happiness in heart with what he has. He hated people politician fighting for the presidency post while they may serve the nation even to any posts.
Before the most awaited interview in the land people were already expecting Kubeka of distancing himself from the community. They knew that most of the politician changes once get the political post. They only come to the population when they need to be voted and abuse of the people's trust. The former ordinary teacher could just be one of them.
People were waiting too the hear what he will say about the murder that happen in the peaceful city.
One hour before the address of Kubeka, Zaka Zaka come to see him in the office that he has already identify the suspect in the murders but he doesn't want to jeopardize the investigation in arresting him. He believed that the suspect was not alone. It may take up up to months to complete the investigation.
Prof Kubeka had a message for the upset public. He started by saying: "I am not a magician."
He begged the public to work hand in hand and help him to complete his job. The population always expect the authorities to perform miracles.
"My mandate his to continue and fight for the implementation of the democracy in the all continent starting by the city of peace Tshale. I will accept any post even as a cleaner to serve the population not to be served."
People were expecting him to praise the one who named him. Many thought that to be a politician was one of the easiest way to make money and be rich. Many politician used that political position to influence and take all the opportunity to make money for themselves.
"I am here to prepare the coming election. And we have to be patient, election won't solve all the problems immediately. The train of change is coming. Clinton has won the election in USA and comrade Tshiluba will lead our country for the next term."
Many people in Zambia didn't know what the election was. They only hear on the news on the overseas. They were anxious on witnessing the first election coming in Zambia. They had hope of the change and good life after the election. It was a way to back up his political comrade who influenced the president to name him and who insisted that Kubeka accept that post.
Kubeka refused to make long speech were politician talks for hours and at the end they don't say nothing, just a combination of sweet words. "I managed to secure hundred thousand USA dollar award for the man who will give us the information leading to the arrest of Nashi's murders and possible his accomplices."
This was a lot of money in a country were the was inflation everyday and people to keep stability were evaluating every price and the value of money in American dollar. It money Kwatcha had 100 Ngween or Cent in dollar. But the Ngween even disappeared on the market because the money has reached a inflation period where the cent mean nothing, unable to buy even a sweet.
This was the high reward that the government has offered for the capture of the criminal. Kubeka spend many times negotiating with his superiors from Lusaka the capital for the acquisition of that money. This proved how concern the authorities were regarding this strange murder. It is why they have offered the biggest award the country ever have offered.
Everybody hearing the radio were shock to hear that and everybody wanted an hand on that record money. "I beg the public not to take the justice on their own hand but work hand in hand with the police personal. Everybody must stay vigilant."
He insisted again with an African proverb: "It is not the same day that you eat a frog that you will get pimple."
A popular proverb hugging the citizen to be patient. A change do not come over night but it is a process.
He decided to hire in parallele with the police investigators a private secret investigators, the former retired police investigator Zaka Zaka.
At the end of the speech, he mention how he missed Pablo a curious Christian believer who was like a son to him. He disappeared after a clash with a sect members. They didn't know that he has crossed the sea. Pablo was Kubeka neighbour and a studied in his school where he graduated.
It was a call to the citizen to stop mob but begging them to trust the police. But at the same time urging the citizen to remain vigilant in helping the police. It was an impossible task because the community who had few trust into the police to work together. And at the same time he refused to urge the population to leave everything in the hand of the police themselves.
At the end of the radio speech everybody seems to be satisfy with the call of the surprise new mayor of the city. It was just a good start for the unexpected mayor.
CHAPTER TWO: SHAME ON YOU.
Zaka Zaka got the first accomplices, the hit man but decided to complete the job before he reveal what he wanted to reveal. He took him less than a week to get the hit man.
He got the murdered woman CV. She was a servant in the church called Tabernacle. It used to be known African Christian Church of Mzee. But after many followed fled the church, they changed a new name and emblem.
Zaka Zaka suspect that it was a part of the churches war who were fighting for followers. He decided to continue his investigations in the biggest formed churches in Tshale.
Zaka Zaka the investigator decided to continue his investigation. He took is motorbike a Yamaha 200 cc and wore one of his best black suit and black pant and decided to head to one of the newly formed church by two pastors called New Jerusalem.
It was more challenging than he thought. The churches were the safe places and preached against crime. But when it comes to find a crime in holy houses it was very complicated.
He went and park his blue motorbike outside a tent build church. New Jerusalem was donated a big tent before they finish to build their one thousand seat church.
