The focus of my research is the understanding of the complex mechanisms and causes of the evolution of eruptive dynamics during explosive eruptions (convective vs.collapsing; effusive vs. explosive). I combine stratigraphic and sedimentologic study of pyroclastic deposits together with geochemical and petrological analysis of erupted magma. I give a particular emphasis to 1) the quantification of the pristine content of volatiles (H2O, sulphur, halogens) in the magma, 2) the determination of their speciation, 3) the definition of their degassing dynamics (open vs. closed system), 4) the chemistry of volatile-bearing mineral phases. Bulk rock content of volatiles is determined after pyrohydrolysis by ion chromatography (S,F,Cl), ICP-MS (Br,I) and hydrogen manometry. Melt inclusions and mineral phases are analyzed by Raman spectrometry and electron microprobe.
My previous study sites include Mt. Pinatubo (Philippines), Quilotoa Caldera (Ecuador), Mt. Vulture and Phlegrean Fields (Italy), Milos (Greece), Pico de Orizaba (Mexico).
