Backstage Pass

By Ryan "Camel" Cuddihy

It's not quite that time again, but since I didn't have NYSWF cards for you Monday, I'll make it up to you by sending this in nice and early, so it can get posted nice and early... so, stop the hate mail, please, it won't happen again.  And special thanks to the guy who called me a "flaming asshole" for providing me with the worst ever hate mail message, it was beyond entertaining.  On to the NPWA!

The National Pro-Wrestling Alliance debuted in grand fashion, with two cards of spectacular quality.  Of course, this was expected for the Chang/Simurda duo that brought us some of the best wrestling ever with the CWA.  So, without further ado, let's take a look at Sabotage and the first ever Malice.

Sunday Night Sabotage was the cornerstone of the CWA's programming back in its day, and now it gets new life in the NPWA.  Could it live up to the expectations that it put itself under?  Well, yes, yes it could, and then some.  Here's a short recap:

~  To kick the show off, President Chang and VP candidate Simurda came out, and continued their soap opera (fans of the CWA should know exactly what I'm talking about), finally ending up with Simurda signing on the dotted line, and taking the VP job for the astoundingly high paycheck, 1 cent.  Beautiful work from both Chang and Simurda on this one, keeping the feud alive.

~  The first match of the night... didn't happen.  Neither Q or Matt Hoffman showed up, so the match was canceled.  It doesn't surprise us that Q was delinquent, but Hoffman?  That was a shock to me, personally... I'd be curious to know why he didn't show.

~  Ray Willmott d. Christopher Yorke in an absolute '80s WWF Superstars squash.  Yorke seems to be wanting out of his contract, but we'll see whether that happens or not.

~  Michael Draven seemed to freak out Evan Douglas, telling him he'd better find another partner... cuz Jublome may not be alive tomorrow.  This feud with Jublome is going somewhere, and trust me, after I talk about Malice, you'll agree with me.  We'll save the feud commentary until then.

~  Latino Powers d. BioHazard Area.  This match just went back and forth, as BHA had and lost the momentum seven hundred gazillion times.  But in the end, the Latino Powers got the win, not without some interference by Chi Bangs.  I can't say the outcome was all that surprising, although, I must say, BHA is lucky they aren't the ones facing LIHC next week.  Yes, I did have to say that.  I'm their manager, it's my job to not be objective when it comes to them.

~  Marcus Hailey d. Chris Kanyon.  In what had to be the most anticipated match of the night, Hailey and Kanyon duked it out in Deep Ellum Live, and nearly killed each other in the process.  A ***** match, to say the least, with so many near-falls, it's frightening.  Hailey kicked out of the Flatliner, Kanyon prevented a Solitary, it was a brutal brutal match.  Kanyon may have injured his shoulder pretty bad, I'll have some news on his condition on Friday.

~  Michael Draven d. Venom for the NPWA TV Title.  If it wasn't the match of the night, it was a close second.  Michael Draven, the man who came into this match with nothing to lose, walked out with the TV Title around his waist.  An "I Quit" match for the ages, no doubt.  Both men showed their technical prowess, throwing in more submissions than I've ever seen, and it ended with Venom not tapping, but passing out completely.  Another ***** match, and fitting for the first Main Event in NPWA history.

All in all, Sabotage lived up to its reputation, and brought some top-notch wrestling... although not all the way through the card.  Memos to Q and Yorke: start working, or get off my screen.  I'm sure the NPWA brass isn't happy with you two, so unless you get your acts together... well, perhaps it's time to practice saying, "Would you like fries with that?"

The NPWA started right off with Sabotage, telling us just why the Changurda CWA run was so damn good... but could they follow it up with Malice?  One word says it all: DAMN.  A kick-ass show, to say the least.  Again, the NPWA delivered, and in grand fashion.  If they can keep this up, their ratings will go absolutely through the roof.

~  Sean Boden?  Boden is here?  God damn, I'm his best friend, and I'm the last to know?  Jesus H. Christ in a chicken basket!  Anyway, he's looking for the Dead Soul, and he hoped Angela would know where he is... instead, Chang set him up for a match with Tryst.  Sean, buddy, it's been nice knowing you.  Put in a good word for me on the other side, OK?  Seriously, now, this has the workings for a MAJOR angle for Boden, and for the rest of the NPWA... and besides, Sean's working for FREE!  Miss Chang, you can gladly pay me his salary, I won't mind.

~  OK, wait... Erik and Michael Draven have to live... TOGETHER?  Not just play nice, not just coexist in the same workplace... but LIVE TOGETHER?  Man, Patricia Draven knows how to work a will to her benefit, huh?  This angle with Jublome is going to be a serious springboard for both Michael and Erik's careers.  Yeah, I know both are already at Main Event status, and they're both contenders for the World Title, but this angle could send them into the stratosphere... they're solid workers, excellent performers, and they have something to stand behind here that they can both pull off.  Look for them in World Title matches and Main Events for weeks to come.

~  And finally, we came to the first match of the night, and it did not disappoint.  An absolutely savage hardcore battle between Craven Blood and Lunatikk Crippler, and, oh yeah, Rhino was there too.  In essence, this was a rematch of last week's upset, and it topped the Final Countdown match in all areas.  It's a scary thing when a network match tops a PPV match, but this one was definitely *****, no doubt.  Unfortunately, Craven Blood was injured during the match, and wheeled away on a stretcher...

~  Venom showed us why he's the most controversial star in wrestling today, and crashed into Chris Kanyon's car, seriously injuring his wife.  And of course, Venom doesn't care.  Now, pulling Kanyon out of the commissioner's spot is fine, but c'mon, now that he's not in authority, it doesn't mean he can be walked all over... we know the talent that Kanyon has.  This angle better go far, because it would really suck to see a talent like Kanyon wasted for stupid reasons.

