| So far Bermuda has been a huge melting pot of many different cultures and backgrounds. That said, everyone here speaks English, and 95% speak English as a first language, yet there is so much I don't understand. Just to give you a taste of what its like being confused in your native tounge, I'll put a few of the funny, PG-13 rated sayings down below. Let me know if I've mis-translated any of these, or if you have additional sayings to add. Weird English Languages: USA Translation: "I will, yeah" No. "Howyooou" (yes, one word and Lazy, I mean Bermudian, way of asking "how are you have to hear it to understand) you?" Keep in mind no response is expected. "Dee" The "Herrr" Here "Therrr" There "I'll give you the bobs" I'll pay you later "Are you taking the piss?" Are you kidding? "Dodgy" Shady or Sketchy "Gaff" House "Flat" Apartment "Langer" Jerk "Touke" Stocking Cap "Punter" Dork "Yer Man" Anyone in the story that the storyteller doesn't know personally "Tinker" Thief Who spoke first, Bermudians or Nelly? As you listen to Bermudians speak, they say "herrrr" "therrrr" etc just like Nelly and Chingy made it popular a couple years ago. Something tells me that when even the older folks on the island talk that way, Bermuda beat them to the punch. |
