Disc RecommendationsContrary to "stick" golf, you only need one disc (club) to play disc golf. In fact, many beginners use a traditional frisbee instead of a disc because that's what they feel most comfortable with. Unfortunately, as they progress as disc golfers they will quickly feel limited using a frisbee instead of a disc.
The main difference between a frisbee and a disc is distance. A good disc golfer can throw a disc well over 300 ft. Discs also provide a much more predictable flight path with a selection of flight patterns depending on the disc. Believe it or not, two identical throws will yield completely different flights patterns depending on the disc.
So what disc(s) should you get? There is no simple answer because it's highly dependant on your skill level, throwing style and the flight that you are trying to achieve. With hundreds of discs on the market claiming to do all sorts of things, it's tough to really understand what you are getting without trying it. Your best bet is to play with an experienced player (they typically carry 10-15 discs) and ask him if you can try some of his discs throughout the round. Disc golfers love promoting their sport and will probably end up giving you one of their old discs by the end of the round. Of course if this isn't an option, these are our recommendations.
Rico's Recommendation:
If you want just one disc...
Stingray by Innova. In my opinion, this is the single best transitional disc for a beginner going from a frisbee to a disc. It's flight style is very similar to that of a frisbee but with greater overall distances.
If you want a "starter set" (putter, midrange and driver)...
Aviar by Innova. This is the most popular putter used in disc golf. Anything 50 ft or closer to the basket, this disc dominates.
Stingray by Innova. Great mid range disc. Perfect for distances between 50-200 ft.
Valkyrie by Innova. This is one of my favorite driver discs of all time. It's a little dicey in the wind, but when you throw it just right...watch out. You can throw this anywhere from 200-400 ft.
