Walden View Resident Dies In Sleep
Mrs. Della Jones Patterson, 70, of Walden's View community, Briceville Rt.1, died Friday at home in her sleep. She was the wife of Tommy Patterson, a miner who died five years ago. A native of the Briceville area, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Susie Jones. She was a member of Laurel Branch Baptist Church and enjoyed raising flowers and quilt making. Survivors include three sons, Calvin J. Patterson of Lake City, James C. and Tommy Lee Patterson of Briceville Rt.1, three daughters, Mrs. Claude ( Bertha) Taylor, Mrs. Marvin (Lois) Vowell and Mrs. Edwin( Beatrice) Phillips of Lake City, two sisters, Mrs. Lannie Phillips of Oliver Springs and Mrs. Dessie Patrick of Petros, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday at Laurel Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Moss Beets, the Rev. R. C. Seiber and the Rev. Guy Lively officiating. Burial was in Laurel Grove. Devonian Dies Monday Night In Oak Ridge
Mrs. Martha Jane Patterson, 72, the wife of the late Byrd Patterson, died Monday night at Oak Ridge Hospital. She lived on Highway 116 in Devonia. Mrs. Patterson was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church at Devonia. Services will be at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Edwin Phillips and the Rev. Pitney Seiber officiating. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery. The body is at Cox Funeral home in Lake City. Mrs. Patterson leaves two daughters, Miss. Dorothy Patterson of Devonia and Mrs. Margie Johnson of Chicago, three sons, Gene Patterson of Flint, Mich.,and James and Bill Patterson of Devonia, a step-son, Archie, also of Devonia, four sisters, Mrs. Ollie Daugherty, Mrs. Nora Viles, Mrs. Nancy Lloyd, all of Clinton and Mrs. Bessie Lowe, Smokey Juction, a brother, Arlie Cook of Clinton Rt.1. Death Of Vivian Patterson
Vivian Leigh Patterson, 17 died February 24, at the home of her uncle Lewis Coker, at Charley's Branch. She professed faith in Christ at the age of 14 years and joined the Free Communion church and lived a true, christain life until her death. She was loved by all that knew her. She married to Ramsey Patterson Sept. 14, 1930. She is survived by her husband, mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Daugherty, one brother, Clifton Leigh, one half brother, Ralph Daugherty, four half-sisters, Mauriece, Lena, Nora and Sophia Daugherty, and a host of relatives and friends. She was a member of the D. of A. The members of the lodge held a service at the church. Rev. Mike Byrge conducted the funeral services at Free Communion church. A retired coal miner and native of the Stainville community, Bart Phillips,63, of the New River Section, Briceville Rt.1,died at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Methodist Medical Center. Phillips, a member of the Rock Hill Baptist Church, served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Opal Mae Graham Phillips, two daughters, Mrs. Mary C. Liske of Davenport, Iowa, and Elizabeth Phillips of Briceville, four sons, Bobby G., Benny and Leonard Phillips all of Briceville, and Stanley Phillips of Oak Ridge, six grandchildren, his mother, Mrs. Columbus (Ellen) Phillips of Briceville, and four sisters, Mrs. Emma Kennedy, Mrs. Susie Armes, Maggie Phillips, all of Briceville, and Joan Phillips of Clinton. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Rock Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Verdon Phillips and Donald Daughtery officiating. Burial was in Phillips Cemetery. Bessie Phillips, 79, of Marlow, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Phillips is survived by two sisters, Gracie Bunch of Briceville and Bonnie Breeden of Oliver Springs, and three grandsons. The funeral was to be held at 2 this afternoon, Nov. 23, at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Randolph and the Rev. Jimmy Ray Seiber officiating. Byrd J.Phillips,50,of Oliver Springs, died Friday night Sept.1,at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was retired General Motors autoworker and a member of United Auto Workers of America Local No.735,Mr.Phillips was also a U.S. Army Veteran. A Baptist, he was preceded in death by his father, Ellis T. Phillips. Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Bobbie Seiber Phillips, of Oliver Springs, three sons and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Carrie Phillips, of Ypsilanti, Mich. Randall Phillips, of Boulder, Colo. and Nicholas Phillips of Ypsilanti, Mich., his mother, Bessie Phillips, of Clinton, and three grandchildren, Janiea Amanda Phillips, Jennifer Phillips, and Vanessa Phillips. A Devonia community native who served his community in a number of ways, Charlie (C. J.) Phillips, 82, died Sunday at his home after lingering illness. Phillips was on County Court two years and Anderson County Board of Education 11 years between the early 1950's and late 1960's.A miner orginally, Phillips drove a county school bus for 20 years before he retired. He was a deacon and Sunday school superintendent at Free Communion Baptist Church of Devonia. A member of the Black Diamond Masonic Lodge No.625 and Scottish Rite, Phillips enjoyed farming and serving his community, church and family. He was the son of the late Charles and Amanda Phillips. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hazel White Phillips, two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Billie Jo) Goodman of Devonia, and Mrs. Jay (Bobbie Lee) Cody of Lake City, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Free Communion Baptist Church with the Revs. Ray Scarbough and Edwin Phillips officiating. Burial was in Phillips Cemetery. at Knoxville's University Hospital of apparent heart attack. He was an upholster and was employed by Central Auto Trim Co. of Knoxville. His wife, Patricia, died three years ago. He was a native of Lake City area and the son of the late Mitchell Phillips. Survivors include two sons, Danny and Lewis Phillips and his mother, Mrs. Pearl Brown Phillips, all of Lake City Rt.1, two brothers, James W. She is survived by her husband, George "Ray" Phillips  of Clinton, daughter, Carolyn and husband Richard Bradley of Clinton, sons, Fred Foust of Kirkland, Wash., and Carl and wife Doris Foust of Powell, grandchildren, John Carl Foust of West Memphis, Ark., Fred Stephen Foust of Anacortes, Wash., Michael Ray Foust of Anacortes, Wash., Jack Lee Foust of Anacortes, Wash., Carla Foust of Knoxville and Philip Bradley of Clinton, and several nieces and nephews. George Phillips,78,a retired logger, died of a heart attack Tuesday in the front yard of his home on Lake City Highway at Clinton Rt.2. A grandson found the body. Phillips was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. His late wife was Nancy Jane Phillips. Services will be at 2p.m.Thursday at Rock Hill Baptist Church at New River and burial will be in the Tom Phillips Cemetery at Stainville. The body is at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ruthie Nolan, Lake City Highway. Briceville- A March 31 tractor accident resulted in the death of Jimmie Phillips, 76, in the New River section of Anderson County. Phillips  body was discovered near the tractor at about 12:30 p.m. Mr. Phillips was survived by his wife, Hester Patterson Phillips of Briceville, sons, Bert, Wilmer, Buddy, James and Curtis, all of Knoxville, daughters, Mrs. Jo Jackson, Mrs. J. Nellie C. Phillips, age 61, a resident of Briceville, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2006, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was born Oct. 28, 1944, in Briceville and had been a lifelong resident of Anderson County. She was a member of Friendly Welcome Baptist Church. She loved attending church and revivals. She enjoyed gardening, outdoor activities, music and traveling. She had worked in the Anderson County school system as a cook at Clinton High School, Norwood Elementary and Norwood Middle School.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Valerie Sue Brown; father, Wayne Bunch; sisters, Alice Faye Smith and Anna Belle Braden; and brothers, William Edward Bunch and Roy Hobert Bunch. The family wishes to thank all the doctors, respiratory therapist and nursing staff on 5 West at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge and to all the nieces and nephews for their special care. