Discordianism reared it's ugly head in the late 50's. It's cofounders, Greg Hill and Kerry Thornley were a couple of deviants who decided to try and commit the all-time great hoax; creating a 'religion' that would undermine and erode the values and structure of western civilization, without ever being taken seriously enough to be stopped. They began by writing the Principia Discordia, the Discordian Bible (which was first titled "How the West was Lost") and disseminating it throughout various counter-culture communities. They created a variety of lies about what it was and who wrote it, attempting to fuel rumors and stir people's curiosity. By 1970 the Principia had gone from total obscurity to 'legitimate' cult status. It was then quoted often in the novel 'Illuminatus!' by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson which was published in the mid 70's. Discordian cells, calling themselves 'cabals' began springing up all over. And the inner core, who had been establishing itself and it's agenda over the previous 10 years finally had its huge pool of resources to work with. From the begining, Discordians have done their best to get people in or close to important offices. Thornley was a close friend of Lee Harvey Oswald and a member of a covert Marxist organization in the Marines. After the Kennedy assasination District Attorny Jim Garrison discovered conclusive evidence that linked Thornley to the assasination, yet he was never charged. Ironically,(?) the first copies of the Principia Discordia were printed off on Garrison's photocopier at the D.A.'s office by an assistant of Garrison's. And so it has grown, surrounded by lies, crime and trechery every step of the way. |
