| Rothrock Family | ||||
The family name was Rothrock when they came from Germany. Many of the children kept that spelling but some used different spellings. Ludwig Rothrock born 1723 as estimated from the 1730 Leisalheim census is believedto have come to America in 1736 with his father, Johannes Rothrock born 1684 and wife Anna Margareta. They had five sons and two daughters. The two sons, Ludwig (1723-1787) and his brother Andreas (Andrew) (1730-1804) had descendants who have phonetically altered the spelling of the surnames. These are the two brothers that I want to look at. Most of their descendants settled in the Hardy County, Virginia (now Grant County, WV area) Ludwig had six sons and five daughters. Andrew had four sons and five daughters. The Rotruck Family which began as Rothrock: Ludwig Rothrock born 1723 as estimated from the 1730 Leisalheim cenus is believed to have come to America in 1736 with his father, Johannes. Will of Ludwig 2 IN THE NAME OFGOD AMEN. Henry Boteler James Allen Edward Boteler (Will admitted to probate by the court on the 28th day of October 1797). Recorded in Wills, Liber A. folio 368. Test Harry Newcome-register of wills. On 29 October 1797 Conrad Maser renounced his executorships. Also on 29 October 1797 Catharine, Ludwigs wife renounced her bequest and elected a dower or third part of this estate. Catharine Roderick (her mark) On 4 November 1797 Peter Miller (Dunkard) swore to his witnessing of the will. The Roderick Family By J. W. Roderick, a descendant of Ludwigs son Ludwig (or Lewis) I have been asked by some of the younger members of the Roderick family for a genealogical sketch of the family. I shall proceed to give it as best I can, but that portion of it prior to the 19th century must be very meager as no record of the family until near the close of the 18th century. Prior to that time I have nothing by tradition. My grandfather, Peter Roderick, informed me that early in the 18th century three brothers came from Germany. They also brought their father with them. Two of those brothers reared families in Frederick County, Maryland; the other brother had no family that I have heard of. Late in the 18th century, Lewis Roderick, a son of one of those original Germans, married Susan Morris, and while their family were yet small they emigrated from Frederick County, Maryland to Hampshire County, Virginia. At the same time that Lewis Roderick came to Virginia his brother-in-law, Nicholas Leatherman, came (Leatherman having married Susan, a sister of Lewis Roderick). From this couple have sprung the numerous family of Leathermans now scattered throughout Hampshire, Hardy, Grant, Mineral and several counties in the western part of W.VA, as well as a pretty fair representation in MO., Indiana, and IL, as well as several other states south and west. When they came to Virginia, Nicholas Leatherman bought a lease on Pattersons Creek of the 9000 acre manor, while Lewis Roderick purchased a Putman Tract on what is known as Rawlings Run. Here he remained but a few years until he sold out and moved to Coshocton County, Ohio, where he located a half section of U.S. land where he spent the remainder of his life, dying at the age of 97 years. He settled in Ohio about the year 1790, or a short later, the North Western territory was thrown open for settlement in 1788. Lewis Roderick was an elder in the German Baptist (Dunkard) Church for over 60 years and we have been informed that he preached nearly every Sunday during that period. Lewis Rodericks sons were Levi, Zale, Thomas, Benjamin, and Absalum all of which reared families. Several of them large families in Ohio who are now scattered throughout the western states from Ohio to the Pacific Coast. Peter Roderick, the 3rd son, left home at the age of 17 years, and came across the mountains to his uncle Leathermans where he remained marrying at the age of 19 years to Catherine Miller, who was 1 year his senior. Her mothers maiden name was Susan Painter and her father Jacob Miller. Peter Roderick remained in Hampshire County and reared a family of 3 boys and 5 girls; his boys were Jacob M., Benjamin L., and John J. Now let us