Death and Funerals
Mrs. Milas D. Wallace died at her home on Black Oak Ridge Monday morning at ten o'clock, following a lingering illness. She was 76 years of age. The funeral services were held Tuesday morning at Robbins graveyard by Rev. Dodson. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery following the service. Death Of Former Resident
Mrs. Will Wallace, of Chicago,Illinios, formerly of Clinton, died Thursday, January 15th after an unsucessful operation. Deceased was the daughter of the late, W. Y. Ring and a sister of A.M. Ring of St. Louis, a former Clinton merchant. She is survived by her husband, five children, three children, one brother, and five sisters, and other relatives. WALLACE, Thelma (Bullock)-

WALLACE, THELMA - age 84 of Clinton, Tenn., passed away Sunday September 15, 2002 at Fort Sanders Park West Medical Center in Knoxville. She was of the Baptist faith. Thelma enjoyed working in her flower garden and crocheting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel L. Wallace; her parents, Will & Stella Bullock; sisters, Geraldine Bullock & Ella Spears; brothers, Jess Bullock & Clarence Bullock. Survivors: host of nieces & nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 18, 2002 from 12-2 p.m. at the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City with the funeral service following at 2 p.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Joe Bridges officiating. interment will follow a the Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City in charge of all arrangements. Fred Ward Ex-Miner Dies At 81
Fred Lee Ward,81,of Browns Flat Rd. Briceville Rt.1,died at his home last Thursday of a heart attack. A native of Anderson County, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary Ellen Ward. He was a coal miner before retiring and worked as blacksmith  and farmer in later years. Ward was a member of
Indian Bluff Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Julia Duncan Ward, a son, George Junior Ward, and a daughter, Mrs. Elsie Brown of Briceville Rt.1,three sisters, Mrs.Robert Wilson of Jacksboro, Mrs. Bill Brown of Briceville Rt.1.,and Mrs. Arvil Brown of Cleveland, Ohio, eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at Indian Bluff Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Duncan and the Rev. Edwin Phillips and the Rev. R. C. Seiber officiating. Mrs. Maggie Ward,59, died at her home in Stainville, last Monday, July 13,of heart trouble. Mrs. Ward was a member of the Stainville Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Finley Ward and three children, Mrs. Ida Chambers of Knoxville, Mrs. Poly Edmonds of Atlanta, and Lee Ward of Petros. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Grave Hill. Burial was in church cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Phillips and the Rev. Mr. Watson officiated. Mrs. Ward, 77, Fraterville Dies
A native of the Red Oak Mountain area near Caryville, Mrs. Minnie Amanda Ward, 77, of the Fraterville community, died of pneumonia Jan. 4 at Lafollette Medical Center. Mrs. Ward was a member of the Red Oak Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. Mrs. Ward was preceded in death by a son, Horace Ward. She is survived by her husband, Fletcher Ward, two sons, Billie Ward of Dayton, Ohio, and Ray  Ward of Jacksboro, three daughters, Mary Lou Long and Reba Farmer, both of Lake City, and Martha Overby of Lafollette, 25 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, brother, John Byrge of Kentucky, and two sisters, Dessie Phillips of Lake City and Dee Adkins of Sunbright. Funeral services were held Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with Revs. Robert Kennedy and Joby Byrge officiating. Burial was in Campbell Memorial Gardens.  Mrs. Ocie Hatmaker Weaver, of the Fraterville community at Lake City Rt.2,died early Wednesday morning at Lake City Hospital. She was a member of the Fraterville Baptist Church. Services will be at 2p.m. Saturday at Fraterville Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Lamb and the  Rev. Ed McKamey officiating Burial is to be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night at Martin Funeral Home in Lake City. The body will be taken home Friday morning  and the family will receive friends there Friday night. Mrs. Weaver leaves a daughter, Mrs. June Hyden of Oregon, O. two sons, Frank Weaver of Castolia, O. and Johnny Weaver of Sandusky, O. 16 grandchildren. WEBBER, Rebecca Alice (Gammons)-

