So now it's your turn to take out your frustrations on the first year newbies. You either can spray them with your water gun filled with beer or you can actually find yourself a "little buddy" who will worship the ground you walk on (every tyrant needs a "yes" man). Don't overstep your boundaries and burn bridges with the new kids, you never know whose pharmacy you might be applying to in the future and emotional scars don't fade fast...
With the basic science crap out of the way, we move on to the basic pharmacy crap. During the year you will take stimulating classes such as Part 2 of the much appreciated Medicinal Chemistry (still just a fancy name for Organic Chem 2), you will begin a foray into the magnificant world of biopharmaceutics, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics (you know, the parts you skip over while reading a drug's monograph), at this time a shout-out to the coolest prof in the world, Dr. Jean-Louis Brazier who actually made this class fun and comprehensible!! And of course you begin a 2 year journey through the perils of pharmacology, how drugs work, but since you don't really know any drugs at this point, part 1 is a jumbled mess. Compounding pharmacy (pharmacie galnique) plays a big role in year 2, you prepare a bunch of cool stuff like gum, lolipops, candy, chocolate syrup... but you also struggle with creams, emulsions, and the bane of every second year student's existence, the suppository. This is when your first year lackey might come in handy, offer to pay him to clean your lab equipment cuz there is a crapload of dishes to do once your lab is over. This way you can enjoy longer lunch hours.
By now you should have your little group of friends (or clique) and should have a usual section in each classroom reserved for you (front row geek, middle nobody or back bencher). That's the charm of pharmacy school, even in a class full of nerds, there will always be that caste separation inherent to all university programs. Yes, I am a genius, but does that mean I have to dress and act like a nerd? No, I am a cool stud who just happens to be smart, not to mention could kick YOUR ass!! Punk! ...Where was I going with this?... Ah yes, comfort! At this point you should feel comfortable with where you are and how things work, so you should try to expand your horizons by taking on the challenges of student oriented conferences like the COCEP and the PDW (the meaning of the acronyms (thank you Robin) escapes me but the P's stand for Pharmacy, hehe:-)). Here you get to meet students from around Canada and have fun and maybe even learn a few things, like drinking games from the Maritimes. The PDW moves from city to city every year and if you do decide to go, you get to miss classes (always a plus).
Finals aren't too tough this year, not like in 1st year, you'll manage with minimal brain loss. However as the summer sun shines, so does the looming spectre of the summer internship. Second year students have the choice of doing their internship in either the hospital sector or continue on in a pharmacy. I strongly suggest you start looking at hospitals first AND early. The openings get taken fast so you have to move swiftly. Grab the Yellow Pages and start calling! The internship itself is no more different than the first one, mostly hiding in corners and counting pills... Fear not, for salvation is but a few months away in the form of PHARMACOTHERAPY.