look into the different spelling of the name. The German name spelled in English letters would be as near as we can make it something like this Rote-truck, which as interpreted in English would be Red-coat. Now the supposition is that those Germans when they came to this country and used English letters to spell their name they spell it so as to sound as near like it was pronounced in the German as they could, hence they spelled it Rotruck. Then some of the family when they became educated in the English language found that the name was also an English name and spelled Roderick, derivation, Old High German signification Red-coat. (See Websters unabridged dictionary). Just when Lewis Roderick changed the spelling of the name from Rotruck to Roderick is when he went from Virginia to Ohio, but he undoubtedly made the change for he had a brother (Abram Rotruck of Hardy County) who also wrote it Rotruck and his descendants spill it so to this day. Andrew who settled on Mill Creek in Hampshire and John who settled in Hardy Counties who were cousins to Lewis and Abram, both wrote the name Rotetruck, but John soon changed it to Rotruck. The mode of spelling the name Rodruck is undoubtedly a mistake of Peter Rodruck. He was brought up in the wilds of Ohio and had no education, not even a knowledge of the alphabet until his wife learned him to read and write and as the name was not spelled in that way by any one but him and his family it is evident that it was a mistake of his; He had no intercourse with his father or brothers from the time he left them until his eldest son was 21 years of age, then he (the son) paid a visit to his Roderick relatives in Ohio and there learned that they wrote the name Roderick. Nevertheless, Peter Rodruck and his sons continued to spell the name as they had been doing, as long as they lived, but the grandchildren (all who are not too contrary) now spell the name the correct English way and as Lewis and five of his sons spelled it Roderick. A few years ago there was a sign on an office door in Harpers Ferry that bore the name Hezakiah Roderick, Attorney at Law: he had come there from Washington City, Maryland. There is now in Martinsbury, a dry good store whose sign bears the name J. W. Roderick. He came to that place from Frederick County, Maryland and says he is of our family. Lewis Roderick and his brother Abram Rotruck had other brothers who remained in Frederick County, Maryland, that we know but little of. Abram Rotruck was the grandfather of Rev. Wm D. Rotruck and the late Abram Rotruck of Grant County. And thereby the founder of a large branch of the family in that portion of the country. John a cousin to Lewis and Abram was founder of another large branch of the family. Abram Rotruck came to Virginia before Lewis came; also Andrew Rotruck, who settled on Mill Creek in Hampshire County, Maryland. Andrew had no sons in his family. Therefore the name was lost in his descendants. (Here Mr. Roderick made an error) He had one daughter who married a Ludwick and was the mother of Andrew Ludwick in Hampshire County. Another daughter married ____Fink; she was the mother of Daniel Fink and Barbary Bane of Staggs Run, hence the grandmother of Geo. Bane of Sulphur and Sam of Keyser. She was also the mother of Sam and Catherine Fink, who never married but remained al their lives at the old home on Mill Creek. The two families of Rotrucks in Grant County claim that they are not related to each other or to us, but one family of them have descended from a brother of Lewis Roderick, and the other family from a cousin to Lewis and Abram. There is another wing of the family in Grant County (the Blacksmith John Family) who say their grandfather John came from Germany and hence are no kindred of our or the other two (tribes) in Grant County; this is incorrect for their Grandfather John came from Maryland and used to, some 80 or 85 years ago, visit his cousin Peter Roderick on Pattersons Creek. Lewis Rodericks two eldest sons, Levi and Zale served in the army of the North West, throughout the War of 1812. They were in Gen Cass famous march of three days through the Black swamps of Indiana