What is Identity?

By: Marie Simmons

Being the new kid is tough. Besides catching up on the class work you missed, there’s making friends, finding activities, and generally fitting in. which brings a question to mind: What makes us who we are?  I’ve mulled over that very thought for most of my teenage life and have yet to find the answer.  I’ve heard that our actions define us, but there are some that think our parents shape us. Even other believe we’ll never figure out this age-old puzzle though not from lack of trying.  I see people reading the Bible and other religious texts hoping to find answers.  While I may have a handle on parts of my life, I know nothing’s set in stone.  Takes the case of George Davies. In our parent’s youth, he was the living embodiment of Warrior Angel, with an Emmy-winning TV show and many appearances in the famous guise.  Ultimately, his vulnerability shown through when he was thrown from a horse at a dressage completion.  I heard he’s making great progress, but most of know our Warrior Angel may never walk again.  My own riding career could end just as quick.  Rodeo’s a big part of my life, but it’s not my entire life. I come from a God-fearing family but my devotion is still only one part of the whole.  I hope that through writing this article and dealing with one of my disabilities by handwriting it, I made some points that will stick out in your mind the next time someone asks the seemingly simple question, “Who are you?”