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 2006, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home with the Rev. Murl Phillips and the Rev. Lee Phillips officiating. Mrs. Pearl Brown Phillips,68, of U. S. Highway 25 W., Lake City Rt.1,died at 11:30 p. m. Saturday at her home of a heart attack. She was the wife of Mitchell Phillips, a retired coal miner who died in 1972. Mrs. Phillips was a native of the Lake City area and daughter of the late Dave and Sarah Jane Ault Brown. She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, James Willard Phillips and Franklin D. Phillips of Cleveland, Ohio, four daughters, Mrs. John (Emma) Tackett and Mrs. Connie Sue Harness of Lake City, Mrs. Roy (Lula Jane) Gordan of Mt. Savage, Md., and Mrs. Ruley (Faye Marie) Harness of Briceville, three brothers, George V. Brown of New Jersey, Willard Brown of Michigan and Arvill Brown of Ohio, four sisters, Mrs. Willis Brown of Oliver Springs, Mrs. Lois Dison of Briceville,  Mrs. Claude Corn of North Carolina and Mrs. Maggie Black of Kentucky, 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Laurel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Duncan and the Rev. Jack Taylor officiating. Burial was in Brown Cemetery at Briceville. Retired coal miner Perry Phillips 61,died suddenly Friday of an apparent heart attack. He was a member of New Pilot Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at Fraterville Baptist Church by the Rev. Ed McKamey and the Rev. Bill Lamb with burial in Braden's Flat Cemetery. Killed In Mines
Robert Phillips, aged 18 years, was instantly killed at Briceville last Friday while at work in the mines. He was taking the cars into the mine and at the switch passing the cars going out. It is thought at this place the cars struck a timber knocking it down, letting rock weighing near a ton fall on the young man, crushing out his life. McKinley Braden, while coming out of the mine at Briceville accidentally touched the trolley wire. He was knocked down and a gash two inches long cut on the forehead. Thomas Sanders was injured Friday at Briceville coal mine by falling slate. He was struck on the head and right shoulder, cutting two gashes. (donated by Susie Bullock [email protected] )

The Rev. Sherman W. Phillips, 83, of Oregon, Ohio, died Thursday at his home. He was a minister for many years and was a coal miner. Rev. Phillips was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Ruth Hatmaker Phillips. Survivors include six sons, Claude Phillips of Michigan, Charlie Phillips of Sylvania, Ohio, Don Phillips of Clinton, Larry Phillips of Lake City, Doug Phillips of Toledo, Ohio, and Ronald Phillips of Knoxville, four daughters, Patsy Henegar of Oregon, Ohio, Mary Case of Mount Sterling, Ohio, Barbara Rusk of Lincoln, Neb. and Donna Phillips of Toledo, Ohio, one sister, Cardellia Hatmaker of Oregon, Ohio., ? grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral service was Tuesday in Fraterville Baptist Church with the Rev. Junior Thomas, the Rev. Franklin Henegar and the Rev. Harold Houck officiating. An Anderson County Native, Mrs.Suzanna Phillips,77,died at 6:15p.m.last Thursday at her home on State Highway 116 on Briceville Rt.1.She suffered a stroke five weeks ago. A Phillips before her marriage about 60 years ago, Mrs. Phillips was the wife of Byrd Phillips, a retired coal miner. Her pastimes were quilting and sewing. Mrs. Phillips was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church where services were held at 2p.m.Sunday.The Rev. Carvin Phillips and Albert Seiber officiated. Burial was in Tommy Phillips Cemetery. Besides her husband, Mrs. Phillips leaves four daughters, Mrs. Bessie Phillips of Clinton Rt.5.Mrs.Creasie Bunch of Clinton Rt.2.,Mrs.Gracie Bunch and Mrs. Bonnie Breeden, both of Oliver Springs Rt.2.a son, Hobert Phillips of Briceville Rt.1.,26 grandchildren,18 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Silor Hassen of Toledo, O. and Mrs. Lassie Phillips of Oliver Springs.
