76 years old.  Dorthea Nelly was born the sixth child in a family of eight.  Her father was a coal miner, and her mother was a washerwoman.  They lived in utter poverty in London town, and by the time she was three, four of her siblings had died, including the two youngest children, one of which was an infant.  Dorthea was never educated like many children of her class, and never expected to rise above her station.  At sixteen, she married Matthias Carrington, a lower-class

laborer, and they soon had several children.  Dorthea went to work as a cleaning lady for middle-class society.  Two of her children became  sailors, one went to work in the coalmines like her father, and two others were accepted as clerks for law firms, and another, Dennis, became a burglar and was later caught and hanged.  Dennis� death broke her heart, and when Matthias died several years later when he was killed in a machine accident, Dorthea became deeply depressed.  She never fully recovered from the deaths, and went to work as a governess for a rich.
