Backstage Pass
By Ryan "Camel" Cuddihy
I'm sorry I didn't have this up on Monday, as promised... but this weekend was pretty traumatic. Just take a look at the Dirtsheet front page... put me out of a job temporarily. And it's really odd not doing a Backstage Pass for the NPWA anymore. But hey, me, CJ and Jared are now employed by the EWA, so it's all good. God rest the soul of the NPWA.
And now, the NYSWF Revelations weekend... and it was a good weekend for the NYSWF, the start of what could be a huge turnaround for the veteran company. More like this, and we could be seeing a huge surge in viewership.
Let's start with UAN's half of Revelations. It saw careers end, and others change for the better, others for the worse. Let's go over this, shall we?
~ Jon Storm comes out to new music, and he makes quite a statement: the NYSWF has really gone downhill since they last were in Newcastle! Jon Storm, badmouthing the company? What's going on? He then comes out and challenges ANY title holder, and finally makes the claim that Shawn Hunter has been doing a sub-par job! Could we be seeing the end of Pop Perfection? I think that may be the case.
~ Corey Collins speaks with a lawyer, who tells him he MUST give Loco Martinez his World Title shot after the match last week! Scott Baio has a plan, but will it be enough? We'll find out. As for Loco, he's dancing around for sure. It's about time.
~ Frontline d. Spyke and Krow. This didn't really surprise me, but it was finally the match that the Frontline needed to bring their status up. Frontline's a good tag team, but they need a couple of wins under their belt before we can take them seriously.
~ Nightmare and Dark Messiah join up in the Unholy Alliance. Well, that means one of two things in the long run: they're taking the strap off of Dark Messiah, or these two are never gonna grab the tag titles.
~ Nightmare d. Angel. Personally, I think Angel has a lot of talent, and just needs to step up her game... but Nightmare has showed a lot of skill in the past couple of weeks.
~ Andrew Spears d. Xtreme, in a Last Man Standing career match. No more Xtreme in the NYSWF... personally, I'm not crying. Andrew Spears, on the other hand, may just start to get a push.
~ NOTHING locks Lennox Lewis in the Nocturnal Submission, but after letting it off, Lewis cold-cocked him, and NOTHING went right down, unconscious. As Nelson Muntz would say, "Ha ha!"
~ Dark Messiah d. Krow in the Fear of Heights match. Not a bad match, but not a super one, either. Messiah ended up with the win, and the boy they fought over got tossed off the scaffold and into the announce table. That's just not right.
Overall, UAN was decent. Not the best ever, but it's certainly not ICE and Kage playing Connect Four for any titles. Hopefully, SNH would prove better, and I do believe it did.
~ Somebody starts off the show watching "You've Got Mail," right off the bat proving that they're somehow mentally unbalanced.
~ Corey Collins comes out to announce the new Pay Per View, Immaculate Deconstruction. And the main event? Loco Martinez and Jon Storm get their World Title shots against Messiah! Well, this oughta be a good one.
~ Azazel d. Sean Boden for the TV Title. Damn! Sean Boden tapped out?! Az... I suddenly have a newfound respect for you. Good match, but a little too short for a supercard setting, in my opinion.
~ Cindy d. Twizted. Good debut from Cindy, I never really got to see what kind of skill she had inside the ring, but from the Julian/Loco match a couple weeks ago, we knew she could take some sick bumps. Now I know she's got some talent... watch for her to take the NYSWF halfway by surprise.
~ NOTHING comes out, and slanders Lennox Lewis a little bit, basically saying he took a dive yesterday and stayed down. And if you believe that, I got a bridge in Brooklyn, prime property, I'll sell it to ya for 600 bucks. Anyway, he lays out another challenge to the Nocturnal Submission, and who comes out but "Pretty Boy" Ramon Marteen! I don't think there's a person alive who saw THAT coming! There was talk of a return that would shock the world, but there wasn't anyone who thought Ramon Marteen would return to the NYSWF. Also, nobody saw him escaping the Nocturnal Submission not once, not twice, but THREE times. NOTHING felt SO PRETTY after that encounter, if he didn't feel the lump on his head.
