Which fixed lens digital camera has the longest
reach?
This is based on the formula described by Rodger Carter and Rick
Matthews, at Digicamhistory.com: Telephoto
Figure of Merit: Explanation and Uses .
The article can also be found in Mav Magazine: Telephoto
Figure of Merit: Explanation and Uses .
Please refer to the above web site for more details on the formula
and
the theory behind it.
The table below is sorted by the longest reach, in descending order.
Longest reach is as defined above: pixels*pixels*square of
(Focal Length).
Disclaimer
This table is derived from published specifications of cameras and it
is intended for entertainment
purposes only.
Actual image quality of the different cameras listed at their longest
reach depends on a variety of factors, not limited to number of pixels
and
focal length.
Please do not make any purchase decisions because of the data presented
in this table.

NOTES
1. Unless otherwise specified in the Notes below, all of the
specifications were taken
from dpreview.
2. Fuji's interpolated numbers are no longer included for two reasons:
a) table is getting crowded b) Fuji SuperCCD interpolation is a
controversial/subject-to-debate item
you do not see any benefit from SCCD interpolation with the smaller
sensors.
3. NEW means the camera was not included in the previous
version of this table.
4. Kowa TD-1 was removed. It would have been #1 but it's not exactly
your typical digital camera. Kowa details on IR.
5. If you have any comments, corrections, suggestions, pls feel free to
send an email
or find me in the dpreview
forums
6. Kodak DX6490's specifications were taken from kodak.com
7. Kyocera M400R/M410R specifications were taken from the Kyocera Japan
8. Olympus C725 and C760 specifications were taken from Olympus UK
9. The column in the chart called "Ratio LZ" is
a
ratio of the reach of each camera compared to a typical (and mythical)
3
Megapixel 10X zoom camera, which also happens to be the specs of of
Minolta
Z1/Olympus C740/C730 and Canon S1 IS, and very near the reach of Fuji
S5000, Pentax MX
and HP 945. To simplify matters, Minolta Z1 can be considered the
"average
typical entry-level long zoom" for this table.
10. Typical 3mp to 7mp 3x zooms were added as
comparison/reference
points. Since most of them are between 100 - 110mm, I used 105mm as the
typical
max FL.
11. [NEW feature] To make the numbers easier to read for
the non-geek/math-averse population, the numbers represented are in
billions. It gives the reader a smaller number to look at.
12. [NEW feature] The column in the chart called "Ratio
PS" is
a
ratio of the reach of each camera compared to a typical (and mythical)
5 Megapixel 3X optical zoom Point and Shoot camera.
13. Pentax MX specifications were taken from ImagingResource.com
14. Samsung Pro815 specs were taken from ImagingResource.com
15. Kodak P880 and P850 specs from Kodak.com
16. The two Panasonic FZ30 EZ modes are included as part of a
discussion on the EZ modes in the dpreview Panasonic forums. The EZ
modes are not providing additional reach to the camera, but they can be
a handy feature for some users.
Editiorial note: Example of importance max focal length over
megapixels
for the purposes of a longer reach: Compare the 2MP the Panasonic FZ1
to
the typical 7MP 3x zoom camera
