Backstage Pass
By Ryan "Camel" Cuddihy
Well, folks, this is what I've decided. This whole rigid schedule thing? The NYSWF Mondays, NPWA Wednesdays, and EWA Fridays? Ain't gonna work. I just can't help writing about these damn events the day they happen, and god help me if I should keep my work from you people for more than a day. Seriously. So, you can expect a full NYSWF report on Monday, a full NPWA report on Tuesday, and a full EWA report on Thursday, cuz dammit, I just can't help myself.
My second order of business: Chris Kanyon's shoulder is not only doing OK after his match with Marcus Hailey on NPWA's Sabotage, but he is now completely back at 100%. He goes on to face none other than the absent Matt Hoffman this week on Malice, to qualify for the Hardcore Title... and speaking of Matt Hoffman, I have also found out just why he did not appear on Sabotage, and it's attributed to lack of a plane. My sources have told me that Hoffman, who has been working in Japan while waiting for his NYSWF contract to expire, was all set to board the plane from Kyoto to Dallas for the Sabotage taping, but for undisclosed safety concerns, the flight was delayed, and Hoffman didn't make it in time for the show. But Hoffman is now in the US, and will be present at Malice this coming Monday.
And now, without further ado, let me say something about the EWA's first Wednesday Night War since closing down.
And what a War it was. If there was any doubt that the EWA would be able to come back, and come back stronger than ever, well, let's just say there isn't any doubt any more. A damn good show from start to finish... with few exceptions.
~ From the opening promo, you could see this was gonna be a great show, and with the addition of SEAN SANDERS to the announce team for the night... well, things could only get better from there. I recieved a press release (man, they know us already!) from SeanSanders.com, saying the following:
Sanders appeared as a guest announcer in the third announce spot on the EWA's first show. Since his recent scope on his right knee, a problem that has plagued him since the nxwo, he's been seeing little action in the ring. He is currently at 75%, and even though Dr. Scratchen Sniff hasn't cleared him to wrestle, you can prolly bet that Sanders will be back in that ring in two weeks, MAX! He's signed an official NPWA contract and the EWA stint was just a joint venture for him to help out the budding federation. There is no official contract signed, and sources say, "Don't expect Sean to be part of the EWA roster. He was just doing Duane a favor as a freind."
So there you have it.
~ Sigel Phoenix d. Johnny Blaze. Not a complete squash, but almost. Blaze didn't seem up to the task of performing this week, we'll see if that changes in the future... when he applies himself, Blaze has proven he can compete, as a former AWF TV champ. It's just that "when he applies himself" part... Otherwise, a great start for the rookie... OK, I'm gonna do my best to keep the in-character stuff out of my column... unless it pertains to Long Island Hardcore winning anything.
~ Phoenix Dark d. KG. Wow. This match really coulda gone either way, but the rookie took it in the end. Impressive win for the newcomer, and hopefully, just the first in a long string of them.
~ My god... Smirt is here! Well, maybe not... but he wishes the best to everyone in the EWA this time around. A classy move from the former champ.
~ Sean Boden d. Nukeman to become EWA Hardcore Champion. It seems like everyone's having plane trouble, as Lunatikk Crippler didn't make it for this match, either. However, the remaining two combatants absolutely tore the house down. Boden and Nukeman have had some epic struggles in the past, including a fight with none other than the man who showed up before the match, SmirtDogg, way back in the UCW. In the end, both men put out a terrific effort, and Sean Boden eventually overcame the odds and beat Nukeman to get his first clean win over him yet. Now, I've been following Boden's career for longer than Boden has, and I have to say he's come a long way since the Mimic. Congrats, Sean. It's a shame you're gonna have to vacate it when Tryst kills you on Monday...
After the match, Bazooka Joe made his entrance in the EWA, and a grand one at that, hitting Nuke with a Pinpuller, followed by a Gas Mask, with tacks and pins on his glove... Nuke's face got seriously beat up, but I've been told they're all pretty superficial, and that he'll be fine by the time War rolls around next week.
~ Heywood Jublome d. Rob Harris. This was just a tragedy. Rob Harris got crushed like nobody's business. For someone who's been through as much in the independents as Harris, to job him mercilessly like that was just inhumane. Eh, who am I kidding? He didn't seem too keen on working with Heywood all that much...
~ I did my pimping of this publication as much as I needed to, and oh yeah, I did an angle-type thing with Boden and Sigel Phoenix. All I can say is that it's just gonna get better from here.
~ Raven d. Triple H. Apparently, due to contractual disputes, Triple H will no longer be a part of the EWA. Them's the breaks, I guess.
~ The Golden One d. Evan Douglas. WHAT HAPPENED HERE? Evan was not up to par in this match at all... I'm awaiting word from the EWA on his condition, and his contract status... until then, all I can do is wonder.
