| Mississippian Aged St. Louis chert outcrops in the Mississippi River bluffs near Alton, Illinois (William 1975) and in western Monroe county, Illinois. Color varies in St. Louis chert from light grey to blue to black. St. Louis chert also varies widely in texture from course to fine grained. This chert is found as nodules and in bedded formations within the bluffs. (Morrow 1988). | ||||||||||||||||||||||
