Christmas in England

Mr  Jones has invited Pedro to dinner. He is now asking the questions he planned before.

Pedro: How do you feel about Christmas?
Mrs Jones: For me it means a lot of work, a lot of shopping but it’s something I always look forward to.
David: ( 7 years old )I like Christmas very much. I’m on holiday and I get a lot of presents.
Rose: (12 years old ) So do I, but I have to help mother with the cooking.
Mr Jones: I like staying at home and being with my family.
Pedro: What about food? Do you eat anything special?
Mrs Jones: Well, we have turkey with roast potatoes and Brussels sprouts, all this served with gravy. Then comes Christmas Pudding covered with flaming rum or brandy. Traditionally, English people used to drink beer but now more and more people drink a good French or Portuguese wine with their meal.
Pedro: What do you usually do on Christmas Eve?
David: We pull crackers, we play with our cousins, we hang stockings on our beds and we put letters to Father Christmas near the fireplace.
Rose: ( laughing ) Then Father Christmas lands on the roof and comes down the chimney with our presents.
Pedro: What do you do on Christmas Day?
Mr Jones: We stay in bed until late. We go to church and we watch the Queen on television.
Mrs Jones: I don’t stay in bed. I have to cook that big lunch for you!
Pedro:  What will you get for Christmas this year?
Mr Jones: Nobody knows.
David: I’ve asked for a new tape recorder and I’m sure I’ll get one.
Mr Jones: Don’t be so sure. Father Christmas knows how lazy you are.
Pedro: Which are your favourite Christmas songs and carols?

Andie’s piece of heaven

Andie Macdowell lives in a cabin in Montana. Life starts early at her Ranch. I
Read the Following text very carefully:

Naomi Campbell - an interview

Reporter: You’re a supermodel, but do you ever see photos of yourself that you hate?
N.C. : I don’t like the word ‘supermodel’ - there’s no super human being anywhere! I’m a model and that’s
that. I’m critical of all my pictures and when I see them in a magazine I look at them as if I’m looking at    another person.
Reporter: Because you look good, do people automatically assume that you are a bimbo?
N.C. : Yes... People believe the myth that the models are stupid. But these days we have to be very business-    - orientated and we’re much more in control - with help, of course. But we have to make the decisions.
Reporter: What’s your idea of a really good night out?
N.C. : A cosy dinner, maybe a movie, and then back to my house to listen to music with someone I like very    much.
Reporter: Who would you like to go out for dinner with - Tom Cruise, Albert Einstein or Oscar Wilde?
N.C. : Einstein - because he was crazier than I am.
Reporter: Do you have a contract with a cosmetics company like many other models?
N.C. : No, and I think it’s probably because I’m too controversial. I change my look so often and they can’t rely     on me to keep the same hairstyle for one or two weeks. They like the girls to stay exactly the same. I     think this is very boring.
Reporter: If you could be an animal, what would you choose?
N.C. : a fawn. A couple of people have told me that I look like a baby fawn. And I love Bambi’s eyes ... they’re    so warm...
Reporter: What does really upset you?
N.C. : The worst crime for me is child abuse, because the victims are young and innocent, and can’t do     anything about it.
Reporter: Do you want to be an actress eventually?
N.C. : No, not really. But if someone invites me to get into a film that’s fine. Although it’s not something that I    dream of. I’d love to play Carmen in Carmen Jones.
I can sing reasonably well, I’ve already signed up with Sony and I’m working on an album.

Ireland - test paper

Please read the following conversation very carefully:

A Portuguese boy who wants to visit Ireland next Summer is asking an Irish journalist in Portugal about his country. Read the conversation they had.

This is Ireland

Boy: I’d like to know something of your country, you see, I’m going there next summer.
Journalist: First of all, I must tell you the island is politically divided into two parts: the larger one is the
Republic of Ireland, in the South. Its capital is Dublin. The smaller part, Northern Ireland, belongs to the United Kingdom and its capital is Belfast. I’m sure you’ve heard about the divisions and conflicts there. The majority of people hope the peace treaty is permanent and will last for ever.
Boy: What about the landscape?
Journalist: Ireland is a very green country, with lots of farms, lakes, small islands, old ruins. It rains a lot, but the climate is temperate.
Boy: How are the Irish people?
Journalist: I must say the Irish are kind and friendly, with a sense of humour. Our country is not rich, so many families left Ireland to find better conditions in other countries all over the world, especially in the USA and Australia.
Boy: I know Saint Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland...
Journalist: Yes, he was born in England in the 5th century and he went to Ireland as a slave. He ran away to Europe, where he became a priest. He came back to Ireland as a bishop; he built more than 50 churches and converted Ireland into Christianity.
Boy: Irish music is very famous. I love Sinead O’Connor’s songs...
Journalist:  Oh, yes! I’m sure you know U2, a very successful band. They started in Dublin in 1979.
And Irish traditional music is also very popular, even with young people.
Boy: What about food and drink?
Journalist: Well, ‘a pint of beer’ is something an adult simply must try! Guinness is the best – strong, dark beer, with no chemicals.
And, of course, Irish Coffee... for adults again, of course.
Boy: What about sports?
Journalist: Hurling is the typical Irish game. It’s almost as old as Ireland itself and it’s considered the fastest land game in the world...

Portugal is an ancient country, too. It is part of the Iberian Peninsula in the Southwest of Europe. _______________  is the capital city. The Prime Minister and the President of the Republic live there. It is much smaller than London, but many tourists can be seen there as well and they can do a lot of sightseeing, too. There are some interesting museums, ancient palaces, old quarters.

Oporto is another Portuguese city, probably the most important in the North of Portugal. It has always played an important role in the relations between England and Portugal and there are still a number of British families who live there, most of them related to the port wine business. That’s why some port wine trade marks are of English origin, and we can see them painted on the roofs of the lodges. Anyway, we can’t help remembering that a Treaty was signed by Portuguese and English rulers in the 14th century and that it is still in force. It is the oldest alliance in the world.
Other important urban centres are Coimbra, Évora, Braga and Faro.

Though both in England and in Portugal, the northern part of the country has been more highly industrialised than the South, things have been changing and industry can be found almost everywhere. In England the South is richer than the North but the opposite is true in Portugal.

As it rains a lot in England, especially in the West, the countryside is much greener than in Portugal, where Nature is generally considered more beautiful in the North than in the South.