wading in water from boot-top to hip deep all day and cutting down timber to lay on at night. They were in the battle of The Thames in Canada where Tecumsha was killed but was in that portion of Harrisons army that were thrown against the British therefore was not in it at the killing of the great. Second Generation Ludwig line (Leatherman) Susanna, daughter of Ludwig , was born about 1755 or earlier. She married Nicholas Leatherman. Considerable information on this family and descendants is found in All Leatherman Kin History by Rev. John Leatherman and Annie Leatherman Candler (1940) from which the following is abstracted: Nicholas Leatherman was born and reared near Hagerstown and farmed first in Frederick County. He sols his land there on 28 April 1784 and on 10 August 1784 bought tracts of 185 and 131 acres on Patterson Creek in Hampshire County, Virginia, now West Virginia. Lewis Roderick or Rotruck, his brother-in-law, also moved to Hampshire County, where Lewis stayed for nine years and hen moved to Ohio. Nicholas Leatherman settled on a farm located between Burlington and Headsville in what is now Mineral County, formed out of Hampshire County in 1866. The history cited above states that Nicholas died in 1790 but this appears to be an error as Frederick County Deed Book L. p. 464refers to Susanna wife of Nicholas Leatherman on 28 November 1798. Nicholas and Susanna were buried in a family plot on the far, owned later by a Biser family. Third Generation The children of Nicholas and Susanna 3 (Roderick or Rotruck) Leatherman were: I. Daniel Leatherman born March 01, 1774, died January 10, 1853 married Catherine Rawlings born August 04, 18, 1781, died September 19, 1854, daughter of Benjamin Rawlings. Marinda Leatherman born July 07. 1807 married Abraham Rotruck born January 17, 1808, died April 11, 1895. These data from the Leatherman History may be compared with a Grant County death record for Abraham Rotruck died April 19, 1895 aged 82 years 2 months 27 days old. Born January 13, 1813 whose parents were A. and P. Rotruck, wife M. Rotruck, son W. D. Rotruck. Despite the discrepancies, I believe that both records refer to the same person. Abraham 4 (Abraham 3, Ludwig 2) The issue of Abraham and Marinda are reported in the section on Abraham 3 (Ludwig 2) on page 237-353 of the Rothrock genealogy book. All Leatherman Kin History contains much additional information of this family group. A number of intermarriages of Leatherman descendants with Rotrucks and Rodericks are recorded. Third Generation Abraham 3 (Ludwig2) Line. (Rotruck) Abraham 3 Abraham, son of Ludwig, 2 was grown by 1785 judging from the order in which Ludwig names his sons in his will. His birth would then be 1765 or earlier. He is not named in the 1790 census. In 1798 he was described as a resident of Hardy County, Virginia, now West Virginia, and in 1803 of Hampshire County. These counties adjoin, Harding having been formed from Hampshire in 1786. On July 04, 1796 Abraham Rotrock of Hardy County bought from Philip Noel a tract of 194 acres on Pond Lick and Mickes Run, drains of Patterson Creek (book 4 p. 107) this was probably Abraham 3, although Abraham the son of Andrew2 was in the area at the same time. The latter Abraham moved before 191815 to Pennsylvania. An Abraham Rothrock (sic) and Elizabeth Roberts Of Antietam were married on January 26, 1785 at the German Reformed Church of Frederick, Maryland. Antietam is in southern Washington County where Ludwig 2 lived, which suggests that this was Abraham 3 (Ludwig2). Further confirmation is a death record of Hannah (Rotruck) Likens, daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Rotruck. Abraham appears to have had a second wife (Hepsibah). An Abraham Rotruck of Hardy County made a will dated May 05, 1837 that was probated February 05, 1838. His wife, Hepsibah, was to receive all lands for 5 years, after which she would have one-third of the property including the house, the rest to go to the children (not named). Solomon Leatherman witnessed. In 1838 and 1839 sales of some of the personal property of Abraham were made to Lewis, Daniel, John and Abraham Rotruck, to