What is 45 Grave? 45 Grave, our favorite heavy-Metal-psychedelic-post-punk-what-the-fuck-ghoul-rockers.
During 1979-1990 in Los Angeles, 45 Grave was churning out their own brand of Ghoul rock. Dinah Cancer-vocals, Paul Cutler-guitar, Rob Graves-bass, and Don Bolles-drums was the main line up.
From Dinah Cancer: I'm building this as goal to keep the spirit of 45 Grave alive and also a personal archive of my best memories being the driving force and front person of 45 Grave. This is a part of my life that indeed changed me forever.
The story of 45 Grave.
What is 45 Grave? Well, 25 years ago and around this time of year. A group of 5 people were messin' around and jammin' in SOS studios. With a little TEAC 8 track recorder, beer and craziness, they recorded a song that changed a little music scene forever. Riboflavin Flavored non Carbonated Poly Unsaturated Blood. A rather obscure cover tune from the sixties. It was catchy and noisy. Complete with squeaky toy and flangers. It came out on the LAFMS comp. But what about the name? What should it be call? Maybe something serious? Hell no. Should it be Punk? Could be. Gloomy? Sure. Metal? of course. Maybe a name off a button? Yeah. The name meant everything and nothing. It was whatever your imagination thought it should be. 45 Grave was born in the chaos of the punk movement. And with other bands, it splintered off into what would be known as the death rock/ Gothic scenes. Strong punk/metal roots, 45 Grave is what you want it to be. An ever changing music form that could fit in to your dreams and your nightmares.
Our first live show was at the Hong Kong Cafe in Downtown Los Angeles, around late 79/80. I remember that a review said I couldn't sing and I wore my mini skirt way too high to cover that fact. HA HA HA. I thought I wasn't trying to sing. At least I can wear a mini skirt. We were there to irritate and we did. I never claimed to be a singer. I did what came to me and if people like it Fucking cool. I did it because it made me feel happy. At this time we were playing the Consumers songs that Paul had wrote. I changed some of the song lyrics to fit with my style. And I didn't sing like David Wiley "RIP", the Consumers singer. We started to write Wax, Partytime and Black Cross. The first incarnation of Partytime was at punk thrash speed. Later, It became the metal monster. That was a wild summer at SOS studios. There was some personal stuff going on . Alot of stuff was happening. We listened to ACDC, Alice Cooper and King Crimson. we made noise in the studio. I don't remember being sober during that period. LOL. And it did make me what I am today. We recorded Black Cross/ Wax at SOS studios. It was released on Goldar records. People asked me about the lyrics to Black Cross. The only thing I can say is take a hit of acid and find out for yourself. Our next show at the Starwood with Fear. We played at Fender's ballroom, the Fleetwood, Stardust ballroom, Whiskey, Godzilla's, Vex, Happyhaus, Scream, and others that have long disappeared.
This is the 25th anniversary of 45 Grave! Hell is coming to your House!
