Many people heard of the alpha leak for Doom III but didn't have a chance
to grab their hands on it. I managed to get mine off this little thing called Kazaa. It came in around a 364mb download but unzipped
to a surprising total of 1.01GB. As many of you know
the alpha was leaked by one member of ATI who was later fired, but nonetheless the alpha is nothing too great.
It features three playable levels e3_1 , e3_2 and e3_3. When I first launched the game I was extremely surprised
that it ran on a ATI Rage 128 Pro II( for those who are not familiar with the card, this one just has 32mb memory size).
Many people are worried about supporting Doom III, but from my opinion I think many of the latest cards will support the game,
excluding some fancy effects that come with the latest versions of Direct X and OpenGL, which some cards dont support.
My card was running the game at a maximum of 6 FPS which looked pretty bad but I didnt care since I knew what I was in for.
The further in the game I went the more intense the mood began to feel. With scary cries, swinging lights, gun shots, etc.
comming out of a 6.1 surround sound system Doom III quickly got me in the mood. The first three levels looked decent.
Many of the old characters showed up such as the zombies, the pinky demon, the hell knight, and the imp, just this time around
they looked alot more real and scary.
The game was really hard for my card to keep up but it managed to load this at 1 FPS =)
The "dummy" effect also gave a realistic scene. When I shot down an enemy on a higher level, it would slide down the stairs
or fall over a guard rail, when I shot a box, it would move , when I stepped near an object most of the times it would move.
It was a very interesting and interactive environment. Level times were pretty short just under 30 seconds.
