Specializing

What sort of thief do you want to be?

As a thief, you may specialise according to what sort of thief you want to be, and what you want to be good at. There are 5 specializations: Safecracker, Mugger, Prowler, Smuggler and Cutpurse. The only difference between these is the primaries (skills you can advance to a high level at the guild). Be carefull! You must specialize before level 30 and it is forever. Also, some of these do not get covert.manipulation.stealing as a primary. Be sure you want to take this step!

Some of these may seem useless (people have often accused the Safecracker specialization as useless), however new features are being put into the mud (such as player houseing) to make previously less advantageous specializations of thief more useful.

Below is a list of primaries for each of the specializations. The difference between the stealth skills and the hiding skills are explained in further detail here.

Primaries that all specializations get:

Now here is a list of the different specializations and the primaries they get in addition to what has already been listed.

  1. Prowler: This is the thief you will become if you dont specialize. Weak in the fighting area, but very talented in the sneaking around and makeing money area. In addition to the above, they get:
    • covert.lockpick.doors
    • covert.lockpick.traps
    • covert.manipulation.stealing
    • covert.manipulation.passing
    • covert.manipulation.palming
    • covert.casing.person
    • covert.casing.place

  2. Safecracker: Your general dressed in black, sneaking around and going places he shouldn't to stuff shiny things in his sack type-man. Does not have stealing as a primary or a fighting primary and is one of the less popular specialisations. As well as the primaries common to all, they get:
    • covert.lockpick.doors
    • covert.lockpick.safes
    • covert.lockpick.traps
    • covert.items.traps
    • covert.manipulation.passing
    • covert.manipulation.sleight-of-hand
    • covert.casing.place

  3. Mugger: The most fighty of all the thieves, this charming example of humanity likes to overcome any financial problems by performing hasty surgery on his victims with big weapons. As well as the primaries all thieves get, they get:
    • covert.lockpick.doors
    • covert.manipulation.palming
    • covert.manipulation.stealing
    • covert.casing.person
    • covert.casing.place
    • fighting.combat.melee.sharp
    • fighting.combat.melee.blunt

  4. Smuggler: Guaranteed to get the best possible price for any goods which come into his possesion, this fellow has been described by the more uncouth members of our population as a "dirty pirate". We prefer to use "untrustworthy bastard". Does not have stealing as a primary. As well as the primaries that all thieves get, they get:
    • covert.manipulation.palming
    • covert.manipulation.passing
    • fighting.combat.melee.sharp
    • other.valueing.weapons
    • other.valueing.armour
    • other.evaluating.armour
    • other.evaluating.weapons

  5. Cutpurse: Your man on the street, just trying to make a living any way he can (ie by very carefully stabbing his victims or cunningly removeing all their clothing and possesions while they wait for a carriage). As well as the common primaries, they get:
    • covert.lockpick.doors
    • covert.manipulation.passing
    • covert.manipulation.stealing
    • covert.manipulation.palming
    • covert.manipulation.sleight-of-hand
    • covert.casing.person
    • fighting.combat.melee.pierce

The above lists again in a format in which all of the lists also include common primaries.
