How
the Tapetree works
A "Tapetree" is a non profit way for fans to distribute music
recordings
among themselves. The term "Tapetree" was developed by fans of the
group "The
Grateful Dead", known as Deadheads. The Deadheads gave each stage of
distributing these recordings a tree related name. In a lot of ways like a
family tree is laid out. Beginning with a "Seed", then a
"Root", then a "Branch"
and ending with a "Leaf". Confused? Don't be, here is how it all works
out.
A cd or
tape of a rare or concert recording is sent to TeRRy for
remastering. TeRRy then uses a number of editing software and plug-ins to
achieve the best possible sound. This recording is referred to as the "Seed."
The "Seed" is duplicated three times and sent out for
distribution. One
is sent to the original supplier of the recording for him or her to keep. One is
sent to Torben Askholm who is referred to as a "Root." Torben is in
charge of
distributing the "Seeds" throughout Europe. The final copy is sent to
myself
(Root) for distributing throughout North America and Australia.
The seeds are then sent out to people that are referred to as
"Branches".
These "Branches" have cd-burners and make copies of the original cds.
"Branches"
are required to make "Disc At Once" copies, with no gaps or edits in
between
tracks.
Everyone else on the Tapetree is referred to as a "Leaf". These
people
are assigned a "Branch" when they first join the DDT. If a
"Leaf" wants a copy
of the "Seed", they are to send blank cdrs and return postage to their
"Branch".
For
example, if a particular show was 2 cds long. The "Leaf" would buy 2
blank
cds and 2 padded envelopes (with one envelope larger than the other). They would
take the 2 cds and place them into the smaller envelope. Write a note detailing
what show they want and write their return address on this envelope. Affix the
proper return postage to the smaller envelope and then place this envelope into
the
larger envelope. Seal it and mail it off to your "Branch".
The "Branch" is required to receive your package, make your
copies and
send them back to you in a timely matter.
