Why The Ten Commandments Should Not Be Followed
by Ninazu Xul
I. Thou shalt have no other gods before me
Why not? Seriously.... why not? What makes this one so special? He had his own son murdered in a very humiliating way. Why worship someone like that? And one more thing.... sounds like he has a very serious self esteem problem. Think about it. His only power lies only in the people who worship him. That's it. I don't have an answer for how everything came to be. Maybe it was "his creation". However, he still was not a very good man. (refering to the child abuse he inflicted on his own flesh and blood) If he was truly so great and powerful, then he should be worshipped because people want to worship him. Not because they're told to.
II. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
Okay. Say someone hit your child. Or even you for that matter, hit you with a baseball bat. You're not allowed to say that they suck? Why? You can't call someone an asshole for stealing from you? Why? No, people shouldn't talk bad about themselves, but if someone did something bad to me, and me just holding back for fear that I won't get into heaven when I die, I'm sorry but that is pathetic. This day in age, half the people in the world suck. I'm not afraid to say it. If someone does soemthing bad to me, I will express how I feel about that person, regardless. It does more harm then good holding back emotions and ignoring them is much more damaging then expressing them.
III. Thou shalt not take the name of thy lord thy god in vain
Well, once again I feel inclined to ask... why not? If god is the one who kills people using "natural causes" then I have every right to use his name in vain. Have any of you ever had someone close to you die? Well, if not, I have. Quite recently too. My 14 year old neice. Almost an exact month before she was to turn 15. She had cancer. If it was his doing to make this girl suffer then take her life so young, then why can't he take responsibility for his own actions and allow me to curse at him for doing this? I have very little respect for people who feel they cannot be blamed when it was their own doing.
IV. Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy
Okay. This one takes some thinking. If people are truly religious then wouldn't every day be holy for them? Why have it be just one day? That doesn't make sense to me. And what happens if you don't? What if you have plans? Then are you doomed to Hell? I don't get it.
V. Honour thy father and thy mother
What if they don't honour you? What if they're abusive? What if they neglect you? What if they hurt you emotionally? Then what? Are you still supposed to honour them? That will only hurt you. I agree with this one, but only if they honour you as well. Otherwise I don't see the point in it.
VI. Thou shalt not kill
Once again, here it comes... why not? That's kind of hypocritical don't you think? These are the words of a man who can kill anyone and anything he chooses to. He can inflict them with disease, make them suffer, or take them out with no pain at all. Why does a serial killer get the right to say that no one can kill, when he messes with people's lives as a living? Man, he is so egotistical. Well, one of my favorite sayings comes to mind. Gotta respect god somewhat. He's killed more people then Hitler.
VII. Thou shalt not commit adultery
Okay. Once again, here's another one I agree with. People should not cheat on their spouses. However, though it is wrong, they still have the right to do so if they so desire. Maybe they're having serious marital problems. Though it's not the best way to resolve things, no one has the right to tell another person what to do. Giving them advice is one thing, but coming right out and saying "you are not allowed to do this" what do you think they're going to want to do? Don't think of a pink elephant. What comes to mind? You cannot tell another person not to do something because that's the first thing they'll think about doing. Help them out. Don't control them.
VIII. Thou shalt not steal
Well, true, unless it comes down to your survival. If you are starving to death and have no money, steal food. If you get caught, well, at least they feed you in jail. If your kids are cold, steal them blankets. I don't agree with stealing, but if comes down to myself or my family being sick or hungry, yes I would steal. Survival comes first.
IX. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor
Okay. People shouldn't lie just for the soul purpose of getting another person in trouble, however, if they have been horrible to you before, then why not? They deserve it. If they have messed up your life and you have the chance to get back at them, do it. Go ahead, try it. You might feel better.
X. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors house, nor thy neighbor's wife, nor anything that is thy neighbors
This one actually makes me laugh. I truly find this commandment the most amusing one of all! Say you are homeless and you know someone who lives in a mansion. You're not supposed to desire their house? Or say you're not married and that same person with the mansion has a beautiful wife. You can't desire her as long as you don't act upon it? To desire is to be human. To not desire anything is to lie to yourself. If you're happy wtih the way everything in your life is, then fine! More power to ya! But wanting something someone else has is natural. It fits your taste. To not desire anything you are denying yourself of everything because you don't truly know what your tastes are. Is that any way to live? Not for me!
I'm not going to lie.... some of these commandments i do agree with, but all to a limit. No one else has the right to tell another human being how to live. People should only take the ones the agree with out of the 10, and use them as a tool to follow. Not center your whole life on trying so hard not break any of these. It's impossible not to break them because a couple of these goes against the natural instincts that are a part of being human. So relax and enjoy life to the fullest.
