Backstage Pass

By Ryan "Camel" Cuddihy

Don't talk to me about not having a week's worth of Backstage Passes up, because if you do, I will murder you until you die from it. If you must know, I was working out for my involvement in Malice this past weekend, because god knows I haven't wrestled in way too long, and I really didn't want to hurt myself like an asshole. That, my friends, would be both tragic and pathetic.

But here I am now, and I'm all set to bring you Backstage Pass: NYSWF Weekend, leading up to Revelations. So, without further ado...

Up All Night

From beginning to end, this was a night of surprises, to say the least. Who came away with the NA-Core title? Who would go to Revelations as #1 contender for the TV belt? Well, we'll see.

~ Here comes Scott Baio and Corey Collins, and Baio is pissed. He wants Loco now, and he'll fight him right here if he has to. The wheelchair-bound Collins is not happy with this, though... but it doesn't matter, because here comes Loco... with Potsie by his side! Tomorrow, the match goes down, Potsie and Loco vs. Corey and Baio. If you ask me, things don't look good for C&C, Chachi and Corey.

~ Jason Phoenix d. Krow. Good for him, in my opinion. Phoenix is another one of my Phoenix Triumvirate, and to say the least, he's way underrated. This guy should be climbing the card a lot higher... at least not curtain-jerking on UAN, anyway.

~ Execution d. Spyke. This one was somewhat of a squash. Spyke had very little offense through the match, and tapped out to the Vicious pretty soon after it was applied. A win for Ex is a good thing, though, considering. I am, however, disappointed with Spyke... his work ethic has really gone downhill.

~ Azazel comes out to the booth to commentate on this next match, since it DOES directly involve him in some way... the winner will go on to receive a TV Title shot at Revelations.

~ Sean Boden d. Nightmare. It's about time Boden got a win over someone of the goth persuasion in the NYSWF... first, he loses to Rune, then to a Fellowship member, Sigel Phoenix (although not goth, granted)... it's like the guy can't cut a break. This match could've been much better, though... for a man who defeated Tryst with his bare hands, to going on to being manhandled by a guy like Nightmare, and have to resort to cheating to get the win... you'd think the NYSWF wants to kill his career. Either way, though, Boden goes on to Revelations as number one contender for the TV Title.

~ Loco Martinez d. Julian Dreamwalker for the NA-Core title. A first blood match for the record books, as the saying goes. Finely wrestled, with just enough weapons to make it a good hardcore match, with just as much wrestling involved as well... a fine showing by both men, with a beautiful move by Loco, reversing a tornado DDT into a Northern Lights suplex. Fine work. The end was a little shady, though, as Cindy came out to help Loco with the win... or more to get back at Julian Dreamwalker. Obviously, Boden's war on HATE hasn't ended yet, but just cooled a little. Cindy tossed in a glass mug to shatter on Julian's face, but got nailed with a Blood Curse in the process. The things we do for love.

~ Virus shows Dark Messiah just how much time he has until his match, scrawling a 24 on the belt in blood. Virus is one of my new favorite wrestlers, and for those of you who don't know, it's for good reason. We fade out of the show on this note.

All in all, it was a mediocre show for the NYSWF. Better than others in recent times, but still pretty short. It had its good points, and it had its bad points, but what bothers me is that it didn't have many points. Perhaps it's a lack of angles, but it could've been made up for with more wrestling. Would SNH prove different?

Sunday Night Heat

An interesting show, but not all I was expecting from it... you'll see as I go on. I was a little disappointed with some of the outcomes, but hey, it could be worse... thankfully, Vince Russo is unemployed.

~ Retribution starts the show off with some harsh words for Rune Robertson. He tells Rune that "fate walks all over" him tonight.

~ The Wanderers d. Pop Perfection. I'm torn on how I feel about this match... I like Jon and Shawn as performers and as guys, but I mark out for Sigel Phoenix. Either way, an excellent match-up by both teams, and Sigel Phoenix and Azazel win it in the end. I give it **** overall.

~ Underground Evolution shows up post match, and challenges the winners to a Hellfire Death Match next week at Revelations.

~ Potsie and Loco d. Baio and Collins. I didn't expect much from this match: it has always been my philosophy that when you bring wrestlers and celebrities (even if they are out of work, washed up celebs) into the same ring to fight, you make a mockery of the sport. Well, I certainly wasn't disproved here. That, and this match actually meant something to Loco, and he was denied, because... POTSIE GOT THE PIN. I'm sorry, but I don't know how much longer I can deal with Baio and Potsie being in the NYSWF, much less in a program with Loco Martinez, who should be number one contender for the NYSWF Title, not beating on B-list celebs.

