If you show Symptoms of BPH ?
1. Watchful Waiting actually a medical term meaning
there's not much we can do for you - so wait until it gets bad
enough and then come back !
2. Alpha-Blocker Drug Treatment - these are a group of
very potent pharmaceuticals that cause relaxation of the prostate
muscles. There is no evidence that these drugs reduce the progression
of BPH to more serious complications - including the need for
future surgery.
Side effects occur in up to 50% of men taking these drugs. The most common side effects are dizziness, headaches, tiredness and difficulty getting and maintaining an erection.
Alpha-blocker drugs produce symptomatic
relief in only 50 - 75% of men.
3. Proscar (Finasteride) The most commonly used drug for prostate enlargement, Proscar, needs to be used for 6 to 12 months in order to achieve its full effect. Proscar can interfere with PSA levels and thus cause inaccurate readings upon testing for PSA. Proscar works in about 55 - 75% of men, however; approximately 5% of men taking this drug will experience impotence as a side effect, and less desire for sex, as well as a significant decrease in semen production.
4. Surgery (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate or TURP)
- This is the treatment most likely to cause major problems. Requires
a 3 day hospital stay and is effective in approximately 75 - 95%
of men. The risk of impotence from undergoing a TURP is 5 to 35%
and within 8 years, up to 15% of men will need a repeat operation
due to scar tissue blocking the urinary tract.
Now . . . . . . There is a kinder, more gentle option that really works.
