Marking Out
By Scuba Steve
So here we are. After a huge way to kick off the summer, I'm sitting at my computer, half in la la land from the week's work, but typing away nonetheless. Just so all you internet fans out there can get a peice of my mind, and bash me later about it.
So, what does one choose to write about when he's half dead? Well, how about the summer of 2001. And that will be my topic this week....
When you look at the past few weeks, a lot has really kicked off. Certain major federations have turned thier product around drastically, while others continue to flop. What I'm talking about is this new, post-apocalyptic forefront of this circuit. Within weeks, the two major faces of wrestling have seemingly risen from the ashes to take us all by the throats. And from the looks of it, neither are letting go.
First we had the suspected take over of Best's NEWF. Rumors had all been circling for weeks that a certain "Chang" was going to buy out the company and we'd see the CWA 2k1 in action. I wasn't dissapointed at all. NEWF or NPWA, we all know that no matter whose in charge there, that talent can keep us tuning in week after damn week. And now we have more reason to watch. Not just the teased sexual tension of the two owners...whereever that angle may lead into, I don't know...but because we finally are seeing some top notch stars play thier top notch games. Micheal Draven, who seemed to be tettering on the edge of 'overness' there for awhile, has finally clicked. I got nothing bad to say about this apparent fued with Wood. Both men can work a helluva program, and I got a feeling we're gonna see that come DEVine Intervention...plus, if we keep seeing the rather boneable Knight trying on lengerie (sp?), I'm all for this angle to keep going. I'm also interested in the recent interest of Hailey and Daniels again. If you remember, Sander's cost Hailey the world title match in his controversial debut. I was all set for that fued to go down, but Sander's knee injury acted up again, putting things on the back burner. More on that one later. Two top notch fueds won't exactly make this program work. But Chang and Simurda aren't idiots. They can more than get the job done. They, if anyone, can fill Best's shoes. And I'm sure the smaller programs that are working now, will get much needed attention in the coming weeks. I can see only blue skies for the NPWA.
Now, for the other giant. This is the week for the EWA. It's no secret that Gates isn't everyone's freind. The guy has more enemies than Napolean, but he won't quit. He's put together a talented staff from what I hear and he's got the returning roster of legends. Granted, the EWA may not be the shock that the NPWA delivers, but I think no one is gonna give up on it. it's a great throwback to better days. And I can't help but stir a bit when I think of the outcome of this three way dance for the world title this weekend. 3 of the most talented athletes will renew an old fued and you know it'll be a helluva match given the circumstances. Not to mention the undercard being chalked full of familliar faces who know how to put on a show. The EWA has an uphill battle to catch the NPWA in my opinion...but giving the horse power behind it, this will be a neck and neck race.
Now that leaves NYSWF. Bah. Collins made some bad management decisions, and therefore, let many key players slip through his fingers. Rated X was probably the best thing going for that federation, atop Derian Jayde and Loco Martinez. Now, with the abscence of those two factors, we got Loco to lift the fed up. The kid has really got some steam behind him. And I'm hoping to see him walk out of the tourney as a champion. Although, that may not be the smartest move by Collins. He's let others hold that belt before they were ready and it hasn't always paid off. Sean Sanders and Spiral took the title off a quick and massive response from the fans. Collins literall threw these two to the wolves by making them champions and they weren't the best title reigns. But it made them better wrestlers afterwards. Especially in Spiral's case. I think Loco is the same way. Right now, he's got a massive push from the fans, but I'd keep him in the mid-upper card. My guess is Collins will put the belt on him. He's taking more and more risks and really needs a big payoff now with the NYSWF in another spiral...but, speaking of which, I'd rather see the real Spiral with gold again. He's much more mature now, in ring wise, and fans -beleive- in him. He's credible. Collins, if there was someway/technicallity in which you could slip him into that tourney, I wouldn't waste a second thought on it.
Those are my rants, and now for one quick newsbite. Sanders is supposedly expected to return to action soon. He injured his knee in the NXWO, in case you didn't remember...and after surjery, reinjured it against Robert Orr in the Only Theatre of Pain Match. Hence the two long pauses of action in the NYSWF, all for rehab...and the shortened Hailey fued... He's doing good and is set to team with Hoffman, or it would appear after the actions on Final Countdown last week.
That's it for now. Peace
