RESUME - Video Production
currently sought position: Video
I have recently finished a 6 month certificate program in Video Production
at the Educational Options Campus in Riverside. I have also done what
I can to find out as much as I can about the video and movie production
field utilizing trade shows & magazines, internet sources and seminars
on the new DV technology and the web.
I am a professional graphic designer with 14+ years experience in a
self employed capacity. My weapon of choice is the macintosh G4 equipped
with FCP, but I can also work a PC (all NLEs are basically the same)
and I use primarily the Adobe stuff (photoshop, illustrator, after effects,
premier) and the macromedia stuff (flash, dreamweaver). I am hoping
to get more stick time with maya for OSX, and maybe bryce from corel.
The computer stuff is nice, but I also like the actual shoot. I can
back up the director and DP while on the set (grip, continuity or whatever)
and because I've been an artist guy (not artiste) since I was 5 years
old, I can also do storyboards and write scripts, treatments, and production
proposals. My current subjects of scriptwriting lean more towards the
entertainment content side, but I can also create journalistic documentary
stuff and PSAs.
I am now seeking a starter position with a higher-end private production
company. There I hope to work with other video professionals on more
advanced equipment than I currently have access to.

comments:
Though Hollywood is steeped in tradition regarding film vs. video, the
lure of less expensive content creation and special effects will I think
continue to change most producers over to DV. Currently the show Titus
on Fox is shot entirely in DV on Sony equipment and the special effects
they can bring to a sitcom like this are truly impressive. (they did
this one shot where the talent was actually merged with the background.)
The problem is, with all the technology behind special effects, Hollywood
seems to be missing the point. The story being told is the primary concern,
not the special effects eye candy. I still grind my teeth when I think
of what was done with the Lord of the Rings (picture broccoli dropping
into an anthill).
After much thought about my position
in this, I have decided that though I use some pretty complicated equipment
and software, I am at heart a creative and not a techie. I have an appreciation
of the design principles and use of color in classic rennaissance and
dutch masters paintings, and I like to apply these same design principles
to blocking the perfect shot.
Don't get me wrong, I still know the primary objective is get the footage
for the least expense in time and money, but these principals can be
applied usually without any additional time other than a shift in camera
placement or tripod head adjustment. Camera movement is also a good
way to augment visual interest in the shot, and the time spent setting
up dolly track and jibs can be cost prohibitive, but still worthwhile.
Its up to the producer to decide.
Sometimes the intended look can be reached without substantially affecting
the bottom line, and after all is said and done the end result, I hope,
is increased production value.
