The Founder

For our times and for the needs of modern men and women, God raised up Venerable JAMES ALBERIONE and his followers. He was born at San Lorenzo di Fossano in Italy on April 4, 1884. He founded five religious congregations, 4 secular institutes and an association of lay cooperators, all of which make up the Pauline Family. He died in Rome on November 26, 1971 and was proclaimed Venerable by Pope John Paul II in July 1996.

THE PIOUS DISCIPLES OF THE DIVINE MASTER (PDDM)

Living and active presence of Jesus in the world today

The Pious Disciples are Contemplative - Apostolic Religious living in communion in an atmosphere of prayer and active-loving silence, following Jesus the Way, the Truth and the Life in imitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in praise, adoration, reparation, and supplication especially for the apostolate of social communication and for the evangelization of humanity.

On February 10, 1924, we were founded by Venerable James Alberione in Italy as a vital part of the big Pauline Family. We are present in 30 countries all over the world. Our mission is to proclaim Jesus Master through the Eucharistic - Priestly - Liturgical Apostolate for the glory of God and the salvation of all.

THE FOUNDATION OF THE PIOUS DISCIPLES OF THE DIVINE MASTER
PHILIPPINE-TAIWAN-HONG KONG PROVINCE

One of the four congregations that comprise the big Pauline Family, the Pious Disciples of the Divine Master was founded by Venerable James Alberione on February 10, 1924 in Alba, Italy.

Thirty-two years later, on August 25, 1956, three Italian sisters came to the Philippines from Rome to begin witnessing to the beauty and nobility of the PDDM vocation in Asia. After staying with the Daughters of St. Paul in Pasay City for sometime, Srs. M. Pierra Marin, M. Lidia Drudi, and M. Clementina Dragone began looking for a house, deciding later to settle on St. Scolastica Street, also in Pasay. It was also at this time that they began collaborating with the Society of St. Paul, which had been in the country since the late 1930s.

Four years after the foundation, three young Filipinas made their first religious profession. They took the names Sr. M. Fides, Sr. M. Speranza and Sr. M. Charitas, representing the three theological virtues upon which our Christian life stands. On May 31, 1960, the sisters opened the first Liturgical Apostolate Center on Taft Avenue, Manila. On March 1964, the Formation House was inaugurated in Antipolo, Rizal.

For the next thirty years, the congregation grew and developed. A community and liturgical center opened in Cebu City on June 29, 1971. Ten years later, on January 26, 1981, the sisters ventured on the construction of the Alberione Oasis, Home for Priests, across their convent in Antipolo. The sisters never lost sight of their mission as the "bridgehead of evangelization in the east". In November 1982, three Filipina sisters were sent to respond to the invitation to begin a community in Taipei, Taiwan. There are now eleven sisters there, serving in two communities - in Hsin Tsien and Hsinchuang, and, last November 2001, three sisters were assigned at the Apostolic Nunciature of China.

The sisters opened another community and liturgical center in Davao City, even as collaboration with the Society of St. Paul (SSP) priests and brothers continued. Two small communities were opened in the SSP Novitiate in San Fernando, Pampanga and in the SSP Seminary in Silang, Cavite.

Another important milestone in the life of the Philippine foundation was the opening of the Regional House in Quezon City on January 24, 1994. Incorporated in the Parish of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Regional House community involve themselves and collaborates in parish activities such as the animation of the 6 a.m. Sunday Parish Mass.

With the opening of the Regional House, the consolidation of the liturgical apostolate became a reality. The Central Liturgical Apostolate of the Philippine-Taiwan Region (CLAPT) was formally established for better organization and more effective operation. On January 24, 1999, the sisters dream of constructing a Eucharistic-Priestly-Liturgical Center that will consolidate the three-fold dimension of their mission to serve Jesus Master in the Eucharist, the Priesthood and the Liturgy was realized with the blessing of the new, five-storey building now known as the PDDM Apostolic Center in Manila.

A very significant and important milestone of the Philippine foundation in the Great Jubilee Year 2000 was the ERECTION of the PDDM Philippine-Taiwan Region into a PROVINCE on February 13, 2000, with Sr. M. Peter Evardone, designated as the first Provincial Superior. The new Provincial Government was installed on February 28, 2000 during the celebration of Vespers which was attended by members coming from the different communities of the Province.

The Great Jubilee Year 2000 has also graced us with the realization of our founder's dream of a mission for immense China: the new foundation in Hong Kong which formally opened on June 30, 2000. The new community is composed of three sisters: Srs. M. Paola Yue, M. Gabriella Pablico and M. Martha Bruan. One works at the Hong Kong Diocese Liturgy Commission to assist in the on-going construction/ renovation of churches/ chapels; publication of the diocese's liturgical bulletin and in the liturgical catechesis now being intensified both in Hong Kong and in Mainland China. Another works in one of the big parishes for the animation of the Filipino community. The third sister helps in the maintenance of the chapel at the Caritas Medical Centre. The said chapel is hoped to be open for adoration, where people might be drawn to pray and adore Jesus Master, present in the Blessed Sacrament

The PDDM has been in the Philippines for forty-five years, blessed with a steady growth in communities and personnel. There are now 100 professed members (eighty-eight perpetually professed and twelve temporary professed), including a Chinese sister from Hong Kong, an Italian, a Korean and a Japanese; 71 are in the Philippine-Taiwan-Hong Kong Province while 17 are in various missions in Rome, Ireland, Canada, USA, Australia and France. There is also a steady entry of young people. Currently, there are two novices, three prenovices and six pre-postulants.

At this challenging stage of their maturation as an institute, the sisters have opted to commit themselves more consciously and concretely to the work of renewal in the local church and in the world journeying toward the new millenium.

The Pious Disciples praise and thank the Lord for the 46 years of their foundation in the Philippines this current year 2002. They have a reason to celebrate August 25 even as they look forward to the 50th anniversary four years after.
