Well, there is finally a nation in this fine world of ours that believes in human dignity. Suprise, suprise, it's the Netherlands.
The Netherlands have recently passed a law allowing euthenasia. I know, you don't know any kids in the Far East. But seriously, why is it Holland that is always on the side of personal rights?
First, they have legalized drug use. Then gay marriage. Now, the ultimate freedom; The right to choose to end your own life.
Why is this so hard for people to accept? Are we so selfish that we will let our loved ones live in agonizing pain, just so we can have a few more days with them? Oh, you say that doctors will be killing people left and right, just to save money? Not likely. We really should have more faith in our medical system than that.
In practice, the Niedelander law will allow doctors to administer a leather drug injection to patients. First, however, the patient must have at least two doctors say that this procedure is acceptible, and that the patient has no other recourse to end their pain. And remember, Marijuana and Heroin are legal there. No pain relief is a very drastic situation for a Hollander.
Holland has had an accepted euthenasia practice for years, in which the patient themself had to administer the injection. Now, doctors will be allowed to do so, as long as there is legal documentation from the patient saying that this is what they want.
Oregon tried to pass an "Assisted Suicide" law, that was shot down by the "Supreme" Court. However, it is thought that standard practice is to allow patients to admisiter their own injections. While somewhat illegal, it is more of a slap on the wrist that doctors of terminally suffering patients seem to accept as necessary.
In this fine country, we think it is OK to kill criminals (usually only if they're poor and black), but when it comes to a suffering, terminally ill person, we say, "Oh, no. Life is too precious." Get over yourselves.
We all die. We should be allowed to die on ou own terms. If it is through drug use, fine. If it's through indiscriminate sex, fine. The problem is that these two actions will often hurt others. I understand why they are seen as bad. But why is a final stage cancer or AIDS patient, who lives day to day in agonizing pain, just waiting for death to take them, forced to live those days? We force them to live, but won't let them do whatever they want to relieve their pain. Maybe if they were smoking weed and shooting up heroin, they wouldn't mind living a few extra days. I know it sounds crass, but the dying should be exempt from any law that stops them from hurting themselves. As long as the dying aren't harming others, let them do as they please. And if they want to die, let them. If they're going to a "Better Place," why not give them an early ticket away from the pain of their life right now. It would be a step in the direction of enlightenment for our nation.
I'm Ken Feucht, and I don't want to die right now.
