| Before
Christopher Columbus, western sailors refused to venture very
far from shore because they believed that the earth was flat.
Someplace out there, they would come to the edge of the world
and then they could fall off into the great dark abyss. This
belief explained why certain ships never returned when they ventured
too far into the Atlantic Ocean. Later someone observed that when a ship sailed away from the harbour, the hull of the ship would disappear first, then the mast, and lastly, the flag at the top of the mast. That observation eventually led to the conclusion that the earth was round. Of course, the flat earth proponents ridiculed and persecuted those who opted for the earth being a sphere. Christopher Columbus proposed an expedition to India via the west, which was only feasible if the earth was truly round. Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain took the risk that Columbus was correct and Spain reaped rich rewards with the discovery of what is now "The Americas". That Paridigm Shift from the 'flat earth' theory to the 'round earth' theory changed the way that Western European Nations explored and prospered. Those who made the change in their thinking first, prospered the most. Shifting paradigms paid off. Many of our current paradigms need challenging. For example, when it comes to understanding why people die, we believe sickness to be the normal cause of our death. This is a paradigm that dominates the thinking of our medical community. When we get sick, we go to the doctor and expect that they will do everything in their power to make the sickness go away. Surgery, drugs and marvelous interventions are the tools that keep the sickness at bay for another day, until the sickness no longer can be treated successfully. Our bodies succumb to the disease and we die. There is another paradigm that is gaining ground even though it still receives great derision from a majority of the medical establishment. The new medical paridigm is that you can prevent illness and die at a much older age from simply wearing out - true old age. |
Scripture in fact supports this.