They were very few cars parked outside the house of God. because many people didn't have money to own cars in that part of the world. Zaka Zaka was about five minutes late of the church service. He fixed the button of his suit and his tie. Zaka zaka hated tie and the suit, he hated to wear it in court to testify on the state behalf. He hated this kind of clothes as he always felt uncomfortable. With all the proceeding taking place in the court, he even concluded that the court was very boring than the hospital. He remembered that when he was sick in hospital meeting every kind of injured and sick people in hospital. On top of that the smell of the medicine in the hospital. But he concluded that the court was boring than the hospital. The criminal trying to flee and locked in the court room while the security his fortified. The judge talking and the prosecutor challenge the defense teams. The curious people coming to witness how people has lost they mind with crime. Listening to unusual stories.
Just when he entered the big tent with about 300 hundred people in the church. He was met buy two Christians who greeted him, "Welcome to the church for the first time". The were looking at the Bible he was carrying. It was knew while they were holding their. Zaka Zaka realized that it was because he was carrying a new Bible that they realized that he was knew in the congregation. He look at their, they were still in good shape but they page were duty because of continually reading the Bible's page.
he saw people at the entrance door wearing green and red uniform. Then when he walked passed them, he heard a water sound. Then he look at he two men he just passed he saw a big basin next to them. Then he saw them taking from that basin a bucket of water and thrown to him. Zaka Zaka knew that that in some church they throw just little water but he was not expecting a full baguette of water. They were very little space for him to escape the water. Just when he was about to complain he saw the other side the followers who were wet. And he realized that it was on of their practice. Then another man entering behind Zaka Zaka stopped of the two door man and they pour the water on him. It was to wash off the followers from the world bad spirit and a ceremony of cleaning the followers.
Zaka Zaka hated again this job he decided to return too to help his friend Prof to catch the killer of Nashi. The investigator job has to take him to the places he is not use to. Zaka Zaka haven't been in church for many years but all his family's member: his wife and children attend the church service. In this part of the world man were very resistant to churches but very few men are going to the church.
Without no complain Zaka Zaka went to seat at the back seat. He has to accept all the ceremony. He just wanted a clue that may help him to catch the other people's involved in the murder of Nashi Mambo. The people of the city were still angry with the police for not catching in time the criminals.
Pro Kubeka who hired Zaka Zaka to do the investigation has let the police too to try to find on their own way the criminals. The police and many people believed that it may have been a new ceremony from the ever growing sects in the city were they could have sacrificed a woman. At the other hand they couldn't understand why the animals at the place of the scene has run away and at the same time the animals disappeared some of them were caught two days later: goats, ships...but most of the dogs were still missing.
Zaka Zaka look at the big originally while tent but decorated in green and red the colour of the church. He saw it very nice into his eyes and wished that they keep partying in this tent. It has a big space inside and there was no way that the rain or the sun could had have disturbed the service. They managed to put even electricity for the speaker and big bulb inside. It was lovely. All the bench were quiet longer able to seat many people a bench and well put in order.
Zaka Zaka find the followers busy singing and decided to follow they hand beating. They were beating the hands very fast about two to tree clap the hand in second. Just after two minutes, Zaka Zaka felt the warm. It was a very hard exercise. They could had afford to buy the modern music equipment or even the traditional equipment that were very cheap such us the traditional drum or home made guitar. He realized that in this church doctrine they didn't want to use any musical instruments. But the clap of hand of many people suited the song and were really reliable music sound. The songs were quiet long about 20 minutes for each song.
Most of the clergy and the usher and other church personal were easy to identify because they were wearing red and green uniform.
Then Zaka Zaka saw a man in his late or early thirty after about tree songs to the podium. It was already eleven and Zaka Zaka felt little tired after singing about 3 songs.
The man called Zimbuya who was a junior pastor was about to preach. He started by saying: "Shame on you "
And all the followers followed: "Shame on you."
He open a big Bible he has. They were many version of the Bible but Zaka Zaka wondered why Zimbuya Bible was much more bigger? Zaka Zaka concluded because Zimbuya was wearing glasses that he may have eye's sight problems and in that Bible the size of the letters may have been much more bigger than the ordinary Bible.
Zimbuya repeated: "Brothers and sisters, shame on you."
The all congregation went: "Shame on you."
Zimbuya repeated: "Shame on you."
Everybody says. "Shame on you."
Zaka Zaka felt very uncomfortable for a while. Why Zimbuya has to insist, shame on you. May be shame on Zaka Zaka because he come to church not to pray like everybody but to continue his investigation. Or may be because he his a newcomer in the church or may be because he suspect them of being involved in the murder or may be because he hasn't accepted Jesus Christ as his saviour.
