Chapter 7 Chemical Quantities The Mole = Avogadro's Number |
Sec.1 - The Mole: A Measurement of Matter The molar mass of any substance (atoms, molecules, formula units, ions, etc.) measured in grams will contain ONE MOLE of those representative particles. 1. Describe how Avogadro's number is related to a mole of any substance. 2. Calculate the mass of a mole of any substance. |
Avogadro's number representative particle gram atomic mass (gam) gram molecular mass (gmm) gram formula mass (gfm) |
Sec.2 - Mole/Mass & Mole/Volume Relationships The MOLAR MASS of any substance is the mass in grams of one mole of the substance. At STP, one mole of any gas will have a volume of 22.4 L. 1 - Use the molar mass to convert bewteen mass and moles of a substance. 2 - Use the mole to convert among measurements of mass, volume and number of particles. |
standard temperature & pressure-STP molar volume |
Sec.3 - Percent Composition & Chemical Formulas The percent composition of any substance equals the mass of each component substance divided by the total mass of the sample, multiplied by 100 = % 1 - Calculate the percent composition of a substance from its chemical formula or experimental data. 2 - Derive the empirical formula and the molecular formula of a compoind from experimental data. |
