Our Ski Adventure

| In
February, Barb and I made the trek to one of the great places to ski in
the United States. We flew from Bloomington airport to Denver
Colorado and took a van to Winter Park ski
resort. This was Barb's first
trip to Colorado so it was an adventure for her and she was somewhat
apprehensive being relatively new to skiing. As it was my third
skiing trip to the Rocky Mountain State, I was excited too as I knew
what to expect. Winter Park is the home of the Mary Jane mogul
run. One of the best know bump runs in the country. However,
I was also interested in skiing the run called Drunken Frenchman.
A good friend of mine told me this was the run that convinced him that
he was never going to be a better skier than he was at that moment!
We stayed at a nice hotel, directly across US 40 from Winter Park resort, called appropriately enough, Winter Park Mountain Lodge. The hotel even had its own micro-brewery built right inside. There was a marvelous view of the slopes from the restaurant, Moffit, located in the hotel. Buses ran every half hour to take you to the slopes or anywhere in the town of Winter Park, about two miles distant to the town of Frasier another mile or so down the highway. The weather was terrific, with daytime temperatures around 30° and lower twenties at night. Day one of skiing brought almost cloudless skies, very little wind and standing in the sun, it must have been 55 or 60 ! Words pale when endeavoring to describe the stunning beauty and majesty of the mountains covered in snow. Blue skies melted into all of the surrounding peaks. The sun, warm and friendly was brilliant overhead, beckoning me to point my skis down the mountain. In case my words do not betray my love of skiing, let me assure you of that fact. Over the years I have tried to inform others, especially those people here in "Flat Land" of the excitement and sheer fun derived from the alpine ski experience. Is there some work involved? You bet! Think about that as you scarf down that last piece of pizza. Good clean out-door fun. Great for your balance and overall body conditioning. For those people who worry about the cold, well...Skiing is not a cold weather sport! Much of the time, getting too hot is more of a problem. Of course time and money and location dictate that most of my ski trips will be in the mid-West. Northern Illinois and central Wisconsin receive the bulk of my ski trips. Ski resorts in this part of the country do not have the great wide open spaces and multi-mile long run, the skiing, like life, is what you make it.