Funeral Of Mrs. James Webber
The funeral of Mrs. Jas. Webber who died suddenly Thursday evening Feb. 22 at 6:20 o'clock of breaking blood vessel in the head was held Saturday morning at the Baptist church at 10:30 o'clock conducted by Rev. I. G. Murray, the pastor. The church was crowded and the services very impressive. The remains were laid to rest in Sunset cemetery. Mrs. Webber was born in the fall of 1864, and professed faith in Jesus Christ when she was young, at the age of eighteen years, joining the Baptist church at Heiskell. Her maiden name was Rebecca Alice Gammon, daughter of W. C. and Elizabeth Ann Gammon. She was married to James J. Webber May 12, 1887.To this union was born three sons, Ernest, John and Curtis, who survive her. Deceased lived a consistent christian life, was a devoted wife and a loving mother. Omer Webber Dies In Oak Ridge Hospital.
Omer Lee Webber,72,of 501 Park Ave. Clinton, died Saturday morning at Oak Ridge Hospital. He had been poor health for several weeks and had been a patient at the hospital for the past three weeks. Mr. Webber was a retired laborer. He is survived by his wife, Mary Webber, three sons,
Eugene of Detroit, Mich. Carl of Clinton, and daughters, Miss. Johnnie Webber, Miss.Myrtle Webber and Mrs. Earl Bullock of Clinton. a brother, Gid Webber of Dayton, O. two sisters, Mrs. Sallie Butcher and Mrs. Minnie Willis, both of Clinton, and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the chapel of Holley Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Ernest Conner officiating. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery. Death Takes Mrs. West Of Devonia
Mrs. Lena West, 64, whose daughter was murdered Aug. 29 while visiting her mother at Oak Ridge Hospital, died there early Tuesday morning following a long illness. Mrs. West lived at Devonia and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. She suffered  from diabetes and recently had a leg removed. A daughter, Miss. Ernie West,37, was visting her the night she was murdered, Alvin Davis, 49-year-old boy friend of Miss. West, has been charged with murder and faces trial in Criminal Court Oct.28. Mrs. West's husband, Bill Riley West, is in charge of the bath house for Consolidated Fuel Co. near Devonia. She also leaves three daughters, Mrs. Georgia Smith and Mrs. Beatrice Phillips, both of Devonia, and Mrs. Mae Ballard of Cincinnati, six sons, Roy, Mack and Dean all of Cleveland,O., Wilbert of Devonia, Emory of Knoxville and Pfc. Hoye West, who had been fighting in Vietnam, but is home on a month's leave due to his sister's murder, and 13 grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Edwin Phillips and Rev. Pitney Seiber officiating. Mrs. Louisa Kennedy West, 86, Ligias Fork community, Briceville Rt.1,died Friday at her home of complications of age. She was a native of Briceville area and the wife, of Elijah West, who died several years ago. Mrs. West lived with Mrs. Cordellia Brown in later years. Survivors include three sons, Andy Carroll of Jacksboro, Robert Seiber and Lewis Carroll of Oliver Springs, 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Byrge of Petros. Funeral services were held Sunday at Grave Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Guy Lively, the Rev. Carvin Phillips and the Rev. Edwin Phillips officiating. Burial was in Bray Cemetery. Falling Tree Kills Lake City Man
Teddy West, 58, of Lake City was killed Monday about 3 p.m. by a falling tree while he was working in the woods near the Campbell County line cutting timber for pulp wood. A son, Virgil, who was with him at the time, narrowly escaped being struck by the same tree, which was cut down by another workman in the woods. West, a veteran of World War I, was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and a member of Fratersville Baptist Church. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Emma Bunch West, five sons, Vern of Cincinnati, Ohio, Vaughn of Cleveland, Ohio, Vester, Viredith and Virgil, all of Lake City, five daughters, Mrs. Virgie Pillman and Mrs. Vada Poore, both of Cleveland, Mrs. Vena Mowery of Beech Grove, Virlie and Vivian, both of Lake City. Services were to be held Thursday (today) at 2p.m. at the Pine Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. O.S. Dugger and the Rev. Ed McKamey officiating. Rites Held For Mrs. Whaley Of Clinton
Services for Mrs. Flora Whaley,70, wife of George Whaley, were held at 2p.m. Saturday in the chapel Martin Funeral Home in Clinton. The Rev. Ed Mays and the Rev. Jimmy Riner officiated. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery. Mrs. Whaley died Jan.5 in Detroit, where she and her husband had resided a month. It was her wish to spend her last days with a daughter in Michigan. Mr. Whaley is a retired employee of L& N Railroad. They formerly lived in Cantrell Apartment, North Main St. Clinton. She also leaves four daughters, Mrs. Sephie Edmonds of Clinton, Mrs. Norma Miller of Powell, Mrs. Chloie Spence of Dearborn, Mich.and Mrs. Cleo Holt, three sons, Eather Phillips and Buster Phillips both of Clinton, and Jimmy Whaley of Powell,27 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Dora Bunch of Oliver Springs, Miss. Chronicle, Tues 12 Dec 1882, Vol XIII, No 150, p4, Died Careyville, Dec 8--Hannah White died on the 5th instant at 5 o'clock p m , at her home on Beech Fork, three miles southwest of Careyville, aged about 73 years. She was a member of the Baptist church and had been for about thirty-five years. She was respected and honored by all who knew her, and in her death the people of Campbell county lose one of their best and most influential citizens. Thomas Don White
Thomas Don White,85,of 110 Sixth St., Lake City, died Friday at St. Mary's Medical Center. He was the son of the late Pleasant and Mary Etta Foust White. White had worked for
Kentucky Central Insurance until retiring in 1969 and also had worked for Union Carbide in Oak Ridge. A Baptist, he also was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge 22 in Briceville,
where he had once lived. Survivors include his wife, Alice Day White, a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. and Waltraud (Trudi) White of Knoxville, daughter and son-in-law, Margie Mae and Kelly Dill of Syracuse, N. Y., Joann and Dale Cornwall of Knoxville, Mary Helen and Jerry Hunt of Cookeville, Doris Jean and Billy Joe Lamb of Lake City. Patricia Ruth Lovely of Lake City, a brother, Jack Allen White  of Norris, a sister, Beulah Mae Harmon of Lake City,16 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren. Services were held on Sunday afternoon at Martin Funeral Home Chapel

