3.Scaffolding

The following information is from

What is Scaffolding? http://condor.admin.ccny.cuny.edu/~al7165/scaffolding.htm

Scaffolding is not only a procedure used for building but also is a tool in which adults and/or peers provide support to students as their cognitive skills develop when involved in a learning task. In the early phases of a task, a great deal of support is provided to aid the student with a lesson. As the task prolongs, the amount of support given diminishes, slowly turning the responsibility of learning to complete the task over to the students. Like construction, a scaffold provides the support for a building to develop and grow; whereas, referring to the educational perspective of scaffolding the teacher begins the structures of the cognitive task and then gradually allows the student to continue until they've mastered the ability to do the lesson efficiently.

Scaffolding focuses on active learning and student choice. It allows students to work self-reliantly while receiving adequate support, according to Koos Winnips (2000). The adult provides guidance and feedback, supporting the child's successful participation in an activity. In the process, the support is adjusted to challenge the child, as they become capable enough to develop and express his or her owns thoughts.

Characteristics of a good scaffold

1. Providing clear directions,
2. Clarifying purpose,
3. Keeping students on task,
4. Offering assessment to clarify expectations,
5. Pointing students to worthy sources,
6. Reducing uncertainty,
7. Delivering efficiency, and
8. Creates momentum.

Using your essential question from Task 3, create a research assignment with scaffolding.

Making sure you list the criteria for a piece of work, or "what counts" and articulate gradations of quality for each criterion, from excellent to poor.
