Marking Out

By Scuba Steve

"So you wanna be a champion?!" So goes the words to the theme song of Evan Douglas...by the oh so untalented Aussie band Grinspoon. Yeah, the same ones who butchered Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck by Prong...A champion means your a step above the rest. It means your the best at what you do. And while, in wrestling, we can have several champions, it never takes away the signifigance of one man holding gold on his shoulder, standing next to another man, who has nothing. And therefore, I write this column. Marking Out: Diary of a champion. Today, we pick on the reigning nyswgoth champeen, Loco Martinez.

If there's one guy in this circuit right now, that has gained everyone's support, its Loco. He's got that same little stride of fans, and the same kinda of support and charisma that made Sean Sanders the NYSWF's 'favorite' wrestler last year. Loco's traveling down the near same exact path. Whether that's good or bad, you tell me...but if we see Loco shocking us by pinning Smirtdogg in the next few weeks...we'll all know for sure.

Onto the title reign! The Northern Atlantic Hardcore Title....Both titles had been unified after thier holders left the federation. The original match was scheduled to be Pablo Hernandez, Loco Martinez and Dark Messiah, and it would all go down at Broken Home, the NYSWF's March PPV.

The Match: Pablo ran out of the NYSWF for contract disputes. So now we're set with just Loco and Messiah here. Still could be a helluva matchup. Loco sporting a nice Smiley t-shirt here....hey, cheesy gimmicks are over nowadays, just ask Sanders. Loco offers Messiah a handshake, Carson says, "Dodis", WHAM! Messiah just plasters Loco. And it looks like this one is on. Loco goes for the old HBK flying forearm trick, but Messiah is too hulked up at the moment to put Martinez over. Crowd doesn't care...Chokeslam on Loco, only two...Loco fights back, gets a two on Messiah...semi good stuff so far. Dark Message...first fall goes to Messiah....wait what?! I missed that! Damn. Quick first fall there. Messiah takes a breather and Loco with a small cover...3 count?! Wait! Dammit! I blinked! Well, there's two falls down and oh, say another good 20 minutes to go if this match is gonna get anything out of these two young men. Hardcore rules now babay! Loco blades after Messiah messages his face into the ring post. Loco finds a street sign somewhere and...crack! crack! crack! Crowd likes it, censors cringe as Loco beats Messiah like a yellow biatch. Sorry, had to get that out....Loco takes out some toys, Messiah doesn't play well with others and beats Loco up. Bad boy...cover gets a two...we're still alive here! Loco uses the powerpunch gloves and slaps Serenity on Messiah. Normally I would want Messiah to get to the ropes, but this match just got sloppy. Messiah taps and this is, thank gawd, over with. Oh wait, Pop Perfection is next, maybe this wasn't a good idea. **1/2 stars for the blade jobs by both men.

Loco won the title, and finally hit the limelight. He recently lost the belt to Virus, ending a good 30-day reign, but won it back the following day. Sure, we all want him to hold onto the Heavyweight belt. Just about everyone here was pulling for Loco. But I don't think anyone has been dissapointed. Collins may have made a smarter descision here with Messiah, but at least Martinez has gold right now. Loco's been a good champion. An entertaining champion. He may be one of the best young faces the NYSWF has to offer at the moment. I give Loco's NA Hardcore title reign a **** rating. Keep it up man.

Peace.
