I wanna be a rock star/ I wanna be like all those people up in first class/
I wanna be a rock star/ I wanna tell the little people that they can kiss my ass
"Rock Star" Everclear
It wasn't my intention, but I have decided to name this entry and the last "Malaise and the Oscars," because I will be speaking of both malaise and the Oscars in them both. Pretty clever, don't you think.

So having been single again for about 2 weeks, it makes me wonder how I made it nearly 2 years single before my last girlfriend. I find myself wanting to call her, not for any emotional reason, but because I am bored and looking for something to do. A girlfriend is there to talk to or go out and do something with. When you don't have many other friends, this is a wonderful thing. I don't have many other friends. I realize my life before was more full, with school and work. But now, I have very little school, and work is during times I normally slept. Thus, I am awake more, with more freetime, and no one to spend it with. That is why I am filling this sight, slowly but surely, with
song lyrics. Also, my favorite message board, which was down for a long time, then came back, is unavaliable to me. So there's at least another hour I have to sit around and twiddle my thumbs. Or write here.
Thank Mystra I'm back writing for the
newspaper, or I would really be lost.
(Closed circuit to Christy - There's no reason to be scared.)

And the winner is...
Ah, the Oscars. First, the positives.
Denzel Washington (
Training Day) got his much deserved Best Actor statue. Everyone is going on about how he only won because he is black, but frankly he had one of the best performances I've seen in a long time. Russel Crow was good, and I've said he would win an Oscar, but Sam Jackson was much better as a schizo in "The Caveman's Valentine,"* even if no one saw it. Meanwhile, Denzel expanded his range by 1000% to make his bad cop seem real.
Kudos also to Halle Berry (Monsters Ball). I didn't see it, but I'm sure she deserved it more than Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge).
"Gosford Park's" win for best original screenplay was a plus, but it is a shame it had to come at the expense of "Memento" and
"The Royal Tennenbaums," two of the most original movies in years.
Now come my disapointments.
"A Beautiful Mind" was a great movie, but "Gosford Park" was so original and smart, it would have been a great victory for art films. "Lord of the Rings" was great as well, but I don't see anyone deciding the LOTR films really deserve Best Picture.
Who is Jim Broadbent (Iris), and why did he take an award away from Ian McKellan (LOTR)?  Broadbent was good in "Moulin Rouge," and I didn't see "Iris," but seriously, who is this guy?
Jennifer Connely is very pretty, but she didn't really do anything in "Mind." If anything, she should have gotten an award for "Requiem for a Dream." Of course, that movie should have been heaped with awards.
I was also a little dissapointed by "Shrek" winning Best Animated Picture. It was a great film, absolutely, but "Monsters Inc." had so much more heart, soul, and originality. While "Shrek" was a variation on a theme,
"Monsters Inc." was an entirely new song. I guess it would have been hard to choose between the two. But since "Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within" wasn't allowed within a chocobo's ride of the Oscars, I am happy.
I am also pissed that "Pearl Harbor" was allowed at the Oscars, let alone their victory for sound editing. Sweet merciful crap! "Pearl Harbor" was crap, but it wasn't sweet and merciful. Why not give "Monsters Inc." another statue. It deserved another.
Also, I was mad that "Freddy Got Fingered" wasn't nominated in the "Tom Green Should Be Shot" category. Wait, now I'm being told that category doesn't exist. All right, I feel better.

I'm Ken Feucht, and I'm going to the movies.
* If you would like to read my review of "Caveman's Valentine," I would be happy to e-mail it to you.
