Activity 5 – ON RESERVE
There’s nothing like direct contact with nature to get children to love and respect it. BirdLife offers you this experience at Ghadira nature reserve, a wetland oasis which hosts wild birds and other local wildlife that changes with the seasons.
Action...
Call BirdLife to book your class for a visit. Do this well in advance as the nature reserve is popular with schools and days rapidly fill up.
- Before your visit, make sure that the class is aware that the outing will be an educational experience, not a picnic. Remember that most children associate the name "Ghadira" with beach and splashing about. So please see that your group is in the right frame of mind - it is important to avoid disturbance at the nature reserve. Ghadira is first and foremost a refuge for nature, a home for many forms of Maltese wildlife, not least eight species of breeding birds.
- Encourage the children to take along camera and binoculars if they have any, plus notebook. Do use this activity to get the kids to join BirdLife’s junior club
- Send in your Feedback Form. Photographs are not required for proof, but we’d love to receive some just the same - we could use them in future publications.
More if you like...
- As follow up to your visit, create a chart or leaflet about your experience at the reserve. More details were mailed to your school earlier in October. Please ask your Head or the BirdLife delegate in your school.