~ President Gates made an announcement, and congratulated both Sean Boden and Nukeman on their fine performances in the Hardcore Title match-up... giving Nukeman a World Title shot in two weeks time! I'll be the first to say that Nukeman's performance was more than enough to warrant the shot, even if he didn't win the title. Now, if only all the matches on the card had this kind of workrate...
~ And now... it was time for "The Match That Never Was." Harding Cash, Erik Draven, and Jack Daniels put on quite a show for the crowd and everyone at home. After a match that went back and forth for a solid 12 minutes, Heywood Jublome continued his spree of Draven-hurting, by locking Erik in the Chronic outside the ring... at the same time, Raven took out Jack Daniels with an Even Flow DDT! Daniels was shocked to see Elektra with Raven, but it cost him the match, as CHC rolled him up for the win! An intense, ***** match-up that kept the viewer on the edge of his or her seat. One can only guess where this is heading to...
"Cold" Harding Cash d. Jack Daniels and Erik Draven to become EWA World Champion.
All in all, it was a night not to be missed. And if you missed it? You stupid idiot! What's wrong with you?! Sorry about that. Anyway, to preview next week's War:
~ The card starts off with an interview with new EWA Champ Harding Cash. I'll be listening to see what comes of this.
~ KG squares off against Rob Harris. Let's hope Harris' workrate goes up this week, cuz god knows he has the skill...
~ Joey Logan takes on the Butcher. Two rookies I know nothing about, so it's best to keep one eye on this match, and another eye on... something else, I guess.
~ In the first round of the IC Title tourney, Heywood Jublome goes up against Johnny Blaze. Will Blaze actually TRY this week? If he does, there's a very good chance he could win this thing... if he doesn't, you might as well give Jublome a bye.
~ Sigel Phoenix v. Evan Douglas. This match should be a good one, considering Evan is back on his game. I was disappointed this week, I don't want to be again.
~ The first EWA Hardcore Title defense of the year takes place as Sean Boden defends against Phoenix Dark. Well... I've seen a lot from this rookie to make me think he can defeat Boden, but at the same time, Boden showed me a lot this week against Nukeman... decisions, decisions... I'm gonna abstain from predicting the outcome of this one for now.
~ Lunatikk Crippler takes on Erik Draven. Now this match could be interesting. Both Crippler and the EWA have confirmed that he will appear this week on War. Let's hope that this match can make up for Crippler's missed debut.
~ In a special tag team match-up, Jack Daniels and Nukeman face off against Raven and Harding Cash. I don't think I need to tell ANYONE that this match is the top candidate for match of the night.
~ And in the Main Event, Bazooka Joe squares off against the Golden One, in the IC Title tourney. This one should be a classic, with TGO coming off a win against Evan Douglas, and Joe coming off a win against Evan Douglas in the NPWA... interesting, no?
And now, as promised, this week's cards in the NYSWF:
I'm not gonna preview the Academy's Training Session. I will continue to review their performances, and let you people know what's happening in the Academy, but I'd like to keep both the performers and the audience on their toes.
On Up All Night:
~ Spiral v. Spyke v. Xtreme. All three men are excellent wrestlers in their own right... however, I've heard rumors that Spiral may not be present at UAN this weekend. These rumors are not substantiated, but we'll have to wait and see.
~ Rune Robertson v. Sean Boden. The rivalry these two have had, both on and off stage, has been bitter and brutal at times. I've heard they're on a lot better terms than they were at one point, but either way, expect this match to be full of vicious spots.
~ Loco Martinez defends the NA-Core belt against Nightmare. Loco was robbed last week, in my opinion, and look for him to take it to the man who knocked him out of the title tournament.
~ In the Main Event, Azazel defends the TV belt against Virus. This will no doubt be the match of the night, as Virus is really making a name for himself in the NYSWF... not to mention his teammate is former Fellowship leader Rune Robertson. Should be an electric match-up.
And on Sunday Night Heat:
~ NOTHING v. Angel. This match will be interesting, to say the least. Angel has proven herself to be more than strong enough to play with the big boys, and has no qualms about taking huge bumps. Whether she can take out a former World Champion... well, we'll see.
~ Shawn Hunter v. Execution. This is Ex's first match back, so he may be a little rusty. However, Shawn Hunter has seemed to be losing some steam as of late as well... this one's a toss-up.
~ Jon Storm and Sigel Phoenix mix it up in non-title action. Jon's not quite officially at 100% just yet after his gruesomely short match at BJC '01, but sources say that neither is Sigel Phoenix. Phoenix, just coming off his big win at BJC, seemed to be favoring his right side in his match against Blaze yesterday. Another toss-up.
~ The Main Event gives us more non-title action as the Dark Messiah takes on the Krow. Hm... don't really know where this one is going. Messiah's shown he's got the talent, and he is a somewhat respectable champion, and the Krow has some skill as well... hm... I dunno.
Be sure to tune in to the NYSWF's weekend, this Saturday and Sunday on CBS. Tape SNH if you want to watch Sabotage, OK? Seriously.
Camel out.
