Backstage Pass

By Ryan "Camel" Cuddihy

Yes, it's that time again... time for what, you say? Sweeps time, of course. You haven't noticed the increase in competition, the better matches, the increased tension between the NYSWF and the EWA? Why do you think it's happening now? Of course, it's ratings sweeps time. The time of year when young man's fancy turns to Nielsen. The NYSWF has pulled all the stops, finally throwing Sean Boden into the Main Event of Sunday Night Heat for I think only the third time in his career, along with giving Spiral back the NA-Core title, and pushing all the right young talent (namely, Virus). And Corey Collins has even gone so far as to show up at EWA's Clash of the Champions, with a ringside ticket. Is this a ratings ploy for both federations? According to EWA President Duane Gates, no.

I got an official comment on the situation from President Gates. When asked about the current situation between the rival federations, Gates said, "There is no situation between the two federations. The EWA is a mile above the NYSWF, and everyone in the wrestling business knows it." Along the same token, Gates did not speak too highly of the CEO and President of the NYSWF, Corey Collins. "Corey Collins is a piece of shit. He's a leech. He knows his federation is going under, due to the fact that he's alienated just about every professional wrestler in the business. So what does he do? He comes on to my show, looking for cheap publicity. Well, he got it...and just wait until Wednesday night on War...I've got a few things to say to President Prickface." If Corey was looking for publicity with his recent stunt, he got it... and as the saying goes, no publicity is bad publicity. It's certainly spiked him in the ratings, as people tuned in just to see what the hell Corey was thinking.

And the NYSWF President didn't disappoint... OK, that's pushing it, he disappointed in that he never gave us a rationale for showing up on EWA television, but he didn't disappoint in that he gave us a SOLID show that is THE mark of the upturn of NYSWF programming to the behemoth it was just 6 months ago. Without further ado, let's recap the NYSWF Weekend.

Up All Night... only word I can think of is "remarkable." It really showed that Corey didn't lose all the potential he had, but has started to realize the potential that he does have with the current talent roster. He's starting to "get it," so to speak, and it definitely showed with this show.

~ Starting right off, Corey Collins had a few things to say... but the important part of this is that Collins is ON HIS FEET. That's right, NYSWF President Corey Collins is no longer in a wheelchair. Collins comes out, commends Virus for his work, as well he should, and Rune Robertson interrupts him. So, Runey decides that he wants Virus in the ring. Corey complies, saying that Virus and Rune will duke it out for number one contendership to the World Title at Immaculate Deconstruction, but there's a catch (isn't there always?)... Rune and Virus can't TOUCH each other until then! Rune is livid, but he swears that Virus will get what's coming to him...

~ Spyke d. Krow. Short match, not quite a squash, but not exactly top notch material... although I don't expect that out of a Krow match. His workrate has gone WAY downhill in recent weeks... Krow's got a case of the Kevin Nash syndrome, apparently... after being pushed so early on, he doesn't feel like he has to work. News flash: start working, or start packing.

~ Azazel and Ron Sonic have a little chat about life, HATE, and scum. Azazel basically told Ron what Ron wanted to hear: the Fellowship is gonna start cleaning up the federation, they're happy to have the tag titles, you know, the basic "I'm doing an interview segment, I'm gonna be self-promoting" schtick. But hey, it worked, and it filled up airtime.

~ Rune Robertson approaches Shawn Hunter to beat up Virus for him. Needless to say, Shawn doesn't really want to be associated with Rune, considering what happened to the other guys who've partnered with him.

~ Execution d. Loco Martinez. OK match, and an upset win, but Loco didn't seem like hismelf in there. His ring skill was just fine, but his natural charisma just didn't show through in the ring Saturday. Execution picks up the win, which is fine in my book, but something seems to be off with Loco, ever since losing the title last week. Collins should have a little developmental talk with Martinez, see where he's headed in the fed (which, hopefully, is high).

~ Spiral comes out, to discuss the man who challenged him on NYSWF TV this week, Andrew Spears. Spears is getting himself into something very bad... Spiral's not exactly the man you want to be challenging, and if his match against Loco didn't prove that, then nothing can.

~ Andrew Spears converses with a mystery man, apparently the same one who took out Xtreme last week. I'd like to see him unmask soon, because, quite frankly, mystery men are annoying after a while.

~ Angel, Cindy, and Julian Dreamwalker end in a no contest, thanks to interference from NOTHING. Word is that Cindy may have been injured in her last match with Twizted, and really wasn't in any real condition to be competing, and that Angel was also not quite up to competition level, so the match was basically scrapped for the time being. I hope to see a rematch of sorts at some future time.

~ Ashlee Collins bumps into Dark Messiah and spills some coffee on him. Other than that, I don't see what the point of this was.

~ Rune confronts Execution about partnering up with him. Execution tells him to screw off. Completely expected, but truthful.

