The prostate - a doughnut-shaped gland about the size of a chestnut - lies close to the rectum, below the bladder and surrounds the urethra. The urethra, the tube through which semen and urine are carried, passes right through the prostate. The prostate is normally soft and pliable. However, when the prostate becomes enlarged (hypertrophic), it often becomes rigid and can constrict, or totally choke off the urethra.
