I spent the last two nights firmly entrenched at McGoff's Irish Pub in Mankato to enjoy a rare thing...good Irish drinking music. A St. Paul band called The Tim Malloys were playing this weekend. They are one of the funnest groups I've ever heard play. They play these great Irish songs, and spend their time in between bantering with the crowd (and each other), making toasts, and drinking whiskey (Jameson Irish Whiskey, to be exact).
I would sit back in my booth with a Guinness and a Jameson of my own, and just sing along with the tunes. I would yell out a comment at the band from time to time (They especially liked my "Erin Go Braless" suggestion).
I had seen them at Kieran's in Minneapolis, but McGoff's is much more intimate. I was able to talk to the band during set breaks, and I bought a CD and got it autographed (One of them signed it "Whiskey!!!").
The songs are so perfect for a bar. The anti-British sentiment makes it all that much more fun. For example, "We're off to Dublin in the green (Fuck the Queen!), where helmets glisten in the sun  (Fuck her sons!)." The crowd yells out the parts in parentheses, and it's almost impossible to resist yelling out "Fuck the Queen!", no matter how little Irish is in you. Everyone's Irish when the band is playing.
They interspirsed they're music with toasts whenever anyone bought them another whiskey ("And we'd like to encourage this kind of behavior"). I have added many of these toasts (the ones I could remember) in the "Things" page.
It was such a great break from the dance bars with their "Butt" music. I just don't think "Who Let the Dogs Out?" captures the spirit of what bars are supposed to be. I feel much happier hearing "Cannae Throw Your Granny" than "The Thong Song." We need more Irish bars in which to enjoy good music.
Check out the link to the Tim Malloys to find out when and where they are playing. If you're in the Twin Cities, go enjoy a show. Get a drink if you're old enough. Sing along. Have some fun.
And Fuck the British Army.
