It was the space program that had the most profound impact on me. I was twelve when NASA sent a man to the moon. I remember writing for free pictures on the event. I watched it on television- and because of satellite the whole world watched too. It did not seem real to me until I had the visual evidence in my hand. The government made these pictures available and I really felt that these images were historically profound. I did not know that I had a world view until I heard comments on CBS News that America had beaten Russia to the Moon. It was an incredible feat- to think that the Moon was a million miles away, it caused me to ask questions and to seek information about the Moon and the significant effect it had on the planet Earth. I was aware of the larger world because of the death of JFK, MLK, and RFK. Next to the World Series and the Olympics, nothing had instilled a badly needed shot of optimism and hope as did this single event. I never thought I would go to the Moon-it was just nice to think that we had the ingenuity to get there. As a result of the Moon mission, we also got a first glimpse of the Earth from the moon which had a profound influence toward an environmental movement. |