~ NOTHING d. Azazel for the NYSWF Television Championship. An excellent match from both men, who both cut very creative promos during the week, and in the end, Azazel tapped to the Nocturnal Submission. NOTHING's new finisher has claimed countless victims now, but one man has escaped... Ramon Marteen. I wonder what's going on with that angle.

If you thought UAN was good, SNH was better. Trust me.

~ Duane Gates shows up on NYSWF Television... my guess is that it's just to get back at Corey for the EWA happenings. But I have no idea, to tell you the truth.

~ Rune Robertson arrogantly asks Sean Boden to be his partner, as he has all Saturday night... and Boden just spits in his face! Let me just say that I applauded at this scene.

~ Jason Phoenix d. Twizted. No shocker there... I'm really wondering what the NYSWF was thinking in hiring Twizted... his workrate is horrible, and he lacks charisma... are they paying him in pretzel nuggets?

~ Corey Collins doesn't seem to care that Duane Gates is in the audience... but why should he? His biggest competitor just paid 80 bucks to get into one of his shows. Baio has Todd Williams go down to ringside anyway.

~ Andrew Spears and mystery man have another conversation. If the mystery man is NOT revealed next week, I'm going to come down there, and personally beat on Andrew Spears and whoever the mystery man is.

~ Rune Robertson says there's gonna be a change. Now, lemme just say something to Rune: Sean Boden said there was gonna be a change for a year and a half before the change actually happened. Keep that in mind.

~ Retribution d. Shawn Hunter. Don't ask me how, but he did it, and pulled off an excellent match, to boot. Keep an eye on Retribution... he just might be someone who could go far in the NYSWF.

~ Duane Gates walks out without talking to Todd. I do wish he'd have said something, but I guess that would just be wierd.

~ Virus does a little commercial for Rune. I love these things... and this one prompted one of the funniest Carson/Jack exchanges in recent months.

~ Spiral d. Rune Robertson. A five-star hardcore match. I expected no less from these two, and they delivered, I'll tell you that. Good to see that the NA-Core champ took this one, though.

~ Andrew Spears comes out to make a fool of himself in front of Spiral again... Andrew, let me make this clear: you don't challenge Spiral. It's a seriously stupid idea. I should know, I've both faced and tagged with him. He's a dangerous man, and I'm not talking in character. He is truly everything he says he is on television. Back out, now, trust me.

~ Collins, on advice from the increasingly intelligent Scott Baio, changes the name of the PPV to Immaculate Deception. Has a better ring to it, in my opinion. And then he treats Baio to a sandwich. Watch out, Scott, it'll probably come out of your paycheck.

~ Andrew Spears recites a poem for Jon Storm. I hate bad poetry. Andrew, Boden's promo on Raven in the EWA... that's good poetry. Yours... that's bad poetry. I hate bad poetry. But I guess that's what Spears is trying to do.

~ Jon Storm d. Andrew Spears. That's what you get for using bad poetry. A good match, either way, and it showed that Spears is starting to come into his own here.

~ Sean Boden d. Sigel Phoenix to become Number One Contender to the NYSWF World Title, with some help from Spiral. An excellent rematch from start to almost finish. While Spiral didn't necessarily cost Sigel the match, he certainly made it a definite finish. Spiral then cut a promo telling Boden that he was going to make sure Boden won the title... so that he could take it from him, and cost him what Boden cost Spiral. Now THAT would be a match for the ages, it would...

If anything, SNH was a huge surprise for those who thought the NYSWF couldn't come back from it's dismal state. It's definitely on the rebound, and if last weekend's shows didn't tell you that, this weekend's will. Shall we?

UAN:
~ Twizted takes on Angel. Should be a lopsided affair.

~ Cindy faces off with Spyke. After Spyke's performance last week, as opposed to Cindy's, this one could be a toss up. I will enjoy watching it, though.

~ Jon Storm defends his Lightweight Title against Jason Phoenix. Should be a hell of a match, I see Phoenix just eeking it out for the win.

~ In the Main Event, Spiral defends the NA-Core belt against Execution. As much as I like Execution, and as much as I think he deserves a title, it's not this one. Spiral not only deserves to retain, he absolutely should. It's the title that truly speaks for Spiral.

SNH:
~ Nightmare goes up against Shawn Hunter. I don't really know where to go with this match. Hmm...

~ Rune Robertson faces Andrew Spears. I'll enjoy this match, if only because I get to see one beat on the other. Either way.

~ HATE v. Retribution and the Wanderers. This should be an interesting match up... Retribution has been kicking ass as of late, and the new Wanderers are certainly making a name for themselves, but with Virus, HATE could be unstoppable.

~ In the Main Event, Dark Messiah defends his NYSWF Title against Sean Boden. I really didn't see this coming... not this soon, anyway. I commend Corey for booking this match so soon after Boden earned his shot.

That's it for this week, see ya on Friday for a recap of EWA Wednesday Night War and Thursday Night Thunder.

Camel out.
