If you don't know Visual Kei, you don't know a thing. I'm not even going to get into the technicals about what kind of music it is and the kind of styles there are. The simplest explaination of Visual Kei is that it'a a form of Japanese Rock music where the men/performers dress up. In most cases it's men, dressed up in womens clothing.
These days a lot of Visual Kei is associated with EGL and Gothic styles, but it's origins were always so. Shock value is obviously a very big part of visual kei. The music styles range from Heavy Metal to Pop to Punk to Chamber Music to something that even sounds like Dance-Rock (?). It depends on the band.
A lot of people tend to think this is a gay thing, it's not. I emphasize SHOCK VALUE!! There is a big focus on androgyny and beautiful men. This isn't some cheap two-bit Mansonization (which manson bites off Jrockers anyway). Much of the Visual rockers do dress up as women, not grotesquely, and not always homosexually. It is something beautiful. Seriously, MOST of these guys could pass for women, and that is what the main attraction of Visual Kei is: BEAUTIFUL MEN WHO LOOK LIKE WOMEN WHO GIVE FANSERVICE TO RABID FANGIRLS!!
And Vis-kei fans shouldn't shit me about "it's all about the music". yea, the music is GREAT! I love Dir en grey, I love LAREINE, and I definately love Moi Dix Mois, but we all know this genre stems from it's creative and beautiful men adorned in beautiful EGL/EGA, Japonism, PVC outfits, as well as the grotesque punked out ones. To top that off, we all hear the complaints about how a band is "selling out" once they drop that beautiful woman-esque look called 'visual-ness'.