~ As the match ends, the NES Pros come out, and attack Loco and Potsie, and Corey tells Loco that since he DIDN'T pin Collins, he gets no such World Title shot. Depressing.

~ NOTHING d. Angel. OK, this match was brutal. Angel and NOTHING beat the crap out of each other with weapons until the cows came home, and NOTHING locked on the Nocturnal Submission, and it was over from there. Personally, I think Angel needs to be elevated a lot more than she has been, but this match with NOTHING will improve her status in the NYSWF... NOTHING, on the other hand, has proven himself to still be the heel, trapping Angel in the Nocturnal Submission and not letting go. Not a way to treat a lady, Pru.

~ Rune Robertson d. Retribution. A falls-count-anywhere brawl, but it could've been so much better. It was just a little too short for my tastes, but still, some sick bumps, including a DVD off of Jack's car (although I seriously doubt Jack could afford a beamer after paying for all the whores... oops! Was that out loud?). The status of either wrestler is unknown at the moment, but there's no way either of them could've gone through that without some injury... there has to be a reason that match was so short.

~ Another of Virus' commercials. I love 'em, they really drilled the point home.

~ Dark Messiah d. Virus. I officially hate Rune Robertson for this match. It was his fault Virus lost, and god dammit, that's just not fair. I really thought Virus would win this one, and I was extremely disappointed. A great match, yes, but I see Virus as a much better World Champion. There's no question he has the talent, and quite frankly, he's a more charismatic person in general. I need to lower my expectations, I think.

Another OK showing from New York, not quite back up to par, but not horrible. Collins seems to have levelled off with the level of talent and good wrestling in the NYSWF at the moment... hopefully, he can pick up the pace and use what he's got to its full potential. Now... a preview of Revelations! Hopefully, this card will be the one that finally brings the NYSWF back into the limelight it so needs and deserves.

UAN:
~ Spyke and the Krow team up against Frontline. Personally, I'll be rooting for Frontline here, because both Spyke and Krow have REALLY cut back on the workrate. Besides which, both Phoenix and Execution are better than what they're being given in the NYSWF right now, and a win over these two would send them on their way higher up the card.

~ Angel v. Nightmare. Should be an OK match, personally, I'd like to see Angel take it. I dunno, something about Nightmare just turns me off.

~ Xtreme v. Andrew Spears in a Last Man Standing match. I'm not a big fan of either of these guys. And since I am not a fan, I will watch this match for the sole reason of informing you smart people, who will miss it, just who won.

~ Dark Messiah defends the title against Krow in a Fear of Heights match. OK, this match is getting old. I really don't even think the interesting gimmick match can save it. First of all, how in the hell did Krow get ANOTHER title shot against Messiah, after losing to Jason Phoenix this week? Secondly, why is Krow, who again, jobbed to Jason Phoenix this week, getting such a push, and not Phoenix, or for that matter, guys like Storm, Spiral, Loco and Boden? Thirdly, why is this on the UAN half, when the Heavyweight Title is supposed to be the most prestigious title in any federation? Corey, this doesn't make any sense to me. Then again, who am I?

SNH:
~ Azazel defends the TV Title against Sean Boden. I expect a high workrate, but I don't expect anything more from this match. I don't really see Azazel as a worthy champion, in my opinion. Sure, he's got the TV title, but he hasn't really had any time to get out of Rune's shadow. Even as leader of the Fellowship, I haven't really seen that much out of Azazel that makes me see him as worthy of holding the belt. But again, that's my opinion.

~ Retribution and Julian Dreamwalker take on Pop Perfection. Should be an interesting match-up. Perfection have proven themselves a worthy tag team, and Dreamwalker is definitely a good performer, but I really haven't seen much out of Retribution, other than that he can take a few good bumps. We'll see how this turns out.

~ Loco Martinez defends the NA-Core title against Spiral. Now finally, a match that I would absolutely love to watch... if only it were for the World Title.

~ Underground Evolution defends the Tag titles against the new Wanderers in a Hellfire Death Match. Now, I know the HDM is brutal, but I really think it's being overused. There are a lot of brutal matches out there, but this one always seems to be the one used.

Corey Collins is promising a lot of surprises in this card, one can only hope they mean more than just another B-list celebrity showing up. There's rumors that a past superstar will be returning, but until I see it, they're still rumors.

I'll have an NPWA Backstage Pass, complete with DEVine Intervention card, for y'all tomorrow. So just deal with it. Until then...

Camel out.