Miner Drowns After Attending Funeral Of Kin
A few hours after attending the funeral of his brother-in-law who drowned in Watts Bar Lake Thursday, a 23-year-old Briceville miner drowned in a mining lake near his home.
 
Condy Everett Burris is the man who apparently suffered an attack and fell into the water. Witnesses reported he appeared to topple into the lake while standing on the bank. They said he made no outcry nor did he struggle. He sank immediately, they added.
 
Last Thursday, Edward Wilson, 38, Lejunior, KY miner, whose wife was a sister of Burris, lost his life when he became entangled in a fishing line near Kingston.
 
Wilson was visiting his parents Rev and Mrs John Wilson of Briceville, while on vacation.
 
Roane County Sheriff Marvin Stonecipher said Wilson swarm 20 feet out to untangle a line which had caught on under-brush. Watching from the shore was his wife and their 13-year-old daughter and a
brother, Henry, with the brother's wife and three children. The brother
could not swim but ran for help.
 
Roane County officers, with grappling hooks, recovered the body. They found the fish line tangled around Wilson arms and legs.
 
Burris is survived by his father and step-mother Mr and Mrs John Burris of Briceville, two brothers, Alvin of Lake City and Ben of Briceville, three sisters, Mrs Ora Lee Roysden of Rockford, Mrs Nora Wilson and Mrs Elsie Phillips of Briceville.
 
Wilson leaves his wife and daughter, parents, Rev and Mrs. John Wilson of Briceville, four brothers, Henry, Woodward, and Urshey, all of Briceville and Robert of Lejunior, two sisters Mrs Flim and Mrs Dewey Waggoner of Briceville.
 
Funeral services for Wilson were held Saturday at the home of his parents with the Rev John Tackett officiating. Burial was in Seiber Flats Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home of Lake City in charge.
 
Funeral services for Burris were held Tuesday at Laurel Branch Baptist Church with the Rev Lewis Ward officiating. Burial was in the Burris family cemetery, with Martin Funeral Home of Lake City in charge. Jess Wilson, 80,father of Rev. Luther Wilson died at his home on Clinton RFD 2, December 29 after a illness of 18 years. A member of the Baptist Church, funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Blowing Springs Church with burial in church cemetery. The Rev. Ernest Crawford officiated and Holley undertaking company was in charge of arrangement. Seven sons, J. B., E. L., Mike , George ,Robert, Earl and Willie and five daughters, Mrs. Matelda Abling, Mrs. Bessue Bell, Mrs. Manda Gladfeler, Misses.Verla and Dela Wilson survive as does  one brother, Jim of  Caryville. Lee Wright, Watchman At Mine, Dies
A former night watchman for Monarch Coal Co. in Briceville Rt.1, died last Thursday at Methodist Medical Center after an illness. Wright, was a native of Anderson County, had worked in the timber industry in the Briceville area prior to joining the mining company. A member of the New Pilot Baptist Church, Wright enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Imogene Phillips Wright, three sons, Terry Wright of Lake City, Roger and Michael Wright both of Briceville, four daughters, Rosemary Phillips of Caryville, Betty Hamby of Dalton, Ga., Frankie Byrge of Lake City and Vinnie Birchfield of Briceville, nine grandchildren and a sister, Mandy Edith Hatmaker of Dalton. Funeral services were held Monday at the New Pilot Baptist Church with the Revs. Oscar Patterson and Johnnie Randolph officiating. Burial was in Byrge Cemetery.