~  The highlight of the show, IMO... LIHC d. Extreme Danger quite soundly.  Nobody should be shocked by this.  And in the process, they earned a Tag Title shot against Latino Powers this week.  Sweet.  I think everyone knows my feelings on LIHC, given that I manage them, but they're going up against their biggest challenge yet.  And if you don't win, guys, you owe me a week's salary.

~  OK, anyone else find the Hailey/Draven segment in there pointless?  C'mon.

~  Draven comes to, and heads outside, checking on Kanyon's wife.  Needless to say, the former Commish ain't happy.  He vows to take care of this himself.  This better be good.

~  Evan Douglas d. Bazooka Joe by DQ.  Finally, a match!  If it weren't for the DQ ending, this one would've been top notch.  Evan Douglas and Bazooka Joe pulled a great match out of this one, and nobody should be surprised.  Near-falls, finishers that failed, it had all the earmarks for an excellent tense match-up, and the DQ just didn't do it justice.  Bazooka Joe holds on to the US Title, but if you ask me, Douglas got robbed.  I'll be watching, and waiting, for Mr. Evan Douglas to finally get the belt he deserves.

~  Venom opens the door for a UPS guy, who turns out to be Kanyon!  Saw that coming, to say the least.  Kanyon said this is just starting, and slammed Venom with a steel chair.  OK, that was sorta cool, with the whole "eye for an eye" thing, but please tell me the next time something like this happens, it's not gonna remind me of a Wily Coyote cartoon.

~  Erik Draven and Heywood Jublome fight to a draw.  I'm still confused by the ending of that match... both men were pinned?  How the hell does that work?  Eh, whatever.  Otherwise the match was at least a ****, with power moves galore, although it's obvious Draven's still hurting from his past injuries.  But what made this match great had nothing to do with the actual match: Michael Draven came out to fulfill his promise of the great equalizer he said he'd bring... and DAMN! there wasn't anyone who expected this... well, we all saw his return coming, but we certainly didn't see it coming NOW.  That's right, I'm talkin' bout Smirt (then we can dig it).  He came back, and joined the fray with Draven and Draven against Heywood, a former friend.  I think we all recall just what happened between them the last time we saw Kelvin Hailey.  The feud just got hotter.

~  Lithium and Chang are talking about Sean Boden's imminent death (seriously, can I have your stereo?  I blew mine out last week), and are greeted with the not-so-good news that Craven Blood may be dead.  We've seen people come back from the dead before in wrestling, and I hope to heaven that this is just another one of those cases.  If not, the wrestling world has lost one of its best.

~  Grady Smith d. Jack Daniels, with some help from Marcus Hailey.  This was another excellent match-up, I'd expect no less from these two.  Another screwy ending, though.  I can deal with it, as long as it doesn't happen at a PPV, but 3 questionable endings in one night is a bit much for me.  Anyway, on to the match.  It didn't quite match up with the PPV match, but it's network, so that's almost expected.  Either way, Daniels and Smith put on a damn good show.  The DFR/Armageddon feud continues.  Great work to both men, for a match well done.

I think you can tell that I'm pretty happy with the NPWA's debut weekend.  All in all, even with the screwjobs and the odd angles, the weekend kicked seven types of ass, and possibly even a heretofore unknown eighth type of ass.  A preview of next week's cards?  You got it!

Sabotage:
~  Q takes on Azmyth.  Rumor has it this may just be Q's last match in the NPWA.  I for one won't be too upset.

~  DJ Deadly v. Paladin.  DJ Deadly's shown me a bit in the NYSWF's Academy, although I haven't heard a whole lot about Paladin.  One to watch, for sure.

~  SmirtDogg and Michael Draven face off against Ray Willmott and Heywood Jublome.  If you watch any match on Sunday, make it this one.  All four men are electric in the ring, and this should be no different... and it'd be interesting to see how Smirt performs in his first match back.

~  LIHC v. Latino Powers.  LIHC will viciously take the Mexicans to within an inch of their lives, and win the belts.  Well, I'm a little biased.

~  Venom goes up against Jack Daniels in a Baseball Bat match.  Should prove to be bloodier than anything we've ever seen.  I like that.

And on Malice:
~  Rhino v. Phoenix Dark.  Another one that may be in their last match, Rhino can put over Dark in his last NPWA appearance.  If he doesn't, I'll be supremely pissed, cuz Dark deserves it, no question.

~  Extreme Danger v. BioHazard Area.  Yawn.

~  Sean Boden takes on Tryst in a No-holds-barred match in Deep Ellum.  So... should your epitaph be something like... "I was a schizophrenic, but we're all better now?"

~  Matt Hoffman makes his REAL debut against Chris Kanyon, in a hardcore match to qualify for the Hardcore Title.  This one should be good, but I apologize if I want Kanyon to win... just to get him up where he belongs.  Mind you, Hoffman belongs high up, but Kanyon needs it more, IMO.

~  Marcus Hailey v. Bazooka Joe.  After his match with Douglas, Joe should put on another top-notch match with Hailey, and let's hope it ends fairly, now that the title's not on the line.

~  The Lethal Lottery semi-finals continue as Erik Draven and Grady Smith take on Lunatikk Crippler and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.  It'll be nice to see Johnny back in action, and this Main Event is sure to please, no doubt.

I was gonna put the NYSWF cards here, too, but I'm running out of space.  I'll throw them up after my EWA report on Friday.

Camel out.
