Wrevelations
By Joe Sammur
Memorial Day is upon us, and as always, it marks a time of change. From fashion to weather, the holiday weekend seems to signify the transformation of an entire country, and professional wrestling is no different. One look around at the current state of our circuit is more than enough to discern that we are indeed in a state of metamorphosis.
For starters, the former NEWF and current NPWA kicked off its first show just last night, culminating with the crowning of a new Television Champion, in Michael Draven. Ever since Miss Chang has used her various connections in the business (see: money) to add the NEWF to her multimedia conglomerate known as DEVine Inferno Entertainment, things have definitely heated up. Sex and violence may not be strangers to the world of wrestling, in fact, theyre practically a kinky threesome, but if Sunday Night Sabotage was only a taste of whats gonna be dished out on Monday Night Malice, Id say everyones going to be changing the way the think of primetime sports entertainment. An announcement by Chang to kick off the program cant help but offer fan service by the truck loads, and the Hardcore Rules triple threat match immediately following should also include plenty of blood and crazy spots, but to live up to the hype that the NPWA has been throwing out to the press and fans alike, its gonna take a lot of surprises later in the show. Lets hope that that Miss Chang, and Veep Simurda for that matter, can deliver.
A move from New England to Dallas isnt the only major change going down, though, as just three days after the NPWA opens its doors, the EWA will debut its Wednesday Night Warfare, 21st century style. Its been over a year and a half since the EWA closed shop, but sporting a roster and an opening night like it is, one cant help been welcome it back. Also featuring a Hardcore triple threat match, itll be interesting to see if they can top the NPWA in that respect, and if they do, whatll that mean for the NPWAs supposed violence angle? Moving on, however, is of course, the match that never happened. A match that could quite possibly make or break the EWAs chances of rivaling the NPWA, the main event is sure to pull a lot of viewers in just by dropping the names. Jack Daniels, Harding Cash, and Erik Draven, and it isnt even a Pay-Per-View! But President Gates isnt putting all his eggs in one basket, hes also assembled quite an undercard, featuring seasoned EWA vets like Jublome, Raven, and KG, along with an assortment of younger talent.
And speaking of younger talent, that brings us to the hotbed of controversy, as always, the NYSWF. It seems that everyone and their sportswriter has their eulogy prepared for the NYSWF, but this reporter couldnt be more confident in the future of the fed. True, it is no longer sporting the big names of the EWA and NPWA, but dont forget who had a hand in sculpting a lot of those very wrestlers. Whether you love him, or you hate him (probably hate him) Corey Collins is the undisputed master at taking raw talent, and molding them into superstars, and has he ever had a larger collection of raw talent than he does now? The Big Japan Classic 2001 proved to more than a few that the NYSWF can still draw an audience, and can still deliver one helluva program. I wouldnt be surprised at all if in a few weeks people are looking at guys like Loco Martinez, Azazel, and the newly-crowned NYSWF World Champion, Dark Messiah in a whole new light. Throw in guys like Spiral, NOTHING, and the skyrocketing Jonathon Storm, and Im just not seeing the end for the NYSWF any time soon.
And so, with change, comes progress, and with progress, comes a great time to be a wrestling fan.
