When mating or breeding two Bettas, you want to pick the right pair. The best pair to pick are two Bettas that are alike. (In color size, etc.) You want to keep the two Bettas sperated for a little while before mating them. It's recommended to feed them live food before mating takes place. After a few days have pasted put the two cages they're in next to each other or put them in a cage that has a clear divider in the middle. You want the two bettas to be as close as possible, but seperated making sure they can see each other. If the female shows different or strange behavior, then this means she wants to mate. The male problely will act different two. Get a large fish tank ready for the two.(about 10 gallons) Set it up with a thermometer and heater, so you can maintain a constant temperature of 80 to 82 degrees fahrenheit. The male will need to build the bubble nest. (This is where the baby Bettas, known as Fry, will go after the eggs have hatched) Putting a plastic cup, or something similar, would be a good source to use for the male to make his bubble nest. Cut the cup in half from top to bottom. You will only need one of the halfs. Take it and have it float on the water.(It should be placed in the water, so that it forms a canopy over the water) Attached it to any side of the tank, so it will not float away by taping it. After this is done, put the two together in the large tank. They may start to fight, but this is normal. (If the fish show signs of bleeding or injury, then separate them) The two Bettas should start to warp around each other. Eggs should start to fall after a few minutes. The male will bring them to the nest. The mating is complete. You can separate the two, leaving the male in the tank to take care of the Fry.
Taking care of the Fry can be diffcult. The male will help care for them at the start, but you will have to do most of the work. Feed the Fry small food and clean the tank reguarly. You can buy a tool at your local pet store that can be used to remove fry from a tank when you clean it.. You want as little bacteria in the tank as possible. They are little and they can be killed quickly by bacteria.
Note: (If any bettas are injuried during the mating process, you should buy a healing supplyment at your local pet store to restore your bettas health)
This will take a lot of experience and patience for it to work.
I will soon post a diagram, so you can follow a visual step procedure. |
