Johnsie gets used to being Mr. Imbruglia.
As the world knows, Daniel Johns and Natalie Imbruglia were married in a private ceremony at Port Douglas on the last day of last year. It was a major international media event that took a lot of organising to keep under wraps.
“That was our main concern,” says Johns. “Because we wanted the closest people to us to be there, but there’s no way to get 150 people somewhere without someone knowing something. So we just hired the whole place and put everyone up. It was fun. It was a good night And the paps didn't get nuttin’. It was cool.”
Providing the music for the evening’s entertainment were Paul Mac and his housemate. DJ Seymour Butz. “From the instant I was getting married, it was like, ‘Paul and Johnny [Butz] are DJing.’ And they did just the best set ever - we were just all dancing and having fun.”
Johns now spends most of his year with Imbruglia in London. It's been a life- changing experience for him, able to move about in public almost anonymously. It's taken some getting used to, he admits, but he doesn't go completely unnoticed. “It still kind of super-weird,” he says. “I’ll be standing at a checkout, trying to get groceries, trying to be really discreet; I’ll have my head down and my hat on and sunglasses. And you’ll hear, ‘That’s Natalie Imbruglia’s husband!’ [laughs] I’m just like, ‘Do not acknowledge this shit! Do not turn around.’ It's pretty weird, fucking mental.”
