chal.JPG (6611 bytes) An adventurer, scholar and visionary, Challenger is the driving force behind the ill-fated expedition. Leaving his wife behind in England he is seeking glory above all else. sum.JPG (20634 bytes) Initially, Summerlee was Challenger's greatest critic. In his youth, he had always wanted to explore the world. He did travel as a soldier, but he hated battle and found comfort only in his books.
It is his great failing that he not only needs to be right, but he needs the world to see that he is right as well. He feels responsible to return the group home but only with positive proof of the existence of the plateau. Professor Challenger has a vast knowledge of science which he uses time after time to build life-saving home-made devices. At home in England.  Challenger found most everyone beneath his attention. Now, in the Lost World, he begins to discover his humanity. Professor Summerlee was the skeptic about the existence of the plateau and the prehistoric marvels found there. At first he joined the expedition to discredit Challenger and ridicule him in front of the world. When he found that the Lost World did exist, he became the sole member of the party who would love to spend the rest of his life there.