~ Retribution and Julian Dreamwalker d. Pop Perfection. Shawn Hunter hits Jon Storm with a Sweet Spot, and the Pop Perfection gets a loss. All they need now is a barbershop window. Where's Ed Leslie when ya need him? Oh yeah, unemployed. Good.
~ Shawn Hunter tells the world that Pop Perfection is over... that Sweet Spot was AIMED for Jon. In other words, he tells us exactly what we knew.
~ The Unholy Alliance challenges the Wanderers. Odd... what the hell is up Nightmare's ass? First of all, he's out of his mind if he thinks his new tag team has what it takes, and second, they're on the same team. What's up with this? Eh, whatever.
~ Spiral d. Loco Martinez for the NA-Core Title. Let me just say this: YES! Spiral is back, folks, and he's back in a big way. I missed this Spiral, the assured Spiral, the one who knew what he was doing in that ring... and apparently, so did the fans. Congrats to the Brit, winning the belt in his home country, and congrats to Loco Martinez, for making the inaugural NA-Core Title reign a memorable one.
~ Who was watching "You've Got Mail?" Dark Messiah. See? I was right.
~ The Wanderers d. Underground Evolution in the Hellfire Death match for the NYSWF Tag Team Titles! What a night for Rune Robertson! I wouldn't go what through he went through for ANY amount of money. After costing himself the belts, he gets taken down by HATE! The Fellowship comes out to help... or just to get their members out of the ring! Rune looks to Az for help... not gonna happen! Virus is getting up, and he nails Rune with an Anthrax! Virus has joined HATE, and I couldn't be happier!
SNH definitely made a better impression on me than UAN, and that's good. The NYSWF is definitely on an upswing, and if that card didn't tell you, perhaps this week's cards will.
UAN:
~ Spyke and the Krow break off their friendship after losing to the Frontline, and they face off in the first match on UAN this week. I see the Krow taking this one.
~ Loco Martinez and Execution go at it. This should be a good match, and Execution needs to show how he can do against bigger and better competition.
~ Angel, Cindy, and Julian Dreamwalker face off for the Lightweight Title number one contender. Heh... three women in one match. Just kidding, Julian. Seriously, though, I gotta give this one to Angel in the long run.
~ In the Main Event, Azazel puts his TV Title on the line against NOTHING. Either way you look at it, this one should be a tight match-up. Azazel has proven himself to be better than the average wrassler, and he's facing a former World Champion in NOTHING.
SNH:
~ Twizted and Jason Phoenix open up Sunday's show. Phoenix needs better competition than this, in my opinion. Twizted isn't horrible, but he's definitely not in the top 10 of the company.
~ Shawn Hunter goes up against Retribution. Let's see what comes of this after Retribution's defeat of Pop Perfection last Sunday... the night Perfection broke up. I see a swerve coming.
~ Spiral and Rune Robertson get it on in a no rules Hardcore match... non-title. Rune really can't cut a break this week.
~ Jonathan Storm faces Andrew Spears, but not for the Lightweight Title. This match could be a preview of things to come with Storm, and with Spears. One to watch, definitely.
~ And the Main Event... Sean Boden vs. Sigel Phoenix for Number One Contender to the World Title. If this doesn't show that Corey's seeing what the fans want, I don't know what is. As for the match itself, if you saw the EWA Hardcore Title match on Wednesday... well, then you know what these guys can do. This is definitely a Main Event material match. I can't wait.
There you have it, folks... the NYSWF doing some surprising things this weekend, and I couldn't be happier. I just hope it keeps up. This should be excellent.
I'll be back late tonight/early tomorrow with the EWA Clash of the Champions Backstage Pass. And that one should be a doozy.
Camel out.