Zimbuya started the preaching while Zaka Zaka was trying to understand why the preacher insisted on shame on you: "Shame on you my wife for lying to me that you will love me for ever for better and worse but when I die you refuse to accompany me into my grave, you let me be buried alone. Where is the love? And 40 days later you get another man and forget me."
Zaka Zaka laughed after hearing this. It sounded true. When people get married they vow to love each other for the better and worst. But when one of them die, no one will accompany him into the grave or tomb.
The church followers supported him: "Shame on you."
Zimbuya open his Bible and tell the followers that in the book of Leviticus 19:18 Love your fellow like yourself. Jesus Christ has given us one commandment that synthesis all the ten commandment written in the Bible. He open the book of Luke 10:27, Love your neighbour as yourself. A man who loves his neighbour will never hurt his neighbours or do something wrong.
Zimbuya continued: "Shame on you, lawyer you spend many years at university to study how to lie and defend only the rich man who pays you."
The followers supported him: "Shame on you."
As a former investigator Zaka Zaka has experienced this kind of case. Where he arrest a rich men but because he has money hire a good lawyer who help him to win a case.
Zimbuya proceeded: "Shame on you bodyguards, security. You protect the famous people and the politician but fail to protect him when death comes. You fail to stop the disease and the microbe from entering your boss's body."
The all church went on: "Shame on you."
The disease, the virus, the microbe enter the rich men even the president without any visa or appointment in the body. It doesn't need any visa to enter the foreign body. The disease doesn't need a special invitation to enter people's body. Zimbuya opened the book of Proverbs 18: 10 The name of God is a strong tower. Into it the righteous runs and is given protection.
He continued that the Bible wrote that if God do not protect the one who protect, protect in vain.
Zimbuya than said: "Shame on you lawyers. You went to university and studied for many years just to learn how to lie and defend even the criminal. You learnt not to be ashamed because you of money."
"Who care" Zaka Zaka said to himself. Money makes the world go today. Zaka Zaka has heard how people in many Africans countries were untouchable with money. The poor criminal struggle in many of Africans jail were they was almost no food while the rich criminal walk free.
The all church went: "Shame on you."
Zaka Zaka remembered the lawyers in the court and all the thing come into his mind. The place that he called was more boring than the hospital.
Zimbuya continued: "Brothers and sister shame on you the insurance companies. I pay my due every months to ensure, my property and my expensive belonging pas you are not able to save my beloved one's life and my life."
People supported him: "Shame on you."
Zaka Zaka agreed with the preacher. If really there was insurance for everything, they insurance could have insured the life or richmen.
He insisted that it is only God who has the last words on the life and death of humans. No one could save their life when death knock at the door even the genus medical doctors who spend many years studying and specializing in human's diseases.
He continued: "Shame on you governments if this world. You promise good life to people on the mouth but not in action."
The church goers responded: "Shame on you."
Zaka Zaka couldn't agree more with the preacher comment and what he was trying to say. He had a respect of the government as an ex policemen. He used to fight the people in the community who were mobbing suspected criminals. Some innocent people died too from this practices.
He had the impression that people were becoming very lazy blaming the government and waiting the government to do everything for them even very simple stuff they could have done. Some villagers who lived thousand of Kilometers from the capital city Lusaka were waiting for the government to do everything for them even some simple stuff that they could have easily mobilize themselves and do.
He said that they don't build anymore schools and hospitals but build prisons. There is more bullet and gun into the world than toys. There is more retrenchment than employment into the world.
Zimbuya continued: " Shame on you smokers. The cars and airplane has exhaust pipe for the smoke from the petrol and other combustible but you make your noise that supposed to breath pure air your exhaust pipe. If God could have loved you to smoke he could have made an exhaust pipe on your body may be on top of your head."
The church goers agreed: "Shame on you."
Zaka Zaka laughed for a while he felt that it was a personnel insult. He is a smoker. He tried to give up these practices like many smoker but he is addicted to it. At certain stage, he was smoking each stick of cigarette saying that it was he last one but fail. He tried to be rehabilitee but keep returning to it. He often advises people that the really answer against smoking or bad habit is not to start. The first time you try to smoke and cough is a waking up call not to continue, it tell you to give up for life.
It started as fun, when Zaka Zaka started smoking. It was at school with a group of his colleagues. He wanted to be integrated in a cool group or clever people, intelligent, rebellious people who were smoking after school or in the break time. He wanted to be cool but he end up being addicted to nicotine. He formatted excuse that he was slowing down the stress but it doesn't help. All the warning on the pack of cigarettes and the consequences of smoking where not helping him anymore.
