Indicate wether the following are true or false: a) The QWERTY keyboard is more efficeint than the DVORAK keyboard =FALSE b) The keyboard is the most popular output device =FALSE c) Light pens are used to draw on the computer =TRUE d) A trackball is similar to an upside down mouse =TRUE e) A print-out is often referred to as a soft-copy =FALSE 2. Fill in the blanks: a) A mouse is an input device. b) An advantage of a plotter is that it can use paper of different sizes. c) LCD is an abbreviation for Liquid Crystal Display. d) A joystick is commonly used with games. e) The printer with the best quality output is the Laser Printer. 3. Complete the following: Item Input/Output Function Printer Output Makes hard copys of text or images on paper. Keyboard Input Used to enter symbols, letters or numbers into a computer for different resons. Mouse Input Used to move a cursor on a screen. Light Pen Input Used for drawing with graphic programs. Touch Screen Input Enter data by detecting the touch of your finger. Document Reader Input Reads text from hardcopy forms by detecting lead from a pencil. Disk Drive Input+Output Saves data and sends data to other drives. Barcode Reader Input Reads barcodes and sends data to computer. Monitor Output Displays visual soft-copy data from a computer. Plotter Output Makes hard-copy's of work on paper. 4. Short answer questions: a) List four classifications of computers: supercomputers, mainframes, minicomputers and microcomputers. b) What is the function of the CPU (central processing unit): Process input to give out output into an output device. c) What is the function of the Arithmatic Logic Unit: Is the part of the CPU that carries out all the mathematical and logical calculations. d) Outline the difference between primary and secondary storage: Primary storage is the part of the computer that holds data and programs before and after been processed by the CPU. Secondary storage is a more permanent storage area than primary storage that uses a device such as a hard drive or floppy disk. e) What is RAM? Random access memory, where data is stored temporarily. f) What is ROM? Random only memory, holds data and instructions which are fixed and can not be changed by the operator or the computer. g) Provide two examples of secondary storage devices: Floppy disk and hard drives h) Name the three common printers: Dot-matrix printer, laser printer and ink-jet printer. i) Compare the three printers listed above: Laser Printer- High quality output but at a greater expense. Ink-Jet Printer- Resonable quality output at an affordable price. Dot Matrix Printer- Poor quality output at a cheap expense, good for printing text. This test was out of 60. I managed to get 50/60, these answers should be all correct as I used my text book to fix up my mistakes. Comming Soon: Half Yearly Exam, will be posted when it is completed, marked and handed back. |
