Like her mother, Alice is tenderhearted, although she is fiercely independent and strong-willed, but very aware of her obligations and responsibilities to her father and to her family. She spent her childhood summers with her family and the Bradleys, namely Jonathan Bradley, as well as a youth by the name of John Carrington, a friend of the Bagleys and an apprentice of Mrs. Bagley's cruel brother, Daniel Harthorne. As they grew older, Jonathan, John and Alice, all grew distant as they came into their own lives and became busier. Alice occupied herself by traveling, reading, and riding which was her favorite pastime. During that time she became engaged to a man, but later broke off the engagement after both parties agreed that they did not love each other. |