Hepsy, and to Solomon Leatherman. Abraham Rotruck bought a large Bible for $4.05 (Hardy County will Book 6, p. 326, 360). On February 02, 1838 the heirs of Abraham made an agreement with his widow, Hepsy, on property distribution different from that specified in the will (Deed Book 15, p 5.) The heirs were: Lewis Rotruck, John Roberts John Rotruck Eliza Leatherman Abraham Rotruck James Likens Hannah Rotruck Michael Likens The logical presumption is that Lewis, John, Abraham, Hannah and Eliza were children of Abraham; the others, grandchildren Although proof is lacking, it appears that this Abraham who died in 1838was abraham3 (Ludwig2). He is almost certainly the Abraham Roderick listed in the 1830 census for Hardy County, Virginia, age 60-70 e.g., born 1760-1770. His house hold consisted of a female 60-70, 2 males 20-30, a male 10-15, 2 females 20-30, and 1 female 10-15. In 1820 he is listed ass over 44 with 2 females over 44, 1 male 26-44, 2 males 10-15, 4 females 16-25, 1 female 10-15. Using the available evidence and with the qualifications noted, Abraham 3 (Ludwig2) can be stated as follows: Abraham 3 born ca. 1765-died 1838 married (1) January 26, 1785 Elizabeth Roberts married (2) Hepsibah born 1790-1800. Issue; I. Lewis 4 A Lewis Rotruck age 65 appears in the 1850 census of Hardy County, in the family of Elijah Leatherman age 55 and Elizabeth Leatherman age 50. II. John 4 possibly born 1788, died September 20, 1877 III. Abraham 4 born January 17, 1808, died April 11, 1895 married Marinda Leatherman born 1807. IV. Hannah 4 born ca 1805, died April 08, 1883 married (1840) George Likens V. Eliza 4 married Leatherman VI. Daughter 4 married Roberts. Son John VII. Daughter m. Likens sons James and Michael This may be Catherine Rotruck born January 1791, died September 01, 1875 married Michael Likens. The will of Michael Likens, (Hardy Couinty Book 7, pi. 213, January 1842) shows wife Catherine and Children (not named) Fourth Generation Abraham 4 Abraham, believed to be the son of Abraham3 and grandson of Ludgig2, appears in the 1830 census of Hardy County as Abraham Roderick Jr. with 1 female, both 20-30, and no children. In 1840 Abraham and a female are 30-40, with 2 boys under 5, 1 goy and 2 girls 5-10, and 1 boy 10-15. Next to him in this census is Hepsibah (widow of Abraham3) age 40-50, thus born 1790-1800, In 1850 the Hardy County census hows Abraham Rotruck, Jr. agfe 42, a farmer born in Virginia, with Marinda 43, Daniel 18, Lewis 15, Melinda 22, Thomas 12, Mararet 10, Abraham 8, Zubal 6, Melinda 8 mo. Jems David 2 mo. This family corresponds to the family of Abraham and Marinda (Leatherman) Rotruck descirbved in All LeathermanKin History p. 467; the dates for Abraham are given as born January 17, 1808, died April 11, 1895 and for Marinda as July 07, 1897. those dates conforming to those of the census should be compred with a Grant County death record for Abraham Rotruck died April 10, 1895 age 87 years, 2 months, 27 days old. This record states that the parents of Abraham were A. and P. Rotruck- the basis for the P is unknown. Abraham and Marinda (Leatherman) wee cousins, Marinda being a granddaughter of Susanna3 (Ludwig 2) . all the children are believed Marindas After her death, Abraham married a widowed cousin, Rebecca (George) Arnold born November 11, 1822, died August 22, 1894, daughter of Nancy 4 (John 3, Andrew2). The following outline of descendants of Abraham4 and Marinda is compiled from Grant and Mineral County official records; from All Leatherman Kin History; and from private family records supplied by Lloyd Ambrose and Dorothy Hughes. The surname Rotrucik is used in these family lines, although the use of Roderick is found in related West Virginia families. I. Solomon 5 born December 23, 1828 married Malinda Liller II. Doll born January 01, 1850, died February 15, 1933 The Rothrock history has a 13th child as James Daniel born April 05, 1850. I believe this to be the son of Solomon and Malinda (Liller) Rotruck. No proof of the death of Solomon has been found yet but his wife Malinda and James David were in the home of Abraham and Malinda (Leatherman) Rotruck in the 1850 Census.
