Activity 7 – SOW IT AND GROW IT !
Foresta 2000, BirdLife’s millennium afforestation project, is well under way after a summer of habitat management work. Over a thousand trees have already been planted at the site known as
It-Taflija, but there is place for many more! This
winter we need your help in growing more seedlings. When the project is
finished, the new forest will be home to hundreds of thousands of Mediterranean
trees and shrubs.
Action...
- Inform the DW co-ordinator that you intend to take part in this activity, and decide how many seeds you will need. Calculate a minimum of two seeds per participating pupil. Call before mid-December or you will miss seed-collecting time! BirdLife volunteers will be collecting holm oak seeds in late December and early January. In January/February the seeds will be delivered to your school and you can start sowing.
- Encourage children to look after their own pot. Get
them to label and personalise their pots.
- During the second half of May, call BirdLife to come and collect from your school any seedlings which have sprouted. The young oaks will be taken to BirdLife's nurseries, where we will continue to grow them until they are old enough to be planted on the new forest site. Please do not call after May.
- You get points even if literally nothing sprouts! But do take pictures of your nursery (preferably with kids involved) and send them with the Feedback Form.
Points...
Activity = 50 point
Every sprouted seedling = 5 points
