Miss Emily Banks
Miss Emily Banks, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Banks, though but eighteen years of age, has been in society for some time.

Born into a wealthy household in the heart of London, she spent much of her childhood in India, where she received an excellent education. India instilled in her a love of adventure and of colour and a need for freedom, but her time there prevented her from forming a close relationship with her parents. Though still relatively young when she returned to England, she could not imagine her true home to be anywhere but India and rejected her parents as strangers.

She could not be said to be greatly accomplished in the areas which most young ladies are: She has neither the patience nor the temperament for learning the pianoforte and detests all forms of embroidery and sewing, or indeed anything at which she must sit still. She has no desire to marry and though has been talked of within society as a great beauty, finds the attentions of men irritating, and at times makes her feel deeply uncomfortable. She has an extremely short temper and is critical of almost everyone and everything. Outwardly she appears to be cool and aloof, but below the surface her emotions run to extremes, which, if stirred, result in violent outbursts. She would rather feel miserable than feel nothing at all.

Her dislike of people in general puzzles her parents greatly but her aunt firmly believes that it was the fact that she did not form any sort of bond with her mother or father which prevents her from doing so with others. This, however, has been disproved on many occasions, (she had a great many friends in India and on returning to London struck up a very close friendship with Richard Bisouly).

Painting is one of her greatest passions - which she indulges in as often as is possible - but rejects still life and English landscapes in favour of her memories of India. No less, is her love of books and she devours all that she can find.

She may seem to some to be a tiger but with those she loves and trusts becomes of a gentle, friendly and devoted disposition.
