Bes - Ancient Egyptian God of
the Middle Class. He was worshipped for his powers pertaining to
fertility, merriment, and music-making. What better God to worship?
The Disciple of Bes is a
Middle Eastern music ensemble made up of Martin Safford-Cameron's
improvisational work on the violin, and Jake Botticello's rhythms on
various hand-drums, including the djembe (African) and the doumbek
(Turkish/Arabian).
The original concept of the CD
was to put together a full-length recording of various Middle Eastern
music, geared mostly towards bellydance performance. The CD
turned out to be a compilation of tracks that overflow with the
improvisational connection that Martin and Jake seem to share.
"It's trippy," says Jeff
Miers, in a review for The Buffalo News. "But more than that, it's
highly evocative of some sort of dream state, where one loses all sense
of time." "The Disciples weave an other-worldly web of Eastern intrigue
that hints at various indigenous musics while managing to hold on to
its own hybrid vision."
The CD was recorded by Marc
Hunt and Ed Hallborg at Chameleon West Studios in Buffalo (www.chameleonwest.com).
It was mixed and
mastered by Marc Hunt.
